Maybe I'm just suffering from memory loss, but for all the opinion polls on this board and on the previous one, I can't recall a single no-strings-attached "who is your favorite Dark Shadows character?" thread, and its been bugging me. So, without anymore delay...
Who's your favorite Dark Shadows character?
Ive gotta admit, as an early episode fan, I've always liked Vicki.
-
Willie--so well played by John Karlen. And I really miss him when he's gone.
MM
-
It's a tie between (for different reasons) Roger and Mrs. Johnson.
Luciaphil
-
Chris and Tom Jenning's (those dead ringer could be twins brothers)

No contest for me. Julia Hoffman has kept me loving this show for 35 years.
Bette
-
Oh, I have to give credit where it is due. If it hadn't been for Jonathon Frid, most of us would have never have even HEARD of DS, much less be able to watch it now. Barney is the man.
-
Of course, Maggie Evans and any other character played by TLTKLAS.
Gerard
-
For Female- It's Angelique!
For Male-It's a tie between Quentin & Barnabas! :)
-
For me, it is kinda obvious! ;)

I love Quentin, but Nicholas Blair runs a very close second. I am always thrilled to see him reappear!

This one is tough because there are so many dear to my heart but I guess I'll go with ...
Male: Quentin :-*
Female: Maggie :D
Close runners up - male: Willie, Roger, Chris
Close runners up - female: Liz, Julia, Carolyn
-
Mine is REALLY obvious, Harry Johnson (Craig Slocum), I will NEVER be swayed!
-
Willie--so well played by John Karlen. And I really miss him when he's gone.
MM
Same here, MM. He's my guy, too! :D
-
This one is really hard--there are so many great characters. My favorite is Barnabas (followed closely by Prof. Stokes and Julia).
-
Despite my nick, my fave character IS Barnabus. ::)
-
This is way too hard....
Male, Barnabas, Quentin, Willie
Female, Maggie, Angie
I know I can't seem to make up my mind. They are have special qualities.

Let me see........hmmmmm.......gotta think for a minute......hold on........it'll come to me..........just a second.....wait, wait......
OH, YEAH.....Willie.....yep, that's it....Willie Loomis!!

Forever, Barnabas. He's what kept me raptly watching every episode DS was on once he arrived on the show.
However, I liked many of the others, too--Julia, Maggie, Vicki, Angelique, Prof. Stokes, Roger, Carolyn, Mrs. Johnson (who I only appreciate now that I'm an adult).
Love, Robin

LOL.....I wonder??
DAPHNE!!!!!![/glow] [and male = Quentin, of course!] 2nd would be Leticia, tho....or any NB char :D :D
-
Do I realy have to say????
JULIA!!!
P.s. doesn't the number (I think 4) of Julia avatars compared to anyone else. . also tell you/us something?
-
I have to admit, I like Barnabas but..............who can resist those big, wild eyes of Angelique........ :)
-
My all time favorite is Barnabas. He just 'sends' me. Very quiet, nice and gosh darn it, people like him.
Its Barnabas, all the way. 8)
-
As if you couldn't guess ...
Julia! Julia! Julia!
Other characters for whom I have a sentimental attachment...
Barnabas ... I wonder whether other gay men of my generation (early 40s) identified with Barnabas as a child? He just seemed to encapsulate so perfectly the sense of being an outsider, a misfit, someone who didn't belong. I felt there was a world of difference between how his curse affected Barnabas, and how it affected Quentin.
Cassandra. I'm looking forward to the comments about her imminent introduction! She was on my second episode of DS, and her melodramatic flair had a lot to do with my getting hooked into watching the show.
Prof. T. Eliot Stokes was in my FIRST episode of DS, and I thought he was simply grand! Still think so today!
Nicholas. I still remember his arrival at Collinwood, and how intriguing he was. I thought Humbert added a very different kind of flair to the show--just as Grayson did when she arrived.
Chris. For some it's Barnabas, for others it's Quentin--for me, Chris is the major male heart throb of DS. And I thought that Don Briscoe made Chris (originally not a very sympathetic character--I think the "Marilyn" Ross novel involving the character gives you an idea of how DC might have seen the character play out) more three dimensional, poignant and real.
Count Petofi. I just love ALL of Thayer David's characters, but Petofi has such wonderful wit and cosmopolitan grandeur. I never tire of watching his episodes!
Pansy/Charity. I really love her scenes, especially whenever she's onscreen with Jerry Lacey (and he starts barking "Daughter!" at her).
Magda. Grayson Hall's favorite character, and I can really understand why!
There are others, too, but I am starting to write a book, so I'll desist for now. Julia still rules!

Got to go with Barney.
-
Seems my fav character changes all the time. For a long long time it was JUlia...Julia. [rollb]. Then I noticed Mrs. Johnson, love her earthy attitude. Now its elizabeth, great 60s fashion plate. Nathan could be really chilling, with his scarey eyes face. I always get a kick out of Millicent.
Love intrest BARNABAS
-
Is it a cop out to say that they're all my favorites for some reason or another? :D
My favorite couple is Quentin and Beth but if I had to pin down a favorite character or two I guess I'd say Elizabeth and Julia (hence my screen name)

I think Professor Stokes was the best character -- the impact he made out of such a small number of appearances says it all, really. He was just such a wonderful theatrical character, with that wonderful ability to make sardonic quips in a desperate situation sound like the most natural response imaginable. And of course the majority of that is due to Thayer David's perfect delivery, along with the natural poise and class he brought to the role.
From an actor's point of view, John Karlen was such an accomplished performer in the role of Willie -- the ability to convey high intensity without scenery chewing or histrionics really stands out for me when I view the show nowadays.

