OT - Art for art's sake
« on: July 28, 2006, 12:37:58 PM »
Just thought I'd mention that our own Heather (Grayson artist extraordinaire) will be having some of her artwork displayed at a Pittsburgh area gallery from August - December!

Congratulations Heather!

Heather, how wonderful!!!  Congratulations - [cheer]  [cheer]

I keep meaning to post on one of your items that I'm from Pittsburgh, but I never seem to have done it!  Anyway - what gallery - maybe I can get a chance to go see it!

Oh my Gosh...Thanks Connie   [blshy]   :-*

It was an accomplishment of sorts. I had been submitting pieces for the past few years, was flat out rejected. So, this was unexpected.

Btw, one of the Grayson pieces made it - yes!  I feel like making chocolate fudge cupcakes and passing them around...

Wow - I had no idea another "cousin" was in the area.  :D I'm still waiting for some of the details, but I know that the opening reception is August 10 at 5 P.M., downtown, at AIP (Art Institute of Pittsburgh.) [if you need detailed directions feel free to PM me]
The front half of the first floor of the building is a gallery - they have various shows year-round (not just student work). Generally speaking, the gallery is free and open to the public during business hours.

It'll be downtown from August 1 - Sept. 30. After that they're moving that particular show to another area right outside of town...where it'll be on display from October 7 to Jan. 6 2007 (not December as I mentioned to others privately - oopsies.)

That's really wonderful, Heather - I don't know if I'll be able to make the opening, but I'll certainly try to get there.  If I know ahead of time when I'll be going, I'll contact you and see if maybe we could meet.  :)

I finally made it to the exhibition with Heather's work.  There are glass doors as you approach, so you can see some of the work before you even enter.  And, Heather's "Grayson" is right there on the back wall and opposite the doors, so, other than a few of the works surrounding it, it's the first thing you see.

I think she posted that (or something very like it) here once.  I'm sure she'll let us know, and if it's here, perhaps post the link so everyone else can see what it is.  It's a very striking picture of Grayson.  As I mentioned to her, I'm sure that even those who don't know or have any interest in Grayson would be quite taken with it.

I'm not much for most modern art.  Every few years our museum has an International exhibtion and I sometimes go to something like that mainly to come back and describe some "weird" thing and say, "they call THAT art?!!!"  Nothing here was that drastic, but for the most part, the ones that received prizes or Juror's Awards were items that I didn't think too much of!

There were several others that I liked, but even without the obvious bias of it being "our" Heather and Grayson, it would have been amongst my favorites there.

Many thanks...glad someone got to see it!

I found the original posts that featured this piece, but I discovered that the pictures/links were missing (my fault  :-X -- because when I originally posted them they were on my personal web space, which I soon thereafter converted into a portfolio site, which I still have to tweak a bit, but that's a whole 'nother can of worms...)

Anyway - here's the pics, again. The first two are scans (my apologies - the color is a bit off, but then you might not be able to tell unless you've actually seen this in person...only a few on this board have.)

Close up of initial sketch:

Finished product (11" x 17". Mixed media collage...oil, pastels, etc. Again, the color is a bit off.)

This is just a quick photo of it hanging in the gallery (I wish I could have had that illustration framed before it was hung up...sigh):

Funny tidbit related to this...I've drawn Grayson I don't know how many times, and every time I do I inevitibly have to go into the whole rigamarole about who in the heck GH is, but now I can tell people: "You know, there's an absolutely fascinating book about her, you really should read it. It's a must. Check out graysonhall.net and..." (wink to J99)

[thumbleft]  Congratulations Heather!  What a wonderful accomplishment. [thumbright]
