Title: Jonny Lee Miller's Elementary (SHIRTLESS ALERT: Reply #21)
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on July 02, 2013, 08:02:28 PM
I see where Elementary has been nominated for three Teen Choice awards:

2013 Teen Choice Awards nominees
Choice TV Show: Action - "Elementary" (http://www.zap2it.com/news/pictures/zap-2013-teen-choice-awards-nominees-and-winners-20130522,0,1088498.photogallery?index=12)
Choice TV Actress: Action - Lucy Liu, "Elementary" (http://www.zap2it.com/news/pictures/zap-2013-teen-choice-awards-nominees-and-winners-20130522,0,1088498.photogallery?index=13)
Choice TV Actor: Action - Jonny Lee Miller, "Elementary" (http://www.zap2it.com/news/pictures/zap-2013-teen-choice-awards-nominees-and-winners-20130522,0,1088498.photogallery?index=14)

CBS must be happy with this development because normally their shows skew much older than teenagers. But apparently there must be a sizable teenage audience for the show to have received any nominations at all, much less three in one the major TV categories.

In this week's Ask Matt (http://www.tvguide.com/News/Ask-Matt-Emmys-Hate-Watching-Zivas-Exit-1068127.aspx) column on tvguide.com both a writer and Matt Roush lament that JLM wasn't nominated for an Emmy this year.

The first season DVD is now listed for pre-order on Amazon (though the price at the moment is a ridiculous $43.29) with a release date of August 27th:

Elementary: The First Season (http://www.amazon.com/Elementary-Season-Jonny-Lee-Miller/dp/B00CL151G4/ref=pd_rhf_gw_s_cp_3_8HTA?ie=UTF8&refRID=0J3MKEZF3FJ3CBW18HTA)

There are no extras listed - though that could simply be because it's too early. But what is odd is that there's no listing for a Blu-ray release.

For those who may be interested, Entertainment Tonight did a short segment during last night's closing credits about how JLM will be interviewed as well as appear on the cover of the next issue of CBS Watch! magazine:

Speaking of pix, I haven't forgotten about the screen grabs I promise to do from the finale - I just haven't had the chance to do them.

And in other Elementary news, check out CBS Ponders the Importance of Social Media (http://www.tvguide.com/News/Sharknado-Under-Dome-Social-Media-CBS-1068475.aspx) by scrolling down to the "Discovery of existing shows" section, which is all about how Elementary audience nearly doubled after DVR playback, Video-on-Demand and online viewers were added to its "live" viewers. And if that wasn't interesting enough, apparently "the show continues to draw in new viewers, even in the summer months." Honestly, I haven't been paying attention to the summer ratings lately. But when I was I did notice that Elementary was consistently coming in 1st in its time slot. And if many of those watching "live" reruns are new viewers, that can only be a good thing so far as the upcoming second season goes.

I see where Elementary has been nominated for three Teen Choice awards

Surprisingly enough (not that I don't think she should have won - I do because she's excellent on the show), I see where Lucy Liu won:

Choice TV Actress: Action: Lucy Liu, “Elementary”

Unfortunately, though, the show lost out to NCIS: Los Angeles, and JLM lost out to NCIS:LA's LL Cool J.

Oh, congrats to Lucy!  And it's great that she (and the show, to even be nominated) is a hit among teens, since that seems to be such an important demographic for movies and TV shows these days (us old fuddy-duddies and our tastes are less important  [ghost_wink] )  As for Jonny, there's always next year!  Elementary is probably my favorite broadcast TV show right now, and I hope it has a long and successful run!

I completely forgot about this until I was looking through the DVD/Blu-ray sales in the store flyers earlier today (yes, I know the flyers came out on Sunday and the new DVDs/Blu-rays came out yesterday, but you know how behind I always am  [ghost_smiley]). I was surprised to see that Best Buy has the set for $39.99. That's almost as ridiculous as Amazon's originally listed price!  [ghost_rolleyes]  But I noticed that Amazon now has the set for $27.99, as does Target. And Target has an exclusive of over 25 minutes of bonus content. Though what that normally features is an extra disc featuring a Paley Center panel. Not that those panels aren't interesting - but they're often something that only the really big fans of a show will find interesting.

Two very interesting things, though. One is that the set is not being sold on Target's Web site, only in stores, and this is the first time I've ever noticed something like that. And the other is that it really does seem as if there's no Blu-ray release because I can't find one listed anywhere, which is very odd.

A friend picked up the DVD set in Target last week and tells me that the extra disc is not a Paley Center panel. It actually contains:
And unfortunately for those who would be interested, there are no shirtless JLM shots in the photo montage.  [ghost_nowink]

Also also unfortunately, the set is no longer discounted at Target (now it's a ridiculous $43.29). But that will no doubt change as the holidays gets closer - and perhaps some stores will still have a few sets with the extra disc.

