what was the gist of the gold key comics?did they consistently portray barnabas as the evil character he was early on on the show or did they try and work in the guilt-ridden,romantic side of his character?

what other characters from the show appeared in the comic?

just another little thought on steady joe haskell...he's the only major character that never really carries his own storyline.he gets caught up in other character's stories(carolyn, maggie, angelique)but it's never really joe's story.

as nathan forbes he was more pivotal to the action.

Current Talk '04 II / the "gift" of dvd
« on: December 26, 2004, 02:12:30 AM »
happy holidays guys...i hope everyone had a nice christmas day.

i "hosted" this year.my gift from mom was a very nice dvd/vcr set-up(which i have thus far been unable to set-up).which brings me to this question.i've never owned a dvd player, just an old vcr.i have every episode of d.s. on video from ep.1 to the late 1968 eps.
should i stop buying tapes and switch over to the dvds?the machine plays vhs so i can still watch my older tapes but going foreward with the show should i just do a full-on switch to dvd?space aside(you can imagine what the tape pile up looks like)is it worth it?should i go back and re-buy all the earlier episodes i have on dvd(except for the pre-barnabas eps.,maddeningly not yet available on dvd)?
if so...what volume of dvd should be my first buy being that the last tapes i bought were o.s.v.66(just after ang and joe haskell first "meet")? [_snowman_] [_snowman_] [_snowman_]

In an interview, Dan Ross stated that it was Matthew Morgan who was the unknown attacker on Vicky.

The first Gold Key DS comic book is hilarious in that everytime Barnabas is shown, he is seen running with one arm raised while holding his cane in his hand!

matthew morgan might have been vicki's attacker in some of the ross novels[spoiler]...but in "the mystery of collinwood" it's professor veno/aka/the phantom mariner.i can't recall exactly why he was tormenting her(probably a very flimsy reason).[/spoiler] in this book widow's hill was called "suicide cliffs".

these early books tried to market victoria as a "nancy drew" type character.girl-solver of mysteries(an ability she sadly lost on the t.v. show).their intended audience seemed to be teenage girls.they have that perfect "i read it in study hall" feel.

i don't specifically remember vicki being dragged-and-dangled...but she did suffer unrelenting torment in the ross novels...almost more than in the actual show.

what was it about this dear girl that inspired never-ending persecution?  [rleyeg]

forbes' transformation from amiable fellow to deviant scoundral was swift and descisive.they played almost as two different characters.
but in this story, with barnabas' transformation, perhaps it was meant to show how one's character can change abruptly under extreme circumstances.

it was nice to get to see joel crothers play against type.joe haskell was so even-keeled(until a certain vampire/witch gets involved).
this question has come up before in relation to alexandra(who left the show just before joel)but if he had stayed with the show...might he have been cast in the 1897 story?and if so as whom?

claude, is the "unknown" assailant you refer to by any chance professor mark veno aka the "phantom mariner"?

i have a few of the ross novels and they are bizzaro.talk about parallel-time.they bear almost zero resemblance to the show itself.
i mean, who knew that liz and roger had another brother? [shkdg] [shkdg] [shkdg]

Current Talk '04 II / cassangelique's "look"
« on: December 19, 2004, 05:55:56 AM »
as cassandra blair collins she wore the requisite boxy coat and dress ensembles...cass exits the scene but when angelique returns the "look" is considerably different.

the black wig is gone.in it's place is a very strange "hostess-from-hell" ensemble.a dove gray gazar blouse with sheer sleeves and voluminous, ruffled, pleated collar and cuffs.a massive self-belted silver jaquard maxi-skirt.what's up with this look?

she should come complete with her own fondue pot. [tngb]

Calendar Events / Announcements '04 II / Re: "Vicki" Cast In New WB Pilot
« on: December 18, 2004, 01:29:58 AM »
as disappointed as i was about the new show's failure to get picked-up i did have one major casting reservation when the pilot was under production...i thought that marley shelton was too old(30) and too blonde to play victoria.

maybe she would have been good...we'll never know [undb].

my goodness! i just realized that the article was written by our fellow member darren gross.nice job darren.i love the "access" you had to the show...there has been so much blind speculation.

Current Talk '04 II / fangoria article
« on: December 16, 2004, 02:58:39 AM »
i'm not sure if this is already old news to everyone but while browsing the magazine rack at "border's" today(kls and her book club not in sight) i saw the january issue of "fangoria" magazine and it had a cover story on the ill-fated 2004 version of d.s..i never buy the mag($7.99!)but of course i bought this issue.
for those who haven't read it it's pretty interesting and has a few good pics..it's such a shame that we'll never see this show! [sadg]

i'll second that the adam story is dreadful...i wasn't going to bring it up since i've bitched about it so much before.i sort of stopped actively watching for awhile because it irritated me so much but i just ordered new tapes and am determined to get through it.cassandra is the only character during this story that consistently put in good work.everyone else either over or under acts.i'll be curious to see how the nominations for this story go.
