Dark Island Meets Gilligan's Shadows

For those of you who have been wondering what the Professor on Gilligan's Island was doing in the years before he boarded the ill-fated SS Minnow, I think today's second episode has cemented my suspicions. He was obviously working for Dr. Lang as his assistant before Jeff Clark materialized in Collinsport. For today, I got a good look at that lab equipment! I spotted what looked to be a flat silver cover of some sort (with handle), what I am almost positive was a slide projector wheel, chicken wire, and last but not least; what appeared to be the heating element from an oven, (no doubt a gift from Roger who loathes Mrs. Johnson's cooking). I guess that's one way to ensure ordering take-out a few times a week.

The Professor sure knew how to make do with whatever was lying around when he had to!

Dom (Who keeps coming across words that are not in the spell-check dictionary. And I'm not talking about the ones that I make up either! This time it was, "gift" and "boarded").

I still can't make out what half of that stuff is that they have lying around there for the experiment. There seems to be plenty of colored water bottles all over the place, and those knobs reminded me of an old oven that someone discarded.  And what the heck is that orange wheel they have hanging up there for? It sort of looks like some kind of steering device that came off of a boat!

Not to mention there's like NOTHING connecting the two bodies to each other! There's something 2 restrain the body on its gurney, but there's nothing that would actually cause it to MOVE, much less to connect the two bodies. UMMM .... how exactly do you zap life from one being into another being when they're not even connected? I would think there'd be some sort of equiptment like shock therapy style or something, with stuff attatched to one's temples and heart or something. GAH!! I hate this plot!!!

And the deep-fry sounds of the equipment during the experiment creeped me out!

When Barnabas walked in on him, I kept expecting Jeff Clark to offer up some Cajun-Fried Angelique as the special of the day.

Agreed, Jennifer. That look of surprise was too much! I'm glad MB put it in the montage (a picture is worth a thousand words). It was rivaled only by Diana Walker's look of surprise in the foyer of Collinwood during her one time stint as Caroline Stoddard.

Hey gang,

The other day, when Prof. Stokes was in the Old House basement/laboratory with Jeff Clark, and the good professor was eying all of the equipment, I was really hoping that the magnificently mercurial Mr. Clark would explain the exact function of all of that equipment to the professor.

"Let's see, professor, that gadget regulates the 'life force' level.  And that gizmo over there monitors the pain threshold of the 'life force' donor."  By the way, that big electric switch on the basement wall looks surprisingly like the electric switch that they used to "juice" Bruno Hauptmann back in 1936.

For years I have kept bottles and jars full of colored water on windowsills in my kitchen.  It's just plain pretty when the sunlight hits them just right.

People always ask me where I got the idea...as though a jar with colored water in it was such a Martha Stewart Project that I must have read it somewhere.

I guess I just remembered where I REALLY got the idea!!

I happened to see the great Pat Cooper on TV the other day.  Mr. Cooper says that when his wife puts Martha Stewart on the tube, he can't hear what Ms. Stewart is saying because she speaks so darned softly!  "You should try to arrange the flowers in this manner," she explains, in a sotto voce tone.  "Turn up the TV volume!" Mr. Cooper urges his wife.

By the way, the sixty-something Mr. Cooper reports that when he tried the new, blue wonder pill, Viagra, only his right leg stiffened up!  (Maybe Roger should have tried that pill before Cassandra split!)

BTB! I haven't seen or thought of Pat Cooper in centuries (except once)! What a bus load of memories your post brought back. PC records were a staple in my families' homes when I was growing up in the Sixties. I barely understood the jokes and I still laughed my face to soreness. I did happen to catch him on TV a few years ago but I have absolutely no recognition of it except for the way he looked. Thanks for the memory jolt!

In the middle of all this discussion about the equipment in the lab and the sound effects when they are in use, I don't remember if anyone has commented on the fact that all this electrical stuff is being used in a 200 year old house that is still lit by candles...presumably because it's NEVER BEEN WIRED!!!

It occured to me a day or two ago, while watching  Barnabas skulking around down in the lab, that there are CANDLES in the wall sconces, right in the middle of all the equipment.

Was the set director an idiot?  Why leave the candles to draw attention to a really stupid inconsistency?

I know, I know, these shows were never meant to be seen more than once, much less scrutinized by fanatics like us.  But some of these blunders were just TOO egregious....like candles right next to the gizmos and gadgets  !

I'm almost positive that Jeff Clark explained this to Stokes the other day by stating that Hoffman had a generator installed to run the equipment. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Hey gang,

Now that Dr. Lang's powerful generator is in the Old House basement, I have to believe that ol' Willie has hooked up his Sony portable TV to the generator.

That way, Willie can stay home and watch Johnny Carson's opening monologue and subsequent "Mighty Carson Art Players" dramatic presentations on the "Tonight Show" instead of hanging out seemingly every night at the Blue Whale and getting plastered, much to the chagrin of one Mr. Bob Rooney.
