They just emailed out the cyber addition of ShadowGram and the upcoming Fest was officially announced, but so far it seems no guests have been confirmed.  You should email Marcy Robin at ShadowGram@aol.com and get on the mailing list for the online cyber Gram.  That way, when they start announcing guest you'll have the email to tell you. ;)

Receiving them that way was spotty for me, so I subscribed to the Yahoo e-list.  For consistency, I recommend it--

Then again, there's a reason some call it Yahell.  ::)

Since it is the 40th Anniversary, it would be nice if the big three holdouts (Alexandra Moltke, Kate Jackson, and David Henesy) finally showed up and if Jonathan came down from Canada for the shindig.  And what about Lela Swift, Sam Hall, and D.C. himself???

I'm in the DS netherworld.   The fandom will never extend itself out to Chicago, will it?    And my travel capabilities are limited damn it.

Speaking of Chicago Magnus...I've always thought that would be a GREAT place to hold a DS festival (okay, weekend).  It's never been done as far as I know and it would be an interesting change of pace.  Not to mention my more selfish reasons for wanting it to happen there...it's only a few hours drive from me!  The Hilton Towers or the Palmer House would be great hotel choices IMO...they have really nice size, attractive rooms and some also have two bathrooms!  Also, the Palmer House is within walking distance of some pretty cool stuff...it's right down the street from the old Marshall Field's store and just a couple of blocks from the Chicago Art Museum!  Both hotels have excellent convention facilities too.  It's a great town and I think it would be a fun time for all.

I agree! It'd be great to have one in the Mid-west.

I've been saying for years they should have one in DC!  I even have the hotel picked out, the Key Bridge Marriot which is just across the river in Arlington and walking distance from the Metro (DC's subway).  You have all the sight-seeing attractions of our nations capitol, Arlington Cemetary and the Iwa Jiwa Marine Memorial (which is also walking distance from this hotel) to interest fans.  And, if you're a Civil War buff, Manassas Battlefield is a 30 minute drive away.  But, alas, TPTB on the Fest committee are short-sighted and will only have them in LA or NY.  :(

I think it would be great to have the festival in other areas of the country.

I've been told that the reason why the fests are held in NYC and LA is because most of the attending cast members live in either one city or the other, or both cities.  This cuts down on plane fare expenses and other costs for the festival.

Question, then why did the Fest Committee do a survey several years back of what other cities the fans would like the Fest to go to?  This was before the Vegas Fest I believe.  They had ppl send in their ideas of where they would like to go for Fests, but then nothing ever came of it.  What you say makes total sense, but then why that survey?  To quote Vickie, "I don't understand."   :(

My, but you are the flatterer, aren't you? [blshy]

On a less narcissistic note  [confused5a]...

I, too, would love to see the DS events held in different cities each year.  The considerable discounts on hotel rooms make the DS events the perfect forums for visiting a new city.  I don't know about anyone else, but I think the registration fee for the Fests is really quite reasonable and I certainly wouldn't object to paying a bit more in order to cover the additional costs of bringing the cast members to a city other than New York or Los Angeles.

Another thought is to make the events more intimate, so to speak, with fewer cast members and more chances for them to do Q&A sessions, dramatic readings, etc.

I think you are probably, sadly right Nancy. Still, it does seem strange that they made such an effort to ask about other cities. Most especially, I'm sure it was stated by Jim at the end of one of the shows about 4 years ago that "Next year we will be in San Francisco..." That choice couldn't be too inconvenient for transporting the LA area guests, could it?
KLS asked a group of us the same question and she was surprised to get a large number of suggestions. If I recall, pretty much the most popular alternate cities suggested were New Orleans (pre Katrina), London, Washington DC and even Bangor. I think all of them would be great, as well as the aformentioned Chicago or even St. Louis for another central USA town. I have to admit I like the idea of having a DS weekend in Bangor or Boston as they were mentioned so often on the series. With the Friday "roadtrip" to Salem!  [Witch00] [_witch_]

Right on Michael!  I'm right there w/ya!  I've been to Salem, it's a neat little town.  I would love to go back when we have a fulll day to explore (we got there late in the day).  I also like the idea of Bangor or even Portland as that was mentioned quite a bit on the show too.

