Calendar Events / Announcements '14 I / Joan and Grayson
« on: June 16, 2014, 12:54:17 AM »
A fan just posted this charming video tribute featuring stills and screen shots of Joan Bennett and Grayson Hall interspersed with text screens about the lives and careers of each:

I thought the "Arabian nights" musical track was a nice touch.

To fans of the 1991 DS,

I had never heard of this early 1970s film featuring Jean Simmons (Elizabeth Collins Stoddard) as a middle aged woman aggressively courted by a delectably enthusiastic Leonard Whiting:

I'm wondering if the film was ever distributed in the US...

Fans, A friend loaned me the DVD of this film and I just finished watching it.  I was very surprised to see John Lasell (who played Dr. Guthrie, nemesis of Laura Collins) show up in a minor role as a copy.  I did a short review of the film for a friend's site:

DEATHMASTER (1972). How do you sum up an early Seventies B-movie horror hash that includes vampires, hippies, biker boys, Satanism, communes, surfer boys, nubile chicks out for a good time and a worldly-wise cougar who knows how to swing, incense, peppermints, "organic" food... oh and LEECHES? Sublime in its awfulness, this one really has it all. It's really, truly, insanely bad, but just try to look away. Bobby "Boris" Pickett sings a hippie ballad about finding yourself, TV regular John Fiedler appears as a sort of gay hippie granny named Pop (Fiedler actually goes through the film wearing a macrame vest--hey, it was the Seventies!) and Dark Shadows alumnus John Lasell plays a cop. As if that weren't enough, infamous soap diva Brenda Dickson debuts as a confused hippie chick who becomes prime vampire bait. Directed by cult actor Ray Danton. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-rcsNNmlXY

The movie was a fun watch.

Folks, I just learned from a post on another forum that our own beloved Penny Dreadful's handsome, wolfy partner, the delightful Magoo "Garou" Gelehrter, is battling cancer.  An updated health bulletin was recently posted by Magoo here; I'm sure prayers and good wishes would be very welcome.

Wishing Penny and Magoo safe smooth healing and better times!

Sincerely,

Calendar Events / Announcements '14 I / OT: The Ghost and Mrs. Muir
« on: April 13, 2014, 12:56:53 AM »
Fans,

It's often discussed how the popularity of DS was in part related to the widespread interest in the occult and the supernatural during the period of the late 1960s and early 1970s.  I just watched the premiere episode of THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR (which I actually don't recall having seen before--I'm not sure, but this might have been an unaired pilot):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVRh4AZBl0A

There were elements here that made me think of DS, notably the Captain's portrait, the frequent storms, the seaside cottage, and even the fact that the little boy is the first person (apart from his own descendant) to have contact with the ghost.

For those who never got to see this, I thought it might be worth having a look.

I haven't had the chance to actually take a look at this book yet.  It purports to be a fully researched history of Seaview Terrace, the Newport Mansion that served as Collinwood on the original series, but sounds like a gossipy cornucopia of Newport lore and legend woven together with some autobiographic musings from author Michael Seggie:

Fans, I kept thinking that something looked familiar about Actor Murray Bartlett.  I was reading this interview and then it suddenly hit me... he looks a lot like the older Joel Crothers was Joel was sporting a moustache.  WARNING, interview has sexually explicit language and some profanity.  The host site includes some male nudity as well though there is none on this particular page:

Anyone who checks Murray out--do you see a resemblance to Joel?

I'm not watching Looking but maybe I should... I think I could get it via iTunes.

