Calendar Events / Announcements '24 I / Donna Wandrey Onstage
« on: September 25, 2022, 05:33:49 PM »
Kinda short notice on this but I only just stumbled onto the information. Donna Wandrey is currently appearing in an Off Off Broadway production of a play called Fastened To The Moon. It's running until October 1st, just a week away.
It's being done at the The Chain Theater in NYC. Tickets are $28.
I found two separate addresses for the theater and, since I am sure which is the correct one, I recommend contacting the theater directly to make sure. Their phone number is 917-261-2446. Website is: chaintheater.org

Calendar Events / Announcements '24 I / Kate Jackson: Superhero?
« on: September 05, 2022, 09:08:50 PM »
I was reading the imdb trivia section on the Wonder Woman tv series and came across some interesting information. Lynda Carter stated that a lot of actresses auditioned for the part and that three of the early candidates were the original Charlie's Angels trio, Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith and Kate Jackson.
Farrah was a good athlete and might have done well with the show, though an earlier attempt at the character with blonde Cathy Lee Crosby was not well received. The camera clearly loved Jaclyn but I don't know if she could have carried the show. Which brings me to Kate. I would have loved to have seen her as the dowdy Yeoman Diana Prince in the 1940's segments, though I do suspect that she would have been somewhat reluctant to wear the skimpy Wonder Woman costume. And, if she regularly blew a gasket over the quality of the Charlie's Angels scripts, she might have turned into Mount Vesuvius over the adventures of Wonder Woman.
Lynda also said that she auditioned for Charlie's Angels but didn't get cast. Years later, when it was time to cast a replacement for Kate, one of the actresses who auditioned for the Tiffany Welles part was young Michele Pfeiffer.

Sometimes things work out for the best.

Calendar Events / Announcements '24 I / Joel Crothers and WOR
« on: August 25, 2022, 01:03:00 AM »
I remember seeing an item in the news section of Daytime TV, one of the earliest soap magazines, that Joel Crothers had landed a job as a regular entertainment critic at WOR,  Channel 9 from NYC. I watched the station occasionally but never saw Joel. I always kind of wondered what had happened. Since Joel obviously isn't around to ask, Google came up with the answer. The station did indeed hire him and promoted his joining the station in newspapers and press releases. Then they abruptly fired him, a few hours before he was to make his first appearance.
The reason? Someone at WOR felt that having a working actor review entertainment projects would be a conflict of interest and would reflect poorly on the integrity of the news department. Well, up until that point, the station didn't have a news department. A lot of the on the air staff had been let go from other stations for various reasons. Nor was WOR well regarded in NYC. It was the least of the NYC independent stations. Their programming was largely made up of off network reruns and Filipino vampire movies.
Joel was smart enough to have kept his soap job. I don't think that he ever ventured towards broadcast journalism again.

The iconic Barbara Steele will be making an appearance at the Mad Monster convention at the Hilton Embassy in Concord, North Carolina later this month, August 26-28. North Carolina is a bit out of the way for me, as I expect that will be the case for most forum members. But perhaps it means that she will be appearing at other shows as well.

No, they didn't have a fling either. Though I'm sure that Harvey would have loved to. Joel is mentioned quite a bit in Harvey's new memoir I Was Better Last Night. Joel worked with Harvey, Estelle Getty and Matthew Broderick in the original Torch Song Trilogy. He describes Joel as "distinguished and poised, strikingly handsome and funny, doing soaps had trained him to bounce from emotion to emotion without straining for content."
Joel did not stay with the production long term. The schedule of shooting Edge of Night during the day and doing the play at night was beginning to affect his health. He also said that during a recent trip to Africa, he had picked up a stomach bug that he hadn't been able to shake.
Whether it was a stomach bug or something else is best left open to interpretation. It seems like an interesting book but unless you are a huge fan of Harvey Fierstein, it might be best to see if your library has a copy.

