How dark it was in the Old House living room!  There were more candles lit than I remember ever having seen in any any other episode in that room, but it was still dark.  Some reality still prevails at this stage of the series.

Josette's portrait is gone from its usual spot, without comment at this point.  Joe didn't notice.  He and Carolyn used to play in the Old House, but apparently Carolyn never felt Josette communicating to her, so to Joe, the portrait of Josette would be just one more old Collins portrait, maybe.

We had the very first instance today of Barnabas gazing out of the Old House window.  Gosh, did it ever feel good!

A fateful encounter at the diner, very well played. But shouldn't Maggie have emptied and washed the urn for closing?  [ghost_wink]

At the Old House, Willie has already been working hard--the broken windows are fixed, the drawing room at least has been cleaned, the furniture restored and the chandelier repaired. The portrait of Josette has been moved,
presumably up to “her” room
--leaving a blank space above the mantel, just waiting to be filled.

After Joe and Maggie (who make an adorable couple!) leave, Willie, already fearful for Maggie, dares to ask Barnabas, What do you intend to do with that girl? That is not your concern, Barnabas replies coldly. The very coldness of his reply tells us his intentions. But it seems that as far as Willie is concerned, more than just the drawing room of the Old House is being repaired.

Our first shot of Barnabas gazing out into the night is indeed wonderful--but of course, no proper vampire would need a candle to light his way.

I keep forgetting to post that when it comes to the way candles were used in this ep, I love the way the candelabra was framed in the shot of Maggie and Joe entering the Old House:

Nice frame grab, MB. It really gives the impression of being from the POV of the Old House itself and makes Maggie and Joe look like interlopers in a highly secretive domain--which of course they are.

At this point it feels like Barnabas and the old house are one and the same and he sees and hears all that goes on within it's walls.  Willie seems to have replaced the broken window panes with dirty ones but then perhaps he borrowed some from another unrestored room in the house. Maggie feels as if someone is looking right through her.
you know there's a whole wing that's closed off all the time; the west wing, I go there lots of times

Maggie must have work to do. She is drinking coffee late in the day. But then people are always drinking coffee on soaps. :)

Here are some lines, not exact but close. BC, "Night time can be lonely." and then later, "One gets used to loneliness, it is part of an existence." Is that how Maggie gets the feeling about Barnabas.

It sounds like Barnabas doesn't like cows blood, wants the real thing. Though one attempt had been spoiled.

Maybe it looks so dark because it is black and white, and also the fire isn't going.

If Barnabas hadn't zapped her yet, why are they connected. It must be some sort of spell, that might be why he is using the candle.

And yet we humans are usually content with cow's milk.

We haven't seen yet that Barnabas is a messy drinker.  But then we haven't seen him after the cows blood. :)
