During a recent appearance on THE TONIGHT SHOW, Tarantino, who was visibly drunk (Leno even brought it up and it's been the subject of much chit chat since) from the open bar in the green room, came on the show with a black wolf's head cane.
Concerned that Tarantino may have an injury, Leno asked him about the cane. Quentin's response? "No, it's my Barnabas Collins cane! Haven't you ever seen DARK SHADOWS!!" To which a few other fans in the audience hooted.
By the way, he was born prior to DS and he was named from a Burt Reynolds TV show character named Quint...

I KNEW IT!-- I've many times pictured how cool Grayson would've been in Pulp Fiction as some old-lady drug dealer. . yea, i'm nuts---so what? with the way my job is these days, i need to self-entertain better than self-medicate, yeah?
-
I wish I watched The Tonight Show. That would have been very interesting. :)

A new DS film written and directed by Tarantino..... [gun]
The mind boggles.

Doesn't it, though. [winkg] I can just picture a scene with Willie and Jason complaining about Mrs. Johnson's cooking and finding it inferior to that at McDonalds. [lol2]

Would it be terribly gauche of me to admit I've actually eaten a Quarter Pounder (with no cheese) in Paris? [lghy]

In fact, here's a picture of him that I found on NBC's site! Oh dear, I hope you can see it.
The caption reads something like "Quentin Tarantino shows off his sporty cane that was once used by the character Barnabas Collins in TV's 'Dark Shadows'."

Are they saying that that's THE cane?
-
It sure does sound like it, doesn't it? Since I didn't see the show, I don't know if he claimed that. But I suspect they just don't know what they're talking about.
But it must be true if you read it on the Internet. ;)

It looks great! Thanks so much for posting this for those of us who'd missed the show. [smlyg]
(And BTW, I browsed around the Tonight Show site and couldn't find this photo, so I'm assuming that it isn't still a part of the site. The reason I mention this is because we wouldn't want to be posting a photo here that's currently being offered on another site. We prefer that people post a link to the original site. [winkg])

Sure sounds that way to me too, but, somehow it looks "off", ya know?

Oops. It is still there although it's kind of hard to find - it's in a pop up.
Sorry for my gaffe. Would you like me to replace the pic with the URL?

Hmmm... It looks just a little different from the cane on the show. It might be a little taller if it isn't the exact one from the show. ???

i've often wondered too. . .

If you read Darren's main topic you'll wonder no more. ;)

huh?? I saw the Tonight Show mention . .. but did he say he was named after the show, i don't recall Darren saying that was brought up?

Wow funny post but i also think quite a few people have gotten drunk in that open bar before the show!

One way to know if it's THE cane is if it doesn't have the little, er, rubber grommet on the bottom of it, where the cane strikes the floor. In "those" days, they didn't have regulations for men's walking canes. However, a friend bought me a wolf's head cane as a gift, and it was obviously not "the" cane because the bottom had a little rubber seal on it. For protection of the cane? The floor? To keep it from skidding? The man who sold it to her said I could take it off and paint the bottom inch of the cane black.
All I could think was, "If there was a rubber grommett on Barn's cane, then maybe it might not have hurt Willie so much!"
But, to get back to the subject, I'll bet Quentin T's cane had a rubber grommet on it. Definately not "the" cane, tho, I think.
Also, JK once indicated that at some awards (perhaps the Emmy's last year?) that Quentin T came up to him and said, "Mr. Karlen, I love your stuff." :o

I hope John quipped something about needing a * J.O.B.* --- :-*

It's not the original cane- just a Barnabas Collins-style cane.
I believe Frid has the cane and his costume as well.
-
Jonathan Frid still has his cane from the show, but none of his costume. When DS ended, he kept the cape, a ring and bought one of his suits (the brown one, I think). His secretary threw out the ring and cape during the 1970s, and the suit was eventually auctioned off at a convention, I believe.
-
That's all correct, Stuart. :)

I remember seeing replicas of that gorgeous cane on sale a few years ago and having to fight with myself not to buy one. With car payments, rent, food, and boring stuff like that - I could never quite justify it so I passed. I just did a quick search on Google and found one currently up for grabs on Ebay incase anyone wants to have a look at it...

From what I can tell, this one looks like a match for the one Quentin Tarantino had on the Tonight Show.
I've always thought that a bracelet based on the handle of the cane would be really beautiful. :)