No, they didn't have a fling. At least, I don't think that they did. But their paths did cross. Joel had been playing the lead in the Broadway production of Barefoot In The Park and it was kind expected that he would do the national tour. The producers apparently felt that Tab had more marquee value and cast him in the lead. Tab was a bit too old for the part but seemed to do well in the part. He was very gracious when discussing Joel in his autobiography, referring to him as a wonderful young actor.  Things happen for a reason. I'm not 100% sure about the timing but it's certainly possible that if Joel had done the tour, he might not have been available for Dark Shadows.

Jackie Earle Haley, who played Willie Loomis in the 2012 movie, is hitting the convention circuit. He'll be at the Rhode Island Comic Con in Providence from November 4th through November 6th. The event will be held at the Dunkin Donuts Center/Rhode Island Convention Center. Tickets are not yet on sale but the convention website is ricomiccon.com

That's the good news. The not so good news is that his posted price for an autograph is $60. The price for a professional 8x10 will be $85. No price was listed for pictures at the table. I'd like to meet him and get an autograph but the price is a little too steep for me.

Calendar Events / Announcements '24 I / Retrofan #21, July 2022

I was visiting my local Barnes and Noble and saw that they had the new issue. It features a pretty good interview with Julie Newmar, as well as the history of Pebbles cereal, the Slinky, the animated Tarzan series and more. There's also a one page article called Celebrity Crush. The article is about Quentin Collins. Not David Selby. Quentin. The author never describes the appeal of the character and the piece reads more like fan fiction. The author,  Katherine Kerestman has won some literary awards but her prose here is pretty pedestrian. Should you wish to check out her website: creepycatlair.com

In short, the issue itself is a worthwhile purchase. But I'd your sole interest is in the Celebrity Crush column, read it in the store and save some

Kathryn announced on her Facebook page that she and Patrick Oster will be doing a joint appearance at The Black Cow in Croton on Hudson on Sunday May 29th from 1pm to 4pm. Oster will be signing his new release The Sleeper List and KLS promises to have a "few" of her own books as well.
The Black Cow is not described as a bookstore. It's more of a coffee house/meeting place. Oster is local to the area, so he's probably a patron of the place.

Another DS publication is in the works. This one is called Daytime Gothic and it will be a print publication for later in the year. It's being put together by DS forum member Stuart Manning, whose Dark Shadows Journal was a quality publication. Contributions may be sent to collinwood80@gmail.com. It hasn't been posted on the Lyndhurst site yet but Kathryn Leigh Scott announced via Facebook that she would be appearing at Lyndhurst this October. Not too much information has been posted, other than the date, Sunday October 30th, from 12 noon to 5pm. But I imagine that the details will be similar to her appearance last year.

Calendar Events / Announcements '24 I / Kathryn Leigh Scott and Ethel
« on: March 22, 2022, 10:53:50 PM »
No, not Ethel Mertz. Or Ethel Merman. The Ethel is an offshoot of AARP, a newsletter that is to "champion older women owning their age." The site can be accessed at aarpethel.com. These are freelance articles, published on a semi regular basis.
KLS has three columns available for reading. Two of them cover extremely familiar territory. Her experience as a Playboy bunny. And her experiences on DS. The third is why Women and Men love The Hallmark Channel. I'm not entirely sure that we all do but it's a lighthearted piece.

Back to Barnes and Noble again and I picked the new issue of Scary Monsters, with the legendary Ingrid Pitt on the cover. The magazine contains a lovely interview with Nina Wayne. Nina is the sister of the late Carol Wayne and has had a long career as an actress. Nina was cast as Charisma Beauty in The Night Strangler, the second Kolchak MOTW. She ended up with a larger part than she expected, due to the antics of Jo Ann Pflug. Pflug held up production by staying too long in the make-up room. DC, Mr. Time Is Money, got tired of waiting for her and gave some her lines to Nina. This did not go over well with Pflug. She went out of her way to cast shadows on Nina's face. And, during one scene where the ladies were side by side, she stepped on Nina's foot with her spiked heel and drove it in. Nina was a professional and did not ruin a take.
She was asked about any conflict between DC and Darren McGavin and said that she wasn't on set long enough to notice and that she had her own concerns with Pflug.