As another poster mentioned, $25 for one, sometimes it's $25 for TWO ppl, to attend is way more than reasonable.  I too wouldn't mind paying a little more to go to a different city.  I mean, I *love* NYC, but I would love to, just once, stay home and have the Fest come to me in DC!  ;)

You're all assuming here is logic involved here?  E.g.  the survey . .sure we all filled it out and participated but i'm sure the results went into file 13. . and as to some of the elders participating .. Swift, Curtis himself. . well there is an age factor (they're all 80+ years old) and i believe ill health might interfere with some of these folks attending not ill will.

As for Isles, Hennessy and Jackson ..well who can say?  They've just moved on. . .

I have the best hopes for Kate Jackson, and perhaps Kathy Cody making first appearences. Kate Jackson has just started doing fan shows in the last two years, admittedly moreso because of the Charlies Angels series than us, and Kathy Cody was scheduled for last year but canceled due to illness. I think Alexandra would be great and my one great wish is that all attendees would respect her private life and stick to speaking to her on her work or at the most her son. I can understand her having been reluctant to attend, thinking someone is likely to ask something inappropriate. Nonetheless, the reception she at the Dark Shadows evening at the Director's Guild was so warm that I think she was surprised and touched. I actually was lucky enough to meet Lela Swift at that event in the lobby afterwards, and she told me she "...didn't know why she hadn't been to a DS show lately" and implied she wasn't being asked. I would think Lela would be one of the first people asked, I think she probaly worked on more single epsiodes than anyone.

PS: When in New York, I honestly recommend the Sunday Brunch at the Slaughtered Lamb Pub in Greenwich Village,

I would LOVE to meet Kate Jackson, not only for DS but Charile's Angels AND The Rookies!  I watched her in all three shows and she seems like a cool person.  Would be great for her and David Selby to do a Q&A together.  I agree that it would be too cool for Alexandra to show up too and would also expect everyone to leave her private life alone.  I think they would, only an incredible clod would ask about Klaus.

I too HIGHLY reccommed The Slaughtered Lamb, it is fantastic and I've eaten there many times, once w/Louis Edmonds even!  (he had the French onion soup and said it was great!)  ;)  It's got great atmosphere but be warned, it *is* a small place. ;)

why did the Fest Committee do a survey several years back of what other cities the fans would like the Fest to go to?  This was before the Vegas Fest I believe.

Was it?  [hdscrt]  I could swear it was after, or at least after the Vegas Fest had already been announced. At the time the survey was taken I seem to recall reading posts in topics about the survey on the various DS boards and attending chats in which some fans said how much they wanted the Fests to remain in only NY and LA because they were disappointed with the Vegas location in particular because they had no interest in gambling or Vegas-style shows. They feared other non-NY/non-LA locations would also be lacking in the extracurricular activities they enjoy in NY and LA.

But, anyway, regardless of when the survey was, apparently ours is not to reason why we're surveyed about anything.  ;)  For example, what was the point of the most recent survey about whether we'd be interested in a new DS as a primetime or daytime series on cable or network TV? The point of these surveys would seem to be just to see where the fans' minds might be at, but then to do very little with that info.  :-

Well....
I don't know WHY they have to have it in Brooklyn again.   :P
I mean, if you're gonna have it in NY, then have it in midtown Manhattan for cryin' out loud.  Then there are places to go and things to do.
And if there are those who don't have any place they want to go, they can organize a candlelight vigil and take a walk down 53rd street to number 433.  It could be in protest of sacred ground being used in an inappropriate manner - or some such thing.

there is a very nice museum(world class egyptian collection for the laura collins in you)and a botanical garden both of which are only about four subways stops away from the hotel.

i'll post more specifics closer to the time of the fest.

I could be remembering incorrectly, but I swear that back in the day, the Fest rate for rooms at the Marriott Marquis (a PRIME location) was $99/night.

Still, Brooklyn is just a short subway ride to Manhattan, so it's not remote by any means.

As for Salem, I spent several days there a few summers ago, and I absolutely loved it.  I've been craving a return trip ever since.

