Current Talk '03 II / Angelique in NoDS
« on: December 12, 2003, 10:46:50 PM »
Greetings,

thanks to a friendly tip from Darren and the MB (see NoDS thread), I've been reading the NoDS script published in the DS Movies book back in 1999.

When I first saw NoDS (on the CBS television broadcast around 1973, I think--the movie only played my town for one week, and it was when we were away on a trip), my "read" on the story was that Angelique really was a Witch. Her death certainly could be regarded as an injustice (not to mention being technically illegal--not to put too fine a point on it, in the events depicted in the complete script, she was lynched by a mob consisting of a stump preacher and some deluded local stable boys, under the direction of certain of the local gentry who had a score to settle with the lady).  I was surprised when I began to read online fandom back in the mid 90s to find that many fans' take on it was that Angelique, although a scheming adultress, was technically innocent of Witchcraft.

My current reading of Sam Hall's screenplay reinforces my original impression, that we're meant to understand that Angelique isn't just "witchy," but actually a Witch.  Many of the scenes that clarify her "uncanny" abilities of course fell victim to the cutting room floor.

I hope to go into more detail later on, but am just curious what other fans of NoDS think about the matter.

Current Talk '03 II / Miranda's Playdoh Voodoo Doll Barbie!
« on: December 05, 2003, 09:35:51 PM »
I just love how as Miranda clutches at her Voodoo doll doing her darnedest to give Judah one royal hex up the wazoo, the playdoh with which the fetish has been coated starts to fall off, revealing what's clearly a 1960s Barbie Doll underneath.

Although often reported as a "blooper," I see the crumbling away of Miranda's doll as a wonderful symbol for the decay of her powers as Judah comes thundering in.  As for the Barbie Doll, obviously, Julia brought it with her when she went traipsing up the lil ol Stairway through Time.  I just know Jules never went anywhere with out her pet Barbie. Yeah, that's the ticket.  And then, of course, Julia thoughtfully loaned the fetish out to her best friend, Angelique.  "Trust me, darling, I know you'll be needing this," smiles the attractive redhead, as she secretly wished for the 999th time that her last packet of Marlboros hadn't run out 3 months ago.

(btw, in one of the Innovations Comics Dark Shadows books, they printed a letter from a fan who quoted from her 1971 journal entry describing her disbelief at the shoddy production values in this very episode--wonderful stuff)

trying not to smirk too obviously,

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 II / Anita Bolster Sighting
« on: November 17, 2003, 07:28:36 PM »
This past weekend, I rented from an unusually well-stocked local store the vol. 6 DVD collection of the popular Patrick McGoohan series, Secret Agent (British title Danger Man), whose US theme song was such a huge hit on the charts back in 1965.

I was surprised in the third episode on the disc, "Have a glass of wine" (original US air date: August 28, 1965) to spot a strangely familiar looking hatchet-faced old lady yelling at McGoohan in one brief scene when he came bursting into her farmhouse.

A careful examination of the credits revealed that she was none other than our own Bathia Mapes, Anita Bolster, here credited as Anita Sharp Bolster.

I had no idea that Bolster worked in the UK.  Was she English by birth?

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 II / Hot Naked Chris Jennings Photos?
« on: November 10, 2003, 08:16:48 PM »
Anybody got anything?  I'm dying here.

I'll settle for a screen capture from Don Briscoe's shower soap commercial.

It's been TOO LONG since we have enjoyed the glorious sight of Briscoe in the daily montages!!

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 II / Barnabas Collins Halloween costume
« on: November 05, 2003, 09:36:19 PM »
A friend sent me this link, and I noticed that on the far left of row 2 on this page, there is a small photo of the Barnabas Collins Halloween costume:

http://www.retrocrush.com/archive2003/costumes/tv.html

I seem to recall reading about this costume years ago, and how impossible it is to find.  I would think that the cheap, rapidly deteriorating materials these costumes were made of would put a fairly low ceiling on their market value, but apparently that is not the case.

There are some weird and tacky attempts at costumes here, including several from other TV shows that I know are popular among DS fans, such as Samantha from Bewitched, Morticia from The Addams Family, the Groovy Ghoulies (shown on another page,) etc.  Everyone will have their "most bizarre" item--I think my choice is for the truly frightening Laura Ingalls Wilder costume.  The weird "Greg Brady" outfit is a close runner-up, I have to say.

Testing. 1, 2, 3... / Very cool look for the Boards
« on: October 30, 2003, 09:33:17 PM »
Well, I went to lunch and then the office Halloween party and when I got back here, *everything* had changed (why, it's just like sweeps month on the WB!).

I love the black and white look, which seems like a salute to the delicious 1966 episodes I have been savoring... and the red bat-eyes looking out above are VERY creepy, and seem reminiscent of Angelique's winged familiar from 1795...

just batty over all this,

Current Talk '03 II / Barbara Steele
« on: September 29, 2003, 06:16:11 PM »
For at least a month now, I've been meaning to share the news that Barbara Steele (who played Dr. Julia Hoffman in the 1990 remake of Dark Shadows) is credited as a producer (I may be wrong, but I think she's what is described in the Industry as a "line producer") for the new camp hit, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, on Bravo.

I really hope that Barbara was not involved in the detestable "Boy meets boy."  I watched a few episodes of that, and I wouldn't like to think of her being part of something that so shamelessly manipulated an individual's emotional life.

