There was an interview with Mr. Gordon when he appeared at a festival a few years before his death (I think the transcript was published in an issue of the World of DS zine) when he remembered lying in Barnabas' coffin and having to listen to an argument between Dennis Patrick and John Karlen (as the characters of Willie and Jason) before he made his big move.

I think he played "Hand of Barnabas" in a number of episodes.

Hi Midnite, It is Leviathan period and if it is the one I am thinking of, it was just up on the slide show; it looks like a shot from the episode where the Leviathan box is delivered to Julia and Chris' arrival helps keep her from opening it.

Another possibility is the episode where Sabrina gets her dye job; he smiled really brilliantly in his scene with her.

I am 99 percent sure he never wore that coat in any of the '68-'69 shows--it turned up during Leviathan.

Not that I'm obsessed with Briscoe or anything... *snrk*

Wow, Midnite.  Thanks for that link!

Words seldom fail me, but the Norman Bates figure in the "Midnight/cult Movies" section... I'm truly beyond speech.

Yeah, well, since I cut my hair, the camouflage is well and truly lacquered solid.  A friend actually had the impudence to turn to me the other day and say, "Darling, you've gone quite Republican."

It was only because I had inexplicably misplaced my Destructo button that she is still among the living.

MSCbryk, there was a "Clay Julia" doll available on eBay a few years ago.  A friend of mine bought one and loves it.  It's by somebody who goes by the moniker of "ClayGuy," I think.  It sort of made me think of what would have been the result had Grayson Hall done a role in that old 1965 Rankin/Bass film, Mad Monster Bash (if ANYONE out there remembers that--it's the one with Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller--endearing in a somewhat naff way).

I personally don't collect such things, but I believe the Clay Julia figurine was quite reasonably priced.  I do think "Madam Alexander" is WAY over the top but I know others think the same about the cult of DS, so I guess we're all even, eh?

cheers, Gothique (the living incarnation of "THE GAYEST THING EVER," trust me, darling...)

Current Talk '06 II / Re: Favorite line of dialogue?
« on: January 04, 2007, 04:48:09 PM »
This isn't my favorite line, but I thought of it recently because it's such a delicious verbal put-down of Angelique.  In 1897, Laura tells Ang:  "You may be succeeding as a ... whatever you are ... but it doesn't hide the fact that you're a failure... AS A WOMAN."  This is followed by the two women swearing to destroy one another.

Just delicious stuff.

Hi Jennifer, there are luscious Don Briscoe captures on the slide show today and I'm sure it's all in honor of YOUR special day!

Have a blast dear!

Best, Steve

What a cool idea--and how delicious to have refined discussions about the shows!  I'm willing to give it a shot.

As for SoapNet, the people I know who are into current television (as I think I have mentioned before, I've officially given up on it, although I just started watching a newish show called Life on Mars that a friend was kind enough to send me on videotape) all have TiVo, one of the forces pushing the VCR into the graveyard of the dinosaurs.  Knowing that they pour hundreds of dollars per month into the tube makes me feel almost virtuous when I occasionally buy a beloved series on DVD.

Current Talk '06 II / Re: Does Roger Deserve a Wedgie?
« on: December 30, 2006, 07:49:07 PM »
I'm afraid I have no idea what a wedgie is, but the original 1966 Roger Collins was a wonderfully devious character.  I laugh everytime I watch the scene where
he attempts to terrorize Vicki when David's locked her in the room in the "closed-off" West Wing (that wound up seeing more foot traffic than Boston's South Station on a typical afternoon, it seems).  Edmonds played that scene with such wonderful poise, despite the absurdity of it.
My second favorite Edmonds characterization is PT 1970 Roger.  He's so catty he cracks me up.  I love when he tells Alexis that mentioning Angelique and Maggie in the same line is "like comparing a sable to a mouse"--and Parker's bitchy smirk in response.  Edmonds had the same flair as the late, great Clifton Webb with this sort of vicious yet elegant dialogue.

Well, Grayson said in the '73 fan interview tape that the script had to be changed on the day of taping because Frid refused to say the final dialogue line about the possibility of Melanie having been attacked by a vampire.  He felt that the line "made fun of Barnabas" if he delivered it.

As I believe Buzz indicated, Mr. Frid did very few of the opening voiceovers, and the ones he did were fairly late in the game--I seem to recall first hearing him do one in a 1970 episode.  Thayer David, on the other hand, had a massive side career in voiceovers.  He discusses this in Ron Barry's interview with him (great tape).  As a viewer at the time, it seemed natural to me that Thayer did the closing voiceover, I think because I primarily identified him with Professor Stokes and I could imagine Stokes summing everything up because that just seemed to be a natural role for him to take.

I guess it would have been nice to have had Alexandra return to do the final voiceover, but it would also have reminded everybody how Vicki's original storyline got pretty abruptly canned once they started up with Barnabas.  It would have been really neat to have had Vicki return in a final 1971 storyline to finally learn the answer to the question of her parentage.  Ah well, we can dream!

Mrs. J is  seen in, I think, one of the early Quentin episodes (from early 1969) scrubbing tiles in front of a hearth in one of the bedrooms.  It was shortly after this that Dr. Julia Hoffman informed another resident of the Great House that Mrs J was "a neurotic hysteric" (I think that was the deathless phrase).

Mrs J also
inadvertently caused Eric Lang's death by bursting in on Cassandra who was busy with a voodoo doll and a needle.  Cassandra had left a note for the redoubtable housekeeper asking if she and Roger could have breakfast later than the crack-of-dawn hours set for the rest of the household.  I also remember that Mrs J barked at Cassandra "I only have two arms and two hands!"  I always thought it would be fun if Cassandra smiled beguilingly and murmured, "We could change that, my dear--but not as you might have wished!"
As we've discussed several times in the past, during the original broadcast I barely noticed Mrs J, but watching the show as an adult, Clarice Blackburn's performance in the role is one of the great delights of the series!

Wow, Penny, many thanks for that review.  I had my doubts as to whether this set would be something I would want to acquire (since I already have around seven CDs of Dark Shadows music at this point), and it definitely sounds like something I need to put on my shopping list.

Is this a limited edition that is going to go out of print soon?

Hope you and Garou are all set for a very joyous holiday!  Even if von Bulow keeps leaving those "Bah, Humbug, viile Witch!" messages on your answering machine!

cheers, Gothick
