Thanks for posting Cousin.  The hotel has sold out the DS block rate of 139.00. The AAA rate is 151.00 and the regular rate is 159.00.

I just called and was able to get the $139 Dark Shadows rate.
Title: Re: ShadowGram Update #260: NYC DS Event Details

Thanks DLA75. What I did learn is that you need to speak directly with the hotel and not its central number which I was transferred to at that time. The central number staff don't have a clue how to handle reservations. After a considerable conversation they agrred that I pay the 139.00 for Friday and Saturday and then pay a 171.00 rate for that Sunday and physically change rooms on that day. I told them that was unacceptable. I then contacted the hotel directly and Hotel Manager Brian was very understanding and made the appropriate accommodations where I will pay 139.00 for all 3 nights without having to change rooms. There is however a question as to if the Dark Shadows Festival rate is full but it appears you can still get same price without mentioning the Festival's name. Thanks for the heads up.

I got a group email message the other day and accidentally deleted it but it said there was a reunion Friday the 27th of the 1991 series.  A few other friends heard as well but no details.  Is anyone on this board involved in that or aware of where it is held and what the details are?

I haven't received anything in the mail yet (I sent in a self-addressed stamped envelope a couple of months back), and hadn't seen this announcement until someone here notified me. So I'm just finding out about this today (March 30). This is several days since Jimbo's post. Is the hotel booked already? If this is in Tarrytown (which I'd love to go to), I imagine this is a much smaller scale than the other DS Fests. If Tarrytown is booked, then, out of luck?

My general understanding is that the Hotel will honor the DS rate even though the DS Festival block may be sold out which it was when I made the reservation. The main thing is to make sure you are speaking directly with the hotel and ask for Brian, the hotel manager who told me that he will honor the discounted rate. Hope it works out.

A mailing would be appreciated at this point. Or at least an update on the Festival website which is still promoting the 2011 event.

I did receive my mailing from the Festival yesterday.

I called the hotel on Tuesday using the number provided by ShadowGram. This is the same number found on the website for the Tarrytown Doubletree.

As I went further and further into the menu options, I had the feeling that I was not in Kansas anymore leaving the actual hotel and delving deeper into a national type of phone bank. That seemed to be confirmed when the young woman kept repeating that the reservation I was making was for the Tarrytown, New York DoubleTree, at such-and-such an address.

Anyway, she said that the arrangements for the Dark Shadows rate were good for three days only, Thursday through Saturday. The rate for an additional night, Sunday, would be $256 for that night. I told her that was too much and I didn't know what to do. She recommended I still book for Thursday through Saturday because there were only three rooms left at that rate.

Is that really the arrangement that the Dark Shadows festival made with the hotel? Why weren't they more explicit in their information? For those who must leave on Sunday, are we supposed to bring our suitcase with us to the lunch? What if there is no flight leaving to go back to Kansas home later in the day?

What I really want and had planned to do was stay Sunday night and leave Monday morning.

What can possibly be done? There is no other number to call. They said this is what the rates are.

I don't know, I've never paid $256 for one night in a hotel room before, but maybe I'll have to bite the bullet?

There may be other hotels, but how convenient would that be? I'd prefer to stay at the hotel where the festival events are being held, especially since this would be my first time in Tarrytown.

Cousin I booked the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Tarrytown for $139.00 for three nights including that Sunday for a total of 417.00. I arrive on Friday the 27th and depart Monday morning. It is clear to me that you did not speak with the hotel directly. Yes I agree its menu system is confusing and illogical. I too was told by the hotel central booking that I had to pay that unbelievable price you mentioned for that Sunday. After three attempts I finally got the hotel's manager. I don't remember which menu number I selected. I don't understand why a 914 (NY) area code gets you transferred to another state. They should have made it easier for us to contact the hotel directly. I haven't received any mailing yet for the Fest. Hope you make first contact with the hotel directly.

Call the hotel and ask to speak to the Hotel Manager, Nicely explain your situation and ask them to correct the reservation if you made it or to make one for Friday check out on Monday, that is what I did. DO NOT select the reservation number because they are idiots.

i understand that this year there will be no dealers room.

that, and the skimpy guest list, and the out of the way location(and the insane behavior of the outer fringes of this fanbase regarding the film)have pretty much killed my enthusiasm for this year's fest...i mean "event". [easter_undecided]
Title: Re: ShadowGram Update #260: NYC DS Event Details
Post by: Philippe Cordier on April 14, 2012, 06:12:38 PM
I am so relieved ... I was able to speak with a staff member at the hotel itself through the "O" option on the menu, and she was able to extend my stay through Sunday night at the DS rate. She mentioned something about a few rooms being available so that she could do that, although the DS block had been filled. Not sure how the festival organizers set this up with the hotel.

Well, the first hurdle is over ... next will be finding a flight, deciding on an airport, and figuring out how to get to Tarrytown. Thank you to everyone who helped.

that was my thought when i received my mailing too. nonevent would be more like it.

unless one was very eager to meet ms.scott and ms.parker or see lyndhurst it's almost not worth it. personally i've had enough of scott hawking her wares lately.

frankly with the unfortunate passing of jonathan frid i'm surprised it hasn't been cancelled.

he was the main draw.

and for various reasons the rest of the "gang" will not be in attendance.

with just 2 guests it feels like a flatliner.

it seems like the main action will be on the west coast this year.

