I read about this a couple of months ago.  I saw one of those public domain VHS versions in the early 90s and am doubtful whether anything could improve this film... Barbara is lovely in her scenes of course (as is Ian Ogilvy), and from an historical point of view it's interesting as an early salvo from the director of WITCHFINDER GENERAL.

2009 really seems set to be The Year of Barbara Steele.  I wonder what other surprises we have in store?

Thanx Restev!

Liz did wear a coiled-snake brooch--really the height, the summit of Park Avenue elegance--when she was under the thrall of the Leviathans (aka LeviaLiz, as I like to call her).  It was stated in a couple of scripts that people wore naga (snake) themed jewellry as a means of recognizing one another in the cult.

Why, Midnite, you're right!  Which means that not only is my brain gone, but my eyes are no longer functioning either.

Oh well...

cheers, G.

Golly, today's screen capture and caption really hits the target.  "If I could only think!" indeed.  Given that Chris seems to be on the point of leaving the room, perhaps the good doctor's sentence should be finished:  "If I could only think, I might remember where I put the prophylactics, Chris!  Chris! Oh, Chris!"

Love the brooch Julia is wearing on this day.  I loved the bangs from the 69/70 period of Leviathan.

« on: January 14, 2009, 05:03:01 PM »
There's a 1968 episode from late in the "Vampilique" storyline that has weird music and other sounds (I think muted, garbled dialogue) in one or two scenes.  I remember asking about this years ago and I was told that the distortion had happened on the master tape and with the tech then available could not be removed.  It may still not be able to be removed.

An explanation that occurs to me is that the master tape that was used on the taping dates concerned had been reused and for some reason, the previous content had not been completely wiped off the tape when it was used to record the episode.

From various threads here about the failure of many soap operas from the 1960s to survive, it seems as if the networks did re-use videotape a fair amount back in the day.

Claude darling, I was so entranced with the idea of Julia, Cassandra and Stokes having lunch together that I wrote an entire story about the episode, once upon a time.

I love your ideas about the meeting.  I really wish we had gotten to see more of THIS and less of Adam running around in that silly green sweater pawing himself or any female within reach.

I wish there was one of those postcards available from the day when Julia and Cassandra had just returned from having lunch together with Prof. Stokes and enjoying "a fascinating conversation on the occult."  Both ladies were wearing gloves; I think Cassandra was wearing a lemon colored coat dress, while Julia was wearing one of her more tasteful suits.

MSC, I've been loaning the "DS The Beginning" DVDs to a chum of mine who has been swooning over them.  He is adamant that DS was NEVER so good as it was in '66.  Of course, he still hasn't had the chance to see Laura's introduction--he has vivid memories of her original storyline during the original broadcast in 1966/67.

This is wonderful news, Darren!

The latest relay of media buzz around Depp Shadows has been having me feel more optimistic about the restoration project than has been the case in some time.

Tally Ho!

MB!  You know I SWOON over that capture of Magda!

I now really understand why Magda was Grayson's all time favorite role on DS.

Hey MSC, I would say go back and re-watch Laura '66-'67.

Having read quite a few of your posts over the years, I think Laura will provide the needed visual comfort food.  Plus, Vicki has some really great scenes throughout!

Current Talk '09 I / Mordecai Grimes
« on: January 08, 2009, 11:46:23 PM »
My thanks to MB for showcasing Thayer David's vivid Mordecai Grimes characterization in today's snapshot.  Even though Mordecai only appeared in something like four or five shows, he brought an element of piss-and-vinegar realism to the unfolding of the 1840 plot that was sorely needed.

Mordecai always reminds me of one of Thayer's later characters--Rev. Strack in the film NoDS.  Fabulous work.

I particularly remember a scene where Mordecai and Gabriel are spewing vitriol at one another in the drawing room.  If I remember it correctly, Gabriel makes Mordecai wheel him in, treating him like a house servant.  Grand stuff.

That's nice to see that Jerry Lacy did one of these.  I don't go out to the West Coast DS functions so have never had the chance to meet him, but I admire his work enormously.

I had stopped reading this thread back in June and was charmed to see the news about Wendy/Josette K.

Josette was one of the fans who interviewed Grayson Hall in the Spring of '73, an interview which now circulates as a tape recording one of the fans made at the time (I think it was Wendy herself).  The interview starts with Grayson describing how things look in the apartment.  She did that at Wendy's request because being blind, Wendy couldn't see what Grayson had in her home.

There is a photo of Wendy with Grayson and, I think, another fan, from that visit, that I have seen.  I think in one of the photos from another occasion, Wendy somehow or other wound up being mis-identified as Alex Moltke.

Midnite, thanks so much for sharing Jerry's story about that scene.  It is indeed one of the most intense--and artistically successful--moments in the series.

I've really been enjoying the new captures MB has been sharing.  The one of Grayson from the other day having a Julia moment was simply ravishing!

Originally my favorite Clarice performance was as Minerva--such a marvelous mixture of venom, complacency, and self-righteousness (and you know that Minerva's scene with Laura still has the ability to make me scream)--but when I saw the original introduction of Mrs Johnson episodes from 1966, that trumped everything else.  I'm really sorry that the character lost some of her vinegar over the years, although I recently watched a marvelous episode from the Nicholas Blair storyline in 1968 where she was castigating Harry.  Nobody could deliver a tongue-lashing quite like Clarice!