And what doofus decreed that the ravishing shots of JLM displaying that luscious chest of his should be excluded?

Well, you're not that far off because "Big Game Day" is the day of the Super Bowl - hence the featurette is a behind the scenes of the making of the ep (#14, entitled The Deductionist) that aired after the Super Bowl.  [ghost_wink]

I happened to be looking up an actress on imdb (Natalie Dormer in Masterpiece Mystery's "Silk," who looked familiar, and turned out to be Irene Adler from this series) and so got to the page about Elementary, where I came across this trivia tidbit:

"Both Jonny Lee Miller who plays Sherlock and Lucy Liu who plays Watson had never read a Sherlock Holmes book before securing roles in the pilot."

It's interesting to see that even up against a new special about Valerie Harper, whose cancer battle has been in the news for months, a rerun of Elementary came out on top in the Fast Overnights for last night:

10 p.m:
CBS: "Elementary" rerun (5 million, 3.4/6)
NBC: Special - "Valerie's Story" (4.4 million, 3.0/5)
ABC: "Scandal" rerun (4.1 million, 2.7/5)

And remember, the second season premiere for Elementary is next week, September 26th at 10pm ET.

In antici...PAtion of tonight's second season premiere, I've (finally) gotten around to getting those shirtless screen caps from the first season's finale. There are 15 of them - though all 15 aren't displayed in this post because the files are huge and would take quite a while to display. Instead, I'm displaying five select captures, and anyone who wants to see/download the others (and you all know who you are [ghost_wink]) merely has to click the provided links.

It's nice to see that Elementary still wins its time period in the Fast Overnights:

10 p.m:
CBS: "Elementary" season premiere (10.1 million, 6.4/11)
ABC: "Grey's Anatomy" season premiere (9.3 million, 6.3/11)
NBC: "Parenthood" season premiere (5.2 million, 3.4/6)

And it'll be even more interesting to see how things stack up once the Live+7 DVR numbers are released for the premiere because the show tends to gain between 2 to 5 million more viewers.

And for that contingent of JLM's fans, wasn't it nice to see in the previews for next week that he will once again be shirtless. The show knows how to pander to, er, please their audience.  [ghost_grin]

I watched the first episode of Season 2 of Elementary mainly because a close friend insisted that she thought I would adore it.  Fans of classic Dr. Who will want to note that Jon Pertwee's son Sean Pertwee has a very juicy role as an Inspector Lestrade on the skids.

Besides Jonny Lee Miller (whose Sherlock is so different from his Roger Collins, it really underscores JLM's chameleon-like powers as an actor), the only other element that made me think of one version of DS was Lucy Liu's performance as Dr. Watson, a retired surgeon who is now sort of a psychiatrist working with addicts.  The way the role is conceived made me think of the potential way that the Julia character could have been played in the aborted WB DS in 2004... as portrayed by Kelly Hu.

I haven't been posting the Fast Overnight ratings this season because for the first few weeks Scandal's viewership had been a bit higher than Elementary's, but I'd been reading that once the DVR Live+7 numbers were factored in Elementary was outdrawing Scandal by a sizable amount. However, I was having trouble tracking down the actual figures because few Web sites actually post the full ratings numbers - plus it takes a few weeks before they're even factored in. But today I came across an article on a Web site that I visit regularly, and it lays out the ratings story for Elementary nice and neatly:

"Elementary"

Overnights: 1.9 in 18-49, 9.17 million viewers

Live +7: 3.3 in 18-49 (+74%), 13.9 million viewers (+52%)

The skinny: The second-year drama is CBS' second-biggest DVR show in both adults 18-49 and total viewers, behind "The Big Bang Theory."

So, as we can, Elementary is still doing just as well as it was last season. And with the gains the show has in the Live +7 numbers, each week it keeps pulling farther and farther away from Scandal to cement itself as the top show at 10 on Thursday.  [hall2_smiley]

I know I am still enjoying it and JML (AND LL, particularly this season) immensely! It is delivering on it's promises from TPTB last season to delve into the personal lives of the characters. I was worried a bit about that because I don't want to watch a night time 'soap' but they are balancing it all very well and it has improved on an already excellent formula. Bravo.

Thanks for doing the research, MB.

Elementary continues to draw in more viewers than Scandal even in the Fast Overnights:

10 p.m:
CBS: "Elementary" (9.1 million, 5.9/10)
ABC: "Scandal" (8.8 million, 6.0/10)
NBC: "Parenthood" (3.6 million, 2.4/4)

And the margins continue to be quite sizable once the DVR Live+7 numbers are factored in.