That was the Festival room rate indeed, which is why I don't think we go there anymore, they were losing money!  It's prime, mid-town real estate near everything!   ;)

Midtown and the theatre district have been losing some of their oldest businesses lately due to the real estate market. The Howard Johnson's facing Times Square closed within the past year. Barrymore's will close at the end of the month.

A lot of the hotels near Times Square don't have convention facilities adequate for the DS Fest crowd. The ones that do typically have higher room rates. The going rate for a room at the Marquis right now is around $270.  :o

Halloween is the most popular time of year in Salem, in terms of tourism.  According to one person I spoke to, people book rooms one year in advance!  I wasn't there in October, but they have something happening every night of the month.

Considering how small Salem is (the tourist area, that is), if there were a DS Halloween event, the fans would more or less own the town for that weekend.

That is the major reason I made the decision to move out of New York City.  After having produced over 100 new play readings and productions, I couldn't afford the rentals for rehearsal space or performance anymore.

I will so miss Barrymore's.  I had many a great time there.

A friend of mine who is a travel agent and books the DS' actor flights told me that the Marriott Marquis wasn't thrilled with the DS festivals there only because the fans tended not to use the hotel vendors.  When a hotel gives a big discount to an incoming group, it's with the belief they will also shop at the stores and use the salons there in the hotel.  The Fest crowd didn't do that so there was no benefit to be gained giving a big discount.  Even with a small discount the cost for the hotel would still be out of reach for most people.

That hotel in Tarrytown SUCKED from the word go!  The service in the restaurant's and bars was slow and overpriced, the ATM broke *Friday* night so no cashola for the weekend unless you went to the front desk where they gave you attitude, and don't get me started on the Marriot Nazi's!  We ended up eating at a deli down the street and went to Friday's on Saturday night.  The only thing that I *did* like was the pool/hot tub, those I must say were pretty schweet!

I too am sorry to see Barrymore's close!  We had many a drink after seeing shows there!  Ah the memories....

It was terrible service - very slow.  I liked the Tarrytown Hotel other than the slow restaurant service, early closing hours I thought (if I recall correctly).  If you didn't have access to a car or were not willing to walk a bit, you were out of luck in getting any other kind of food.

i "day-tripped" it at the 2004 tarrytown fest so i wasn't really reliant on the hotel services but even so i was stunned at the location's lack of convieniences.it was sort of in this depressing office park setting in the middle of nowhere.why was this location ever chosen?

even after the 2003 brooklyn fest i vowed never to shell out the $$$ for the banquet ever again.no "stars" were seated at my table, for some reason i recall the video presentation was canceled and the meal itself was the classic "rubber chicken dinner".hospital food and unless i'm remembering this wrong no wine. ::)

Yes it's true, you *did* need a car, which we fortunately had having driven up from New Jersey Friday afternoon.  I think they picked the location because it's where the movies were filmed.  If I'm not mistaken, wasn't there a day trip to Lyndhurst and the cemetary?

I have vowed several times to never do the banquet again, because the food is lousy and the programming, when they have it, isn't usually that big a deal.  Plus they seem to always start late.  But I must say, I did do the banquet in Hollywood, which actually started on time, or close enough, the programming was okay, the raffle was fun even though I didn't win, a friend on mine did and I got the vegatarian meal this time because I too am sick of eating rubberized 'pigeon'!  ;)  Get the vegatarian meal, it's not bad actually.  As for stars at my table, I couldn't care less about that, I'd rather sit w/friends.  As long as there's no freaky fans who haven't bathed in 3 days [repuke]...LOL! Those ppl are RIPE by Sunday night, LOL!   [vryevl]  And we bring our own cocktails...hee-hee! [beer]

I think a lot of the Tarrytown fest dpended on whether you had a car or not. They dodn't have great lunch service available. Again, I need to warn first time attendees, that DS conventions are designed for people who don't have meals betweem 9:00 am and 9:00 pm  :-X. Really, Tarrytown had a nice diner down the street, and we drove up one side of the Hudson river up to West Point and then back down. (Diane was born on Poughkepsie so we got to that show a day early to make the drive.)  But if you didn't have a car, other than the great pool and hot tub, it would have bit the big one. The Brooklyn Marriott has some good places to eat nearby. There's one street full of nice international restaurants about 2 blocks over,  [banana] [chkyb] [chkyg] [chkyy]  and the next block over had some take outs and Subway. The Brooklyn Marriott has a nice restaurant, but at Marriott prices, meaning breakfast about $20 per person. Nice for one day but pricey on day 3. Then again, there's the subway to Manhattan. There's also a nice pool and gym at the Brooklyn.

