A friend asked me to look up some box office info for
The Avengers, and while I was doing that I noticed that for the first time ever DS actually bested a part of
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island's gross - in this case it being what that film grossed during its 12th week's Monday-Thursday period - and it bested it by a sizable amount. So, as per usual, that got me wondering how things might compare with the other top films in their 12th week's Monday-Thursday period vs. their weekends:
M-T | Film | Week's Gross | M-T Gross | Percent | Per Screen |
=== | ======================= | =========== | ======== | ====== | ========= |
1 | The Hunger Games{1} | $1,713,298{1} | $641,085 | 37.4% | $1,428{2} |
2 | Marvel's The Avengers{2} | $1,045,837{2} | $425,426 | 40.7% | $859{4} |
3 | The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel{5} | $700,284{3} | $283,493 | 37.4% | $984{3} |
4 | To the Arctic (IMAX){9} | $492,789{7} | $248,637 | 50.5% | $4,781{1} |
5 | 21 Jump Street{6} | $577,387{6} | $200,996 | 34.8% | $609{8} |

The number in {} after a film's name indicates how it ranked during its 12th weekend, the number in {} after the week's gross indicates how a film ranked compared to the other films in their entire 12th week, and the number in {} after the per screen indicates how a film's per screen for its 12th week's Monday-Thursday period ranked vs. the other films for that period. And BTW, I didn't figure out all those figures on my own - Box Office Mojo has charts with all that info, so I merely copied and pasted. )
Things didn't turn out all that differently for DS as far as rank goes because it simply slipped from 7th to 8th and its per screen remained 5th. However, for the Monday-Thursday period its per screen was over $100 more than the per screen in 6th place, and that difference was not only an amount much more than the difference was between 5th and 6th over the weekend (that difference was only $17), but more than the difference was between 5th and 8th (which was $84).
On the other hand, just look at how so much is different when it comes to many of the other films! And who would have ever thought that
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island would have performed so comparatively poorly during the week than it did during the weekend?!
I haven't checked the figures for
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island's 13th week - but it's going to be very interesting to see how DS' performance will compare to it.
