Robservations #1087

And if you'd care to look back, the first WP discussion topic for this ep:
This is, of course, one of, if not THE most important ep ever on the original DS! Well, at least for one particular member of the forum.  [wink2]  And we all know why:

And no doubt those moments are why the Sci-Fi Channel ran the ep twice back in '03:

How bizarre!-- SciFi repeated an episode

I had to stifle a laugh when Julia told David that they always told each other the truth. Since when?

As if she wasn't doing enough research in Collinwood, Julia has also gone poking around in Sebastian's background. Apparently, nothing negative turned up. But it is still unclear why Sebastian has settled in Maine. Was this his choice? Roxanne's? Or is there more to it?
To his credit, Sebastian does seem humbled and somewhat moved when David asks for help. But not moved enough to actually do anything.
Daphne and Gerard seem to have a relationship close to what is hinted at in Turn of the Screw. It's far more sinister than the relationship we saw between Quentin and Beth but seems more derived from the Quint/Miss Jessel relationship in TOTS.
David Selby is always watchable but this version of Quentin is uncharacteristically weak. The story line having him become bewitched by and become subservient to Daphne would have worked a lot better with Roger.

at the time television in general, and soap opera in particular, were an inherently "square" genre...

nearly all stabs at depicting the "counterculture" fell embarrassingly flat. Shaw's "hippy astrologer" was wincingly bad.  [ghost_rolleyes]

David screams, Julia cross examines and he is elusive. Lately she seems to have no empathy or patience for children. Julia meets her latest rival Roxanne. Elizabeth finally comes to her senses and wants to leave, but then she walks into Daphne's room and there is Gerard.
you know there's a whole wing that's closed off all the time; the west wing, I go there lots of times

You're absolutely right about the way that Julia is being written here, alwaysdavid. She comes across as somewhat of a shrew here, not the devoted family friend at all.
She and Barnabas seem very annoyed that the family doesn't seem to be taking their prediction for impending disaster all that seriously. But they haven't really offered much in the way of proof, other than that they are Barnabas and Julia and their word is enough. Perhaps if they had been a bit more honest about some of the stuff from the last year or so, they might be able to persuade the others.