Calendar Events / Announcements '14 I / OT: Only Lovers Left Alive
« on: February 20, 2014, 03:59:53 AM »
Fans,

Over the President's Day weekend, I had the opportunity to catch a preview of the "new" Jim Jarmusch film ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE, about a pair of star-crossed vampire lovers, Adam and Eve, played by Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycOKvWrwYFo

I've been hearing about this project ever since Jarmusch started talking about it back in 2011.  The film was actually completed in 2012.  Filming happened mainly in Detroit and Tangier.  The film only really shares in common with DS the theme of "supernatural" beings whose story involves some very human emotional complications.  I am totally in awe of the art direction, the writing, the use of music and imagery... the pace is very slow (I prefer to think of it as leisurely) and the focus is on character dynamics, mood, atmosphere, and carefully built emotional tension.  Mia Wasikowska plays the sister of the Tilda character, John Hurt plays an aged Christopher Marlowe (yes, the Elizabethan playwright) living as a vampire in Tangier, and Anton Yelchin is a cute, clueless lad who is the Hiddles character's Willie.

I think DS fans might find this one very interesting.  The US release is supposed to be sometime in April but it is unclear whether it will be a full, nationwide release or only selected cities as an initial test.

Calendar Events / Announcements '14 I / Donna McKechnie interview video
« on: January 21, 2014, 11:41:14 PM »
Fans,

Donna McKechnie is interviewed by Celebrity cruise lines Cruise Director Alexander Yepremian in 2013 when Donna was doing a one woman show on the Celebrity Summit:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zItK3aGbv4

I met Alexander briefly last week when I was on another Celebrity vessel with my family.

Donna mainly talks about A Chorus Line in the interview, and DS is not mentioned, but I thought for Donna's fans this might be a fun clip to watch.

Current Talk '13 II / DS episode streaming on Netflix
« on: December 28, 2013, 01:14:57 AM »
According to this article, as of Jan. 1 Netflix will (possibly/probably) no longer have 400 episodes of DS available for streaming:

http://www.collinsporthistoricalsociety.com/2013/12/netflix-to-lose-dark-shadows-in-new-year.html

I seem to be one of the few who still rents actual DVDs from the service, and my perusal of the catalogue shows the entire series *of discs* still coming up available, though I'm sure that in some instance, there may be a wait because only certain warehouses probably hold certain discs.

Above article states that there are also a few hundred DS shows available on hulu, which probably means the "hulu plus" service.

Rights to streaming vs. rental rights seem to operate according to different rules and provisions.  I don't know anything about it.

Sara Monster posted this older video of hers and I thought it was hysterical--and very appropriate to the season:

Hard to believe this was 31 years ago... December 1982:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCEzY9ZE02o

The irony, probably lost on most, was that Joan's 1983 "Hollywood movie" was a telefilm with Parker Stevenson in which she played a bag lady. I'm still shocked every time I think about Joan's appearance in that production.  So far as I am aware it was her last time acting before the cameras.

Current Talk '13 II / A NoDS forerunner?
« on: December 06, 2013, 04:22:22 AM »
I've been catching up with some episodes of the old chestnut ONE STEP BEYOND, a supernatural-themed series that aired in the late 50s and early 60s.  I just watched an episode entitled "The Captain's Guests" and there were a number of elements in the story that made me think of the NoDS screenplay:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGsvma-Nk80

I've always thought that Sam Hall was most likely inspired by the Oliver Onions story, "The Beckoning Fair One," which had been dramatized in the late 1960s Hammer studios series JOURNEY INTO DARKNESS, but this episode makes me wonder...

Calendar Events / Announcements '13 II / Blog of Dark Shadows
« on: December 06, 2013, 12:49:38 AM »
I just learned of this site's existence thanks to an article by Jeff Thompson a friend shared with me.  There are lots of goodies; one that struck me is a fan's edit of an opening credits sequence for the storyline focused around Julia's introduction, but done with the music and visuals of the 1991 series opening, transposed into black and white:

http://www.blogofdarkshadows.com/2013/12/02/dark-shadows-julia-hoffmans-arrival-title-sequence/

There's also a clip from an interview Helena Bonham Carter did about her work as Julia that was new to me--and sections dedicated to the NBC DRACULA series, SLEEPY HOLLOW, and a catch-all called SPAWN OF DARK SHADOWS.

Worth checking out.
