Only Grayson could manage to look as if she's voguing in a shot where she's playing a dead body.

What a GREAT artist she was!

Calendar Events / Announcements '16 II / Sam Hall Interview

Extremely candid--a euphemistic way of saying "gossipy"--interview with Sam Hall, done when he was 85 and Dan Curtis had gone on to that great green room in the sky:

That's a beautiful shot of Selby as Quentin. Would make an awesome poster or DVD cover.

The episode in the link has Roger informing Angelexis with delicious venom that comparing Maggie to Angelique would be like trying to compare a sable to a mouse.  Lara's expression is priceless.

Happy Holidaze!

Current Talk '16 II / The Artistry of Louis Edmonds
« on: December 19, 2016, 11:45:17 PM »
One of my favorite performances from Louis Edmonds was when he was allowed to play Parallel Time Roger Collins as a gossipy, vitriolic drunk, reminiscent of the character of Harold in BOYS FROM THE BAND.  This episode which I learned is one of a group from 1970 on Youtube is a fab example of how brilliantly Louis played the role:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8o9dZdiMbhI&t=101s

I think it is actually my favorite character he played.  Maybe tied with the original 1966 characterization of Roger who was deliciously snide and devious.

That's a fabulous shot of Dan shooting the Carlotta jump sequence.  Johnny is right in character even though the camera isn't on him.  Now, that's training!

I'd forgotten about those heels Grayson wore as part of the Carlotta costume.  Fabulous... and no doubt excruciating by the end of each day.

That shot of her on that box really is a hoot!  Can't believe that was used for one of the lobbies.  Somebody was really asleep at the wheel the day they did that layout!!

The production still where it shows that Grayson was standing on a box for that scene is a fun one.

I can just hear her saying when she got home, "Sam!  I worked MY ASS OFF today! Gimme a g & t and make it snappy!"

Hi Patti, Bruce Bennett was born Herman Brix--no relation to Joan.

Joan's Dad, Richard, was an actor (I think he did some silent films).  I believe her other siblings were sisters.

I haven't looked at my own photocopy of Grayson's script in a long time, but my memory of her notation for this sequence is that she interpreted Carlotta's action as "proving" that only if both Quentin AND Carlotta released, or let go of the spirit of Angelique, would the latter truly fade away into eternal rest (or whatever awaits a soul after death).

I thought she wrote "Proof that it's got to be both ways," but again, I haven't pulled out my photocopy to check--maybe Darren will have something to contribute.  If I find it, I will update here.

Calendar Events / Announcements '16 II / Lara Parker Autographed Book Offer
« on: December 17, 2016, 04:40:10 AM »
Lara Parker happened to mention (on her Facebook page) that fans can order autographed copies of her books (and some other items) from her website:

https://laraparkersite.blogspot.com/p/autographed-merchandise.html

It seems a bit confusing because she gives instructions to mail a check to a PO Box in Topanga, but there are also Paypal buttons (they say "buy now") on the site, so presumably one could write a note on the Paypal form letting Lara know if the autograph should be personalized.

It might be too late for holiday ordering but just wanted to let fans know she is doing this.

"The girls work on" Quentin...

I'm just imagining the stampede here if somehow Dan Curtis were to appear and bark, "OK, ladies, I need a coupla girls to WORK ON Quentin Collins.  Anyone up for that?"

Curtis might not even have time to put his cigarillo down before the mob trampled him...

I just love this thread!!

Darren, those notes are fascinating.  Thanks so much for sharing all that.

My heart aches for you whenever I think about this movie.

Wishing you a happy holiday and a Happy New Year!

I love it whenever we have a thread here about THE PEN.  The true megastar of DARK SHADOWS.

I do find myself laughing whenever I play one of those shows and the characters earnestly recite dialogue about how rare and valuable it is.  It was probably something they found at Woolworth's for 99 cents.  Like Barnabas's ring.  Quote Frid:  "It was a tacky old thing."

My good buddy Curt Ladnier just posted another collection of DS 1991 bumpers and ephemera he has digitized from his original 1991 home-recorded videotapes.  You'll all have seen some of this in other venues, but there might be a few bits and bobs in here that are new.  I don't know enough about it to confirm Curt's statement that some of this material has never been seen elsewhere since the original broadcasts:

I wish I had a stronger visual memory of seeing the footage of this scene (in black and white, due to some kind of technical situation I didn't understand--if fully restored, it would have been seen in full color) and without any soundtrack, at a DS Festival many years ago.  The main thing I recall was the extraordinarily fluid camerawork and atmospheric use of lighting.

My impression at the time was that it might well have been the best piece of film Dan Curtis ever produced.

Thanks to Darren for making it available briefly for us.

I'm thinking now of Sandor's words from the 1897 story on the original series:  "What might have been... can never be."

cheers, G.