Interesting that you should say this Stuart. At 2002 FrightVision DS Q & A, Kathryn Leigh Scott said that she considered John Karlen to be the best actor of the Series.
-
Now that is hard one to answer but ...........
Male: BARNABAS, he's the only one that kept me coming back and Quentin too.
Female: All the way, ANGELIQUE and those big, alluring, see through you eyes.

Cheryl, do you always assist people at the polling place? ;)
-
No, but I notice you did not disagree either, so I was right. ;D
-
Boy, I think it would be easier to list who my favorite characters weren't. Picking one fave is tough - my answer would probably change on any given episode.
Consistently, I'd have to say Roger Collins is right up there. Off the top of my head I can't think of a single scene with Roger where I was ever bored.
Ben Stokes is another fave. While I also like the educated and sophisticated Professor of present day, there's something about good old "Gentle Ben" that makes him endearing in both 1795 and 1840.
There's no comparison to Nancy Barrett's portrayel of Charity Trask/Pansy Faye in 1897 - simply a highlight of the series.
So those are my top 3 picks. Ask me again tomorrow and I'll probably have three others!!!
-
I have to say Barnabas because he turned it all around and made DS the great show it was.
I also liked everything Louis Edmonds did: Roger and especially Joshua.
Thayer David was so great as Ben Stokes. I miss Ben.
Of course, he is great AS Professor Stokes! ::)
-
Quentin! Or maybe Angelique? Or maybe Willie?
I give I can't pick ::)
-
My all time favorite is Angelique.
I also love Barnabas; he is my favorite male role. I am beginning seeing the show a second time around and I pick up on many more things. I appreciate Professor Stokes more this time around. Thayer David is AWESOME as Stokes! Plus, I also like Maggie (but not Josette!). My least favorite character would have to be Trask (all three of them).

Female: Julia, of course...see avitar :-*
Male: Barnabas
-
I have many favorite DS characters such as:
Barnabas Collins.
Ghost of-or-Quentin Collins.
Count Petofi.
Judah Zachery.
Gerard Stiles.
John Yeager.
Werewolf.
Vampire Josette
Adam.
Aristede.
Mr. Best.
Jeb Hawkes.
there are many. many more!.....
-
Barnabas was the show. Every time he was on I had the hardest time following anything else including the story!! What a hunk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Linda
-
Now I like Barnabas but really ladies. . a **hunk**?? I don't think so, I don't see it not at all. . .I even wonder what Julia saw in him. . there were plenty of hunky guys hanging around. .Tom/Chris, Joel, Sebastian, Tony. . but Barnabas . .tortured soul, romantic yea but hunk? Explain please. . .
-
I have a lot of favorite characters, it's hard to choose between them! I like Victoria for reasons unknown to myself, she's just been one of my favorites. I liked her better in her early episodes then in the later ones where she was more of a reduced character. Carolyn is also one of my favorites. I enjoyed all of Nancy Barrett's performances on the show, espically Carolyn and Millicent. Angelique was great! Lara Parker acted out the role very well, and you could see the evil in Angelique's eyes! Maggie and Roger I also liked on the show.
-
Once again I have to give Grayson Hall her credit where it is due!...Go Julia Hoffman! GO!...she's definitely my favorite! ;D
-
The simplest way to return this topic to the 1st page is to post in it, and I hadn't added my vote for favorite character yet anyway... It's always been Quentin-- he captured my adolescent heart in 1968 and I think he's still to die for.
-
My fave is Quentin, Maggie, and Lady Kitty Hampshire, she looks so hot in that costume! :D
I also like Nicholas Blair, Magda (her accent is funny), Brutus, Barnabus, Edward Collins, and Oberon.
-
I must be the only one who thinks this, but....
Quentin and Beth :)
Although Liz and Julia are 1A on the list.....
-
Angelique/Lara Parker is my favorite because I have had a crush on her since I was 7 and her beauty and wickedness are just a rather exciting combination. As for who the best character overall was-Barnabas without a doubt-the heart and soul of the show's best moments. Difficult to say beyond that ...any KLS character, Julia and Willie not far behind...

Who's your favorite Dark Shadows character?
I know everyone can guess,
my favorite is me! Sarah Collins,
dead or alive she can play a mean flute. ;)
-
All one needs is to look at my username to guess who my favorite character is! ;)
Dark Shadows had many, many great characters but Barnabas is #1 in my book. :)
-
Barnabas is my favorite character too and pretty much the only reason I watched the show.

Male: Gotta be Barnabas! Female: Angelique (those eyes...those eyes!) ;)

Barnabas and Angelique, Angelique and Barnabas, ummm, there goes the one track mind again.....
-
That black actress who played the nurse.
-
My all time very favorite character of the show is Barnabas, Barnabas, Barnabas! Did I mention Barnabas? ;D LOL!
He has so many facets to his character, and who can not like that wonderful voice! I could listen to it all day! 8) :-*
-
Angelique--no one does it like
LP!
-
That black actress who played the nurse.
Hilarious!
-
I must be the only one who thinks this, but....
Quentin and Beth :)
Not the only one by a long shot (speaks she who has written a full novel and a novelette about them).
