Patti, if you search the Robservations board for "Civil War" (quotes included), the results will include this instance as well as another.  (The other has David comparing Burke's feud with Liz to, respectively, Grant vs. Lee.)  The mention of the War that I referred to in my post is the same as the one discussed in replies #14 & 15... Cousins, PLEASE read entire topics before responding!

The quote by David was, "That's Thaddeus Collins. He was alive during the Civil War."  Nothing was said about his death or when the portrait was painted.

I hope your friend will share a review of the performance, Pansity.  I'm sure Selby's narration will be fabulous.  "Fellow citizens, we cannot escape history."  Goosebumps!

At the very start of the setup to 1897, reference is made to a Collins who lived during the Civil War.

Ben Stokes was also a war veteran.

Current Talk '09 II / Re: Discuss - Ep #0842

The voiceover confirmed that Julia was unable (as opposed to unwilling-- I did wonder) to give Petofi all the information he needed.  So I guess we're to assume that she doesn't remember anything about the I-Ching configuration that she availed herself of and saw again during her vision.  Yet, that she didn't reveal that Barnabas knows which hexagram it was, and held back about his body remaining in the basement for a time, do seem to be important gaps in her information-sharing.

The ep contains some series highlights and lowlights, all captured wonderfully by MB's screen grabs.  On the plus side were the brillant faceoff between Angelique and Petofi (tee hee, did you see her reaction while they were face to face and he said "power" a bit too strongly?) and her reunion with Julia.  On the very low side was the dreadful scene with Amanda and Tate.

I'm pretty sure that the door to the mill's back room used to open from the left side, but with all the different doors we've seen lately-- doors with medallions and other embellishments and "metal" doors and the paneled I-Ching doors, it's probably not surprising that they put the mill set back together with its doorknobs on the opposite side.

B:  "Julia, can you hear me?"
J:  "Barnabas."
B:  "Can you talk?"
<snicker>

Angelique (responding to Julia's explanation that there's a good chance the injections she's giving to Barnabas will succeed):  "I'm convinced he really IS a fool. If he can be cured, he'll have what he's wanted for almost 200 years. He'll be able to go back to the future and live a normal, happy life."
Um, is she talking about the same future where Lang's experiment has already cured him?

Amanda suddenly comes to realization that she is unnatural and sheds some tears.  I wish she's quit reciting her lines like she is playing to the last row in the theatre.

Her voice drives me up a wall!!  She's supposed to be Tate's ideal woman in appearance but what a pity that his strokes on canvas could not do something with her voice.  And what's up with facing the camera to spot Tate's creation and scream when the creation was clearly standing to her right?  (He was played by Alexander Cort, btw.)

When the bullet went right through Julia without harming her, it made me think of the Star Trek episode "Spectre of the Gun". Spock performed his mind meld on all the others so when they were "shot" at the OK Corral, the bullets went right through them, and they were unharmed.

Interesting.  Since that ST aired during the previous year, I wonder if it provided the inspiration?  [hall2_wink]

Instead of restaging the finale of the previous ep, the same clip was simply repeated at the start of this ep.

The effect of the spinning I-Ching wands was dizzying, especially by the 3rd time.

I'm sure I saw Barnabas dematerialize in the woods outside of Collinwood.  Did they forget that this power was taken away?  Then he hid behind a tree as he waited for Beth to come along; give me a break!!  Just because the subject matter is the supernatural does not mean we don't deserve some consistency:  Either Barnabas has a power or he does not.  If he regained the ability to disappear, he should have done so in the basement cell and certainly would not need to be ducking behind foliage.

Ha ha, when Petofi passes through the door while in a trance, you can see remnants from where the I-Ching wands were attached.

Was that fantastic tribunal set a redressed Collinwood foyer?

He again remarks that Aristede is no intellectual giant, but perhaps he keeps him around to make himself seem intelligent.

I love the expressions on Aristede's face while Petofi talks about their relationship.

The "heroes" make all sorts of mistakes trying to read Petofi and fight him at every turn.

The man seems incapable of discerning whether someone is telling him the truth or not.  Even when faced with total sincerity, such as Barnabas' assurance that he cannot take him to the future, Petofi assumes he is hearing a lie.  So if being truthful is only going to make him lash out like a petulant child, I figure you may as well make something up.  And stroking his massive ego probably wouldn't hurt.  Instead of telling him, "I told you everything I know," Julia should have found some some excuse to stall him or make herself seem indispensable as a time traveler / co-conspirator / doctor / whatever.  But by affirming that she was no longer of use to him, she basically signed her own death warrant.  And btw, what prevented her from spitting out the gag or tumbling onto the floor along with the chair?  Sigh.

When Petofi accused Julia of knowing what awaited him beyond the door because the I-Ching trip occurred under her "supervision," it brought to mind his Cupboard-o-Vision in which he sees to it that another party has a vision that, unfortunately for him, he cannot see for himself.  Jerk.

But I don't think it was Trask's clothes, either, because I remember the skeleton was wearing a red vest, most unTrasklike.

Sorry, my fault.  I meant that if we could see how the room looked in 1969 after the past had been changed, the gramophone would not be there and the skeleton would be wearing clothing that was different from what we saw originally.  I'll shut up now.  [hall2_lipsrsealed]

They will form one of 64 hexagrams, she says.  Which is this one? he asks.  She checks the book--the third, the kune (?) hexagram.

It's the Chun Hexagram.

Quentin to Amanda:  "I'm not going to hide the fact that we're together."
Idiot.

The final scene, with Petofi in the I-Ching trance, was very well done, which is fortunate since it will be reused to open the next ep.

Jim Hale, who had a small role during 1795, provided the scimitar action.
