My personal interpretation of "Turn of the Screw" is that the ghosts are quite real. Otherwise, for me, it just ends up being -- "Oy, another wacko who thinks there are ghosts... ka-CHING!" Thank God in DS it was made quite clear that Quentin and Daphne were not mere figments. I mean, to prove it, all you'd have to do is look at the phone bill.

Heh heh, thanks! Tomorrow's the day, but I'm getting with my younger brother tonight to knock back some sushi and stuff. ;) His birthday's Tuesday, so we're doing a joint ignoring of the fact that we're getting to be old geezers.

Current Talk '04 I / Sort of OT: The Innocents

I broke my own rule of not watching AMC last night to check out The Innocents, which for some reason I have managed to never see in all these years. It's based on Henry James' "The Turn of the Screw," and it's a wonderful movie; very eerie, and featuring excellent performances by Deborah Kerr and particularly Martin Stephens as the little boy. This movie really drove home how much the introductions of Quentin and Daphne in Dark Shadows were based on the James story. And the opening of the movie looks as if it might have inspired the beginning of Night of Dark Shadows as well, with the long approach to the house and beautiful views of the estate grounds.

If you haven't seen The Innocents, check it out. I think it just became one of my favorite spooky movies. There are several scenes that honest to God gave me a little case of the creeps. I shudder to think what today's generation of moviemakers would've done to the slow pacing, subtle chills, and haunting atmosphere of the house.

Until the last year or so, I'd never watched Buffy, and I've only seen the few I have because my daughter (who came back home for a while after being on her own for a year or so -- gad, but that's a whole 'nuther story!), was a big Buffy fan; I couldn't help but look over her shoulder at a few. Not bad stuff, but I can't say I've felt any compulsion to sit down and watch the show now that she's gone again, much less check out episodes of Angel. Nor do I ever so much as take a gander at any of the rows about Dark Shadows vs. Angel, and so am blissfully ignorant of the particulars. Kind of a shame that some fans get their shorts in such a wad they might deny themselves an honest to God treat, assuming we've got one in store for us.

I'm sure glad I'm not a rabid fan of anything.

Calendar Events / Announcements '04 I / OT: The Lebo Coven

For you readers of scary books, my new novel, The Lebo Coven[/color] has been listed for pre-order at http://store.yahoo.com/shocklines/lecobystmara.html. It's a hardcover and copies ordered through Shocklines will be autographed. The cover art is up on the Web site, although it does not yet feature the title and author logos. The book is due to be released in July.

DS fans will find a few oblique nods to our favorite show in
The Lebo Coven (none of which I'll give away here); it has a sort of a southern gothic flavor rather than the ol' New England gothic, but if you enjoyed Dreams of the Dark, I think you'll find plenty to run screaming from... er... enjoy in this one. ;)

P.S. My anthology, Deathrealms, also due in July, can be ordered through Shocklines at http://store.yahoo.com/shocklines/desetafrlawh.html

The BBC Dracula with Louis Jourdan is probably my favorite dramatization of the novel. Jourdan seems an unlikely actor for the role, but he really did a fine job of it. The whole production has an atmosphere of eerieness that is superior to just about any other, helped immensely by the musical score. I have a tape from television that goes back to the very early 80s when it was re-broadcast on PBS. I believe the original was a 2-part "miniseries," but the version I have doesn't run a full four hours. Not sure how much it might be missing.

As far as a sign of impending apocalypse....I think a blonde Vicki pretty much covers that prophetic event!   (I'm sure Mark Rainey agrees!)

Well, a blonde Vicki is not in itself necessarily apocalyptic; Betsy Durkin signaled the end times all those many years ago and she was brunette. No, I'd say that a blonde Vicki only portends catastrophes on the scale of a small western nation sinking into the ocean, nothing worse than that.

Hey, did anybody notice that guy hobbling by in the Old Man Barnabas makeup?

Oh, never mind, that's just MB.

I've no problem with Greystone per se; it's certainly got the right look -- although I really hope they don't go the route of just using a different section to represent the Old House. That was a terrible, transparent maneuver in the 91 series that really destroyed credibility in the setting. And I hope they'll work on the angles, lighting, etc., so the place doesn't scream CALIFORNIA! so blatantly.

The heretic in me hopes that they do keep her blond - and not only blond, but with the short hair. Talk about forever shattering the "dream" image of the governess with long dark hair!

Wonderful site, gbsmiles. Love getting the comparative glances. I really hope they're going to do Collinwood itself justice this time around.

I loved American Gothic, but I think it's for the best it only played for two seasons. They told the story, tied up the loose ends, and went out on a high note.

I've made it no secret that Thomas Rathburn in Dreams of the Dark was inspired to no small degree by Gary Cole as Sheriff Buck. When I was writing the character, I always heard Gary Cole speaking his every line of dialogue. The physical description was right on, too. ;)