On the other hand, who in their right mind signs onto a reality show in the hope of finding a boyfriend?

puzzling, but happy to know that Barbara is gainfully employed,

Current Talk '03 II / That Pxilated Flora Collins
« on: September 19, 2003, 04:02:29 PM »
One of my favorite things about the current storyline is the original characterization of Flora Collins.  As happened with PT Liz, Flora originally was very different from the other roles that Joan played on DS.  Flora exemplifies such girlish froth, such charming gaiety.  I always feel genuine regret when the writers forgot and just started churning out Joan's default "matriarchal matron" dialogue again for Flora.

Flora's psychedelic massage from Gerard is pretty darn kicky, too, isn't it?

Current Talk '03 II / Festival Program Cover
« on: September 08, 2003, 06:31:14 PM »
A friend just described the DS Festival program cover; he said it featured a photo from the session with Grayson, Jonathan and Alex Stevens in wolf makeup that he had never seen before.

Can anyone confirm to me whether this was a new shot, or just the one we've all seen before?

And, if it is a new shot, can anyone post it here for those of us who did not attend?

Current Talk '03 II / Miss Fellows, I Presume
« on: August 19, 2003, 02:30:12 PM »
I just love 1995, and one of the many reasons is that Grayson is in nearly EVERY episode!  Heaven on Earth for those of us diehard Hall-o-holics in the audience.

The Divine One, twenty-four-seven.

I was quite struck by the lower right hand corner snapshot of Grayson.  The tilt of her head and the slightly maniacal smile twisting across her lips reminds me so much of her performance as Judith Fellows in Night of the Iguana.  Am I completely off my mark (wouldn't be surprising given what I've been through this past week) or do other Graysoniacs in the audience also note the resemblance?

Current Talk '03 II / Another olive, Barnabas?
« on: August 12, 2003, 05:01:20 PM »
Today's montage (8/12) has me in stitches! Barnabas looks as if he just unintentionally swallowed his martini olive in that upper right hand corner snapshot!  way to go MB!

So... are we all ready to party like it's 1995?

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 II / 1959 credit for Grayson Hall
« on: August 08, 2003, 05:10:02 PM »
Dear fans,

Grayson was in my thoughts yesterday, so I decided to check her IMDB listings.  I was delighted to discover a newly entered credit for a TV show appearance she did in the US Steel Hour anthology series, in 1959.  On a date that's remarkably easy for me to remember; it's the day that my one and only sister was born.

United States Steel Hour (ran from 1953 through 1963)

"Wish on the Moon" Episode: #6.23 - 29 July 1959
Peter Brandon .... Hal Peterson
Peggy Conklin .... Miss Boyce
Joe De Santis .... Mr. Albright
Peggy Ann Garner .... Frances Barclay
William Gaxton .... Barney Goodwyn
Grayson Hall .... Secretary (as Shirley Grayson)
Gerald Hiken .... David Thorn
Emily Kimbrough .... Radio Commentator
Biff McGuire .... Gil Wayne
Erin O'Brien (I) .... Olivia Beech

While looking through the other listings for this series, I spotted an appearance by Thayer David in a 1957 episode.  Unlike poor Grayson, his character did have a name.  I wouldn't be surprised if other DS cast members appeared in this series, particularly such folks as Louis Edmonds and Clarice Blackburn.

If anybody has any ideas how I could get hold of a tape of this, I'd be thrilled to hear about it.

Current Talk '03 II / The Shocking Truth about TV Guide
« on: August 07, 2003, 08:21:49 PM »
Just now I happened to have a look at TV Guide's blurb (on their schedule pages) for DS, and I was *appalled* to see that they listed the cast of the 1991 remake for the cast of the series currently being broadcast on Sci Fi.

Such infamy!  and it's all so sordid...

Somebody is clearly too busy airbrushing beefcake graphics from The O. C. to bother with the few bits of quality left on the air.

Calendar Events / Announcements '03 II / In Memoriam: Grayson Hall
« on: August 06, 2003, 09:14:34 PM »
August 7 is a sad anniversary for Grayson Hall's fans; it marks, this year, the 18th anniversary of her passing in 1985.

I've been told that when Grayson finally signed a contract for her work on One Life to Live in 1982-83, she informed a friend:  "Darling, I've had a clause added:  There will be no more goddamned tweed and no more high heels!"  I love to think of her feisty, indomitable spirit, and instead of mourning, I'd rather share a smile and a laugh at the utter insanity of the world with this most earthy of spirits.

Current Talk '03 II / Maggie Collins, as seen by Grandma Moses
« on: July 10, 2003, 09:15:29 PM »
Well, the arrival of Mrs. Maggie Collins' studio portrait from Paris (in a box that looks like it came from a Coney Island stall) certainly tells one a lot about the taste (?) of her husband.  I've seen far better efforts by a 6th grader armed with a decent assortment of crayola crayons.

We need a poll for worst portrait on Dark Shadows.  It might be a toss-up between this one and the original Charles Delaware Tate portrait of Quentin, which made one of the most attractive men on Earth look as if he were dying of dyspepsia and sunburn.

For best portrait, I'd probably vote for Sam's sketch of Betty Hanscombe.  The portrait of aged Quentin is a fun example of a very particular genre.

any other thoughts?