Unfortunately, the two events together do not equal a true Festival.

True enough, but for the more or less local fans it will likely be a de facto memorial for Mr. Frid. I'd like to go just to hear some fan remembrances; I think the time slot allotted for Mr. Frid would be better served now by hearing some words of closure from folks like Nancy and Will McKinley and Joe Nass.

Why the negative attitude?  Are you sure you guys are fans?  If anything, I feel more stars will be added to the July event to help fill up the huge gap left by Jonathan's passing.  On the East Coast alone there's Marie Wallace, Donna Wandrey, Nancy Barrett, Sharon Smyth, Betsy Durkin, and Donna McKechnie.  Plus, there's even more stars out in California who have gone East before- who knows, maybe one or two will fly over just to pay tribute to Jonathan.

Well, for people who now feel it is not worth going with the sad passing of Mr. Frid, I am sure there is still time to cancel hotel reservations for the event.  I have never really been a fan of either HODS or NODS so the ideal of an event mostly touring Lyndhurst with minimal programming was not that big a draw for me, but each to his own.

charles...

we're all just expressing opinions at this board. no one is "right". no one is "wrong". they're just opinions.

the event sounds like a dud to me so i'm not going. if you want to go, go. it doesn't matter to me.

what i will not participate in however is a third grade p*ssing contest about whether or not i'm a "fan". that nonsense is more suitable to the IMBD board.

don't ever pull that with me again. ever.

I just don't like the idea of pessimism in DS fandom.  I have been active in fandom for 28 years now, and I remember the struggles DS fans had in those days just to have local stations (and later PBS stations) air the episodes.  I also remember how warring factions nearly threatened to destroy DS fandoms as some of the early conventions (the Shadowcons) began to add non-DS events and stars while diminishing the importance of "Dark Shadows".  This led to the creation of the DS Festivals which above all is a celebration of ALL things DS, and it pains me to see anyone put down what took years to build.  There are many of us who do care- we are the ones who always attend plays or films featuring the DS actors, buy the various books that have been put out by various actors (novels, memoirs, and other non-fiction items).  If you don't want to go the July events, OK-but don't insult those of us who will be there and especially the DS actors who come out their own free will to meet the fans.  All I am asking is to show proper respect, especially as the whole DS community is mourning over Jonathan.

I received my receipt today in the mail! Now it feels official and I am very excited. It sounds like an intimate and low key event but at the same time a nice schedule of activities to keep your interest. If I read it correctly it sounds like the area near the stables will be tented.  There was a nice flyer inside regarding Jonathan's passing.

Looking forward to seeing everyone and catching up on things!

I've attended three festivals, and Mr. Frid was only at the last of the three. It never occurred to me that people wouldn't want to go to a festival because Mr. Frid wouldn't be there - and he has been as close to my favorite cast member as I could ever choose as a favorite.
Title: Re: ShadowGram Update #260: NYC DS Event Details
Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on April 28, 2012, 05:39:56 PM
Certainly no disrespect to Frid intended because his contributions to DS were outstanding, but most of the most successful Fests were during the years when Frid was no longer attending and before his return. So, his passing needn't necessarily have much of an impact on the future of Fests. Though it probably should also be pointed out that those were also the years when DS was running on the Sci-Fi Channel, so the original show was getting the type of exposure that it isn't currently getting. But with the new film's release, who knows what type of an impact it may have on the Fests in the future...

i never thought that frid's unfortunate passing necessarily affected the attendance or success of future fests or events.

just that given that he was this year's highlighted guest and that with only two remaining guests and for an event already so massively scaled back(apparently there is not even a dealers room)and with so much emphasis on the west coast event it seemed almost not worth it this time around.

but that's just me. i hope for those attending it's enjoyable.

Post by: Mysterious Benefactor on April 28, 2012, 06:15:10 PM
Oh, I wasn't really even replying to your post, michael c, or even referring to this year's NY event - I was simply trying to say something in general terms. As I've said in the past, it seems that fandom can often be split down two major lines: the strictly Barnabas fans and the fans who enjoy the whole DS package. The strictly Barnabas fans' Fest attendance may be affected by Frid's passing, though they may continue to show up to pay tribute to him and to support what will no doubt be many tributes to him at future Fests. But if the success of the non-Frid Fests are an indication, the whole package fans could continue to keep the Fests going for years and years to come if the surviving actors remain willing to continue to attend...

I hope all of you going to the Vista event will have a great time.  I would be sitting impatiently during HODS, though, waiting for the new movie to start.  And if the guy with the guitar is coming to this event, I hope he leaves it at home this time (I am SO bad,,,,)

What I wrote yesterday, in the newest ShadowGram topic, was:

The update doesn't name the DS guests for Tarrytown, but Jerry Lacy has confirmed, Marie Wallace plans to attend, and Kathy Cody has approached Jim Pierson about being there (at her own expense).  And of course LP and KLS.

The source is Cody herself.  The issue was her airfare since she still resides in Florida, but after learning of JF's passing, she said she offered to pay her own travel to Tarrytown and Jim's response was that it can be arranged (meaning the Festival would cover the rest).  I'll send you the link to her April 23 post, Nancy and michael c, though I wouldn't consider it a confirmation that she'll attend.
