Current Talk '04 I / Re:Humor on Dark Shadows

What a great idea for a thread, Julian! My own favorites tend to involve Mr. Frid also, no surprise there.

In fact, in that first scene you mention I think Barnabas says something about Willie "clinging to life like a leech". LOL!

And I love the scene where Tony Peterson is accusing Barnabas of having an affair with Carolyn. Tony, not being taken very seriously by Barnabas, says something like, "I don't enjoy being laughed at, Mr. Collins."

And Frid delivers the line so perfectly: "Then you shouldn't go around being so amuuuusing, Mr. Peterson."
Oh, that cracked my s*** right up!

One more: Love it when Julia and Barn are locking up Chris in the mausoleum during those moonlit nights and she worries that if the police find out that they may be accused of "harboring a werewolf" or words to that affect. That, IMHO, is one of the funniest ideas on the show ever!

Current Talk '04 I / Re:Hey! was Jonathan Frid sexy?

But JF has also made it very clear at even more recent Q&As at charity functions that he had absolutely no interest in ever being married to anyone - man, woman or fig bar. Some people are not the marrying kind and he's one of them.

Yeah, but what about an oat cake?

And yes, that whole "no woman would have me" thing seemed like just his polite/charming way of getting around the question.

However, fatherhood is an altogether different thing! So, Nancy, if he ever mentions anything about wanting an heir at this point in the game, please let the winker know that my services are available. ;)

Was he sexy? Was he sexy??? Oh come on, don't joke with me. :D If he wasn't, I wouldn't have watched DS more than a few times out of curiosity. Unlike now, where it's a part of my life, like food, sleep, etc.

But I think I see what you're getting at - the physical parts of it, the kissing and such, he always seems a bit reluctant about it.  :-*

I've heard him say that he had no idea he had any sex appeal until he played Barnabas. He also says that he never married because no woman would have him. Think he's halfway kidding about that, but also think it shows that he just doesn't see himself that way.

So it makes sense that his sexual side would come out in the more subtle, subversive ways as it does, but when he's expected to be more overt - gettin down to bidness with some girl half his age, no less - he would not be as comfortable.

Gee, this description reminds me of my husband.  He doesn't look like Mr. Frid, though.  Oh well, you can't have it all.

LOL! Yes, I have one of those at home too!

Now I like Barnabas but really ladies. . a **hunk**?? I don't think so, I don't see it not at all. . Explain please. . .

Yes, I agree. "Hunk" is not the word I would use. In fact, to me, it's got kind of yucky connotations. Like a dopey guy in an awful tank top.

Barney is, however, extremely hot. Why? Because it has to do with the person, not whether he has classic good looks or not. He was just really, really sexy. The way Frid portrayed him, he was so complex. In a single episode, you wanted to kiss him, slap him and then take care of him.

Of course, in combination with this, physically there was an awful lot to like as well, IMNSHO: The eyes, the voice, the tall, slim bod, the suits, the hands, the hair (when they weren't mucking it up), the...uh-oh I better stop now. [blshg]

Well, I can't say I have high hopes - most of the stuff I love about the original is just not possible to recreate: the tension/excitement/gaffes of the "live" show, the cast of mostly stage actors and, of course, Jonathan Frid.

But, heck, I don't mind thinking positively: if they could get Alan Rickman to dye his hair, add some more humor and still give it a moody feel like Joss Whedon's "Ripper" was supposed to have, I'd be there.

(And BTW, I browsed around the Tonight Show site and couldn't find this photo, so I'm assuming that it isn't still a part of the site. The reason I mention this is because we wouldn't want to be posting a photo here that's currently being offered on another site. We prefer that people post a link to the original site.  [winkg])

Oops. It is still there although it's kind of hard to find - it's in a pop up.

Sorry for my gaffe. Would you like me to replace the pic with the URL?

It sure does sound like it, doesn't it? Since I didn't see the show, I don't know if he claimed that. But I suspect they just don't know what they're talking about.

But it must be true if you read it on the Internet. ;)

In fact, here's a picture of him that I found on NBC's site! Oh dear, I hope you can see it.

The caption reads something like "Quentin Tarantino shows off his sporty cane that was once used by the character Barnabas Collins in TV's 'Dark Shadows'."

I ordered mine through Amazon (with "A Mighty Wind") and it is now somewhere in Illinois. Sigh. Oh well, I ordered it with my Amazon Visa, so at least I'll get the points.

Btw, Midnite, love your sig file. Long live Spike.

I think your "role" assignments are absolutely inspired, boykading!!  Did this come to you in the middle of  watching "Ocean's Eleven"?.....or perhaps listening to a CD of Frankie and Dino singing a duet?  ;)

Thank you Rainey, but you know, I don't really know how I thought of this! Maybe just from gazing at the wall near my desk, where I've got pictures of both Dino and Barn. That's the funny thing, the archetypes don't entirely match up for me - Dino is far and away my favorite Rat, but Barn's my absolute favorite Bat. [blackbat]

And HappyBat, loved your song suggestions! But still, the idea of Barn singing kind of gives me the Willies! ;)

Thanks to everyone who responded - you made me feel a little less cracked!

Here's something silly that's been sizzling on my brain pan for a while...The husband and I are big Rat Pack fans and after watching PT for the first time, it got me thinking that DS has some rat pack "counterparts".

First, Barn is Sinatra. He's the central figure, moody, romantic, an absolutely wonderful voice.

Quentin is Dino - the lovable rogue who likes his hooch.

Willie is sort of a cross between Sammy (multi-talented, loyal, diminutive) and Joey Bishop (comic relief with a NY accent).

Julia is definitely Shirley Maclaine - the redhead, who all the guys think of as a sister.

Roger's got kind of a Peter Lawford-lockjaw thing going.

Even though she's blond, Angelique is Ava Gardner - the beauty that Barn has an intenese love-hate thing with.

Roxanne is Mia Farrow - the much-younger waif that Barn hangs around with for a while to sort of, um, cleanse his palette.

I guess in a stretch you could say that Josette is like Nancy, Frank's first wife (and a brunette) - their relationship ended when they were both still young, but they remained close for the rest of his life.

So there you have it. Fun with archetypes. Does anybody see this besides me? Or am I on crack again?  ;)

Did anyone else notice that when Barn went to Buffie's apartment yesterday, you could totally see him put his fangs in before he bites her? Right after he comments on the "lovely painting", he's facing towards it and away from the camera but you can see his hand go up to his mouth and sort of fiddle around.

This just cracked me right up!*sigh* There's just no other show like this.

Current Talk '03 II / Barney breaks out?
« on: July 11, 2003, 04:25:56 PM »
Er, did anyone else notice that Barn has had a zit (or something) on the right side of his nose all week?

I'm not trying to be mean - I love that man to distraction - but well, it was just kind of hard to miss. In fact, Frid's looked kind of tired all week long. After filming a movie and going right back to the day job, I think someone needed a vacation!
