The following is a list of scenes that are still lost and which are not present in the 129 min version recovered in 1999.

STAIRWAY. Sarah cries, trying to save Angelique.(trims)
Nathan and Millicent giggle together on the terrace. They've apparently been meeting in secret, and he's been quite touchy-feely with the airheaded heiress. She shocks herself in his presence, she says breathlessly. He tells her she's falling in love, but she wisely points out that he always talks about her loving him, but never the other way around. (Millicent is sharper than she appears.) He wants her to invite him to tea, but she insists that's flaunting the rules, and he says he hates rules.
Here's the first of what I'm sharing that's associated with Scene 124 -
(Click here for a 556X1208 version)
The Flip caption for it reads: "Monica Rich plays Sarah, the 19th
century daughter of the Collins'
housekeeper. She is Angelique's only
friend in the 19th century, just as
Sarah's reincarnation, Carlotta
Drake (Grayson Hall) is Angelique's
only friend in the 20th century."
(I suppose they don't consider Charles as Angelique's "friend," given he's, uh, much more than her friend.
And it's amazing how many plot points this and other articles gave away long before the film had even opened.
But then, I've bitched about that quite often with regard to both this film and hoDS.
- it's part of Flip Magazine's Curse of Dark Shadows article, and to my knowledge it's the only place it's officially been published. But then that article, like the one from Daytime TV, is another that contains material that's exclusive to it. And interestingly enough, when it comes to Flip's article, I've never come across any of the still versions of any of its photos...
Continuing Scene 124:
Still clutching Angelique, Sarah cries bitterly as
Angelique bends to her.
And that's when today's quote -Page 62/Scene 124 - Angelique: 'My darling, don't cry. Sarah, dear, don't cry, please. It will be just as if I'm away for a little while.'
- comes up, followed in the script by:
SARAH
But they said...they were going to...
She looks at Charles.
Charles...don't let them --
She cannot finish, her sobs break out again.
And as far as differences in the dialogue go, what Angelique actually says is "Darling, don't cry. Sarah, dear, please don't cry. It'll be just as if I've gone away for a little while" - but all of Sarah's dialogue and everything that surrounds it is dropped from the scene once again, and once again, who knows if it was shot or not, though as we'll see below in this post too, given the editing, it may have been shot but simply cut.
And as far as differences in the directions and the descriptions go, we don't actually see Sarah crying bitterly because she seems to be sobbing - and even though neither the script nor any notes from DC indicate it, as can be seen in the following capture -
- a close-up of a disgusted looking Strack is actually seen while Angelique reassures Sarah that it will be just as if Angelique has gone away for a little while, and like Charles' earlier close-up, who knows if Strack's closeup was inserted because DC didn't like what he got from Monica Rich or simply because DC wanted to insert a Strack close-up?
Roxanne enters Collinwood. Barnabas calls her name. Excuse me, Mr. Collins, she says formally. Mr. Collins? he repeats--Roxanne, what is it? Hurt, she asks, is it true?--"Are you married?" Yes, he admits, shame-faced, it is--I am. Her mouth drops open, then closes. I must go to my sister, says Roxanne. Forgive me, begs Barnabas, there's no possible way for me to explain this. She agrees--there's not, is there?

On the other hand, the subtitles include Carlotta's narration, as well as all of Sarah's lines, but strangely enough jumps from -
- right to -
- skipping Mrs. Castle's line - and interestingly enough, Angelique actually says, "Darling, don't cry," without the "Please." - could the subtitles have picked the "Please" up from the end of Mrs. Castle's line? - Who knows?
