I get kind of scared when they say it's "inspired" by the novel, because goodness knows so many things claiming to be faithful fall quite wide of the mark. But I'm very interested in seeing this just for the casting of Count Dracula! Yum!

I don't want to get my hopes up for anything faithful to the book. I would say the closest adaptation is the BBC version with Louis Jourdan, even though I didn't find him quite the right choice for the role. That version followed the story line of the book very closely as well as depicting Dracula's evilness. British adaptations of classic works in the past 15 years (or more) that I've seen just don't want to stick with the original; they want to "improve" and reinterpret for today's audiences, who apparently can't relate to anything not from their own generation.

There seems to be a rule that every 10 to 20 years, the BBC has to film DRACULA again. This version seems to owe a lot to F. Coppola, Ken Russell, and Guillermo del Toro.

I doubt if anything will ever top the classic Louis Jordan version.  Even my mom, who hated that "spooky stuff," was riveted to the TV screen when it was aired on PBS.

New BBC Dracula trailer:

This is really not my idea of fun, but I know some of you will love it. The actor cast as the Count is best known in the UK for a performance in a comedy series.

It definitely looks like it is taking quite a few liberties with the original text. On the other hand, I find it to be quite intriguing.

What is it with all the nuns?  What do they do?  Pull out all the rulers and rap him on the knuckles?  Make him stay up after sunrise and clean the blackboards and erasers?

The Netflix trailer, which may have been included in the article a couple of posts ago, has some different scenes from the BBC ones:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeL6GNNWoZk

Reports I saw on another forum today from UK viewers describe this new version as a campy hoot with some deliberate humor. Claes Bang is known as a comic actor so this may be a 21st century version of CARRY ON COUNT DRACULA. The Count also has some nude scenes, according to initial reports. Kinky!

Far from being definitive (almost everyone agrees that the 1977 BBC version starring Louis Jourdan was the closest to definitive ever filmed, if by "definitive" you mean "as close as possible to the novel") this version seems like a way-out pastiche with lots of stuff brought in from other trendy horror vehicles of recent years, in addition to the warped humor. Expect everything including the kitchen sink to be thrown at the main concept. People do say it is all quite entertaining.

Worth Watching: ..., a New 'Dracula' on Netflix, ... (https://www.tvinsider.com/845691/whats-on-tv-saturday-january-4-sunday-january-5/)

Dracula (Saturday, streaming on Netflix): Bram Stoker's vampire icon is making another comeback, courtesy of Sherlock creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, whose pedigree for pumping new blood into popular genres is well established. Danish actor Claes Bang (The Affair) assumes the role of the Transylvanian count in this three-part British adaptation, which promises to trace his spooky origins in Eastern Europe as he battles the descendants of vampire hunter Van Helsing.

A British viewer commented that the new version worked best for him as a kind of homage and send-up (there are a lot of jokes, apparently) of the Hammer Dracula films. The final part is described as an homage to the last two films, DRACULA A.D. 1972 and SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA. That actually sounds kind of interesting to me. A lot of what I have read about the series feels quite off-putting so don't know when or if I will ever watch it. I hope it is fun for you. I think if you watch in a spirit of fun and expecting outrageousness, it will work best.

cheers, G.

Actually, I just fit in watching the first 30 minutes and I love what I've seen. So far there are really two stories taking place: in the present Harker, having taken refuge in a convent, is explaining to Sister Agatha what happened to him at Dracula's castle, and in the past we see Harker's experiences unfold. The part at the castle, so far anyway, is extremely faithful. Is there humor? Yes, but only if you've seen a previous version of Dracula because the humor derives from remarks Dracula makes to Harker, remarks those of us who have already seen Dracula recognize as having double meanings, and I'll leave it at that. But there is more humor in the present. To say Sister Agatha is quite the unconventional nun for her time would be an understatement, but she is quite the hoot and I love every second that she's on screen.

Of course, I've only seen 30 minutes out of a total 4 hours and 30 minutes, but if the remainder of the show is in the same vein (no pun intended), I'm going to really enjoy this version...

I finished the first part and, yes, before it ends it departs quite a bit from the novel. But that's not a bad thing as far as I'm concerned. It may not be to everyone's taste (on IMDb people seem to either love it or hate it), but I loved every minute of what I've seen so far. Dracula gets all the best lines, which to me come off much more as clever than camp. And Claes Bang as Drac thoroughly dominates every scene he's in. And Dolly Wells as Sister Agatha is perfect casting against him because the Dracula/Sister Agatha Claes Bang/Dolly Wells dynamics are superb. I can hardly wait to see what happens next but the earliest that will be will be tomorrow night...

I was interested in watching this series but I saw a lot of things online that were not exactly what I would call good reviews. I suppose it could just be that some are missing the tone that the series is striking for the viewer. MB's recaps above seem to shine a bit more light on how the show actually is, which is intriguing. However, given that I have a current back log of entertainment to catch up on (tv, movies, and books) I might not get to it for some time.

I watched it. Well, I tried. Most of the time it was on while I did other things. I did watch the first part. The second part I did some fast forwarding and part three was FF'ing and sleeping. I fell asleep twice while trying to watch the conclusion. I am going to go back to it to see how it ends. Oh, wait. I just remembered. Good, now I don't have to. Needless to say, I really didn't enjoy it enough to actually watch it. I found some aspects interesting but after part one I knew I couldn't watch in earnest. I  may read up on it to figure out what was really going on between him and Harker and Vanhelsing. I guess Dracula isn't supposed to be likeable but I didn't like the character at all (what I saw of him). Maybe I  will rewatch the 2nd and 3rd parts to see if he becomes at all likeable.

Finally watched parts 2 & 3 in earnest. I didn't walk away, fast forward or sleep this time. I didn't have to, it held my interest. The best I can say is that it was an interesting take. I'm not a Dracula connoisseur so most of it seemed like a fresh take to me, which is what made it hold my interest (the 2nd time around). You'll never find it on a favorites list of mine. My favorite thing about it was that Dracula came across as a human with a disease as opposed to a monster. And funny as it seems, it's what made the character so especially repulsive (unlikable) to me. I guess a vampire without a conscience is not my cup of tea anymore.  Damn you, Barnabas Collins!

3 out of 5 stars.

Looking forward to your final review, MB.