No joke!!  If you are hypo-glycemic, take a bagged lunch in the main room w/you and plenty of snacks, water etc...  However, if you're on your 3rd, 4th, 5th or beyond Fest, you've pretty much seen all your going to see and can pick and choose what you want to see and when you want to leave to go eat.  ;)

Really, Tarrytown had a nice diner down the street

If it's the diner I'm thinking of--The El Dorado--they *are* pretty good and we've eaten there over the years whenever we make a road trip to Tarrytown/Essex/Norwalk/Newport.  There was a deli down the street was NICE!  We ate lunch and breakfast there all weekend.  And the price was right!  Their chicken salad was KILLER!  ;)

For some reason a lot of ppl didn't like the Brooklyn Marriot, I thought it was nice and like you say, there was a subway stop a block from the place that would take you in to the city.  ;)

That diner is terrific, Buzz.  I have eaten there too many times and the food is good and the price is right.

I liked the Brooklyn Marriott too.  For anyone wanting to go into the city, it's an easy ride.

I had dinner at the Marriott in Tarrytown with three of the most entertaining gentlemen I've ever met.  I didn't actually give a DAMN what I was eating.......[lghy]

There's another great old fashioned american diner in downtown Sleepy Hollow/Tarrytown called The Horseman, with the obvious theme. They have great sandwiches and breakfast as well. We've eaten there 4-5 times on DS trips.

from the shadowgram update it sounds like the same actors as ususal are coming(not that i'm not always delighted to see them).doesn't it always seem like the "surprise" guest turns out to be terry crawford?

the only genuine "surprise" guests would be jonathan, mitch, alexandra, kate and david henesy and we know how likely that is. :P

It's not NY or LA, LOL!  Seriously, I think they've pretty much said they will only do Fest's in NY or LA.  It sucks really, I'd love to see one come to DC!

This is very iinteresting Michael, and I think it was great that Alexandra and Kate were also at the Museum of Radio and Television tribute to DS, DC was there, too. You notice, though, that there was a big hole on that stage, Jonathan was not there.  Jonathan SHOULD have been there, since this was a serious event honoring DS as a television milestone, but he was not there.  If Jonathan could not bring himself to go to the MTR event, I see no way he would go to the 40th anniversary fest, where while he would get a tumultuous standing room only reception, he would probably find it to be the same old same old with not much new to interest him in coming to Brooklyn....

Well....
I don't know WHY they have to have it in Brooklyn again.   :P

okay folks i live in NYC and a few things for those who haven't or don't visit often.  This is NOT the NYC of the 1970s; its safe to ride the subway and cheap .. you can go from the Brooklyn Marriott to Times Square in 10 mins on the subway.   My recommendation would be getting a 3-day subway/bus pass then you can ride to your heart's content and visit various other spots in the City. . i.e. catch the A train to Times Square and then walk over 2 Avenues to the old studio. .  or east to Carnegie Deli (near Carnegie Hall).  There are things to do in Brooklyn but it's not as easily apparent to out of town visitors.

Just remember trains bound to the Bronx is North/uptown and those destined for Brooklyn is South/Downtown.

my 2 cents.

Exactly. It really isn't a hardship to get on the subway and ride into Manhattan.  Part of the fun in visiting NYC for the first time for me was getting on the subway and travelling underground - a brand new experience at the time!  For people who are not familiar with New York the concept of getting on the subway and having to travel away from the hotel they are staying at sounds intimidating but it's really not once you see how easy and fast the commute to Manhattan really is.  I rode the subway for almost twenty years and never had anything crime-related happen to me and didn't see it happen to anyone else either.  And, yes, I did have my eyes open the whole time.

On earlier discussion of other locations--- I think people would find that anything they want to do in NYC is probably there in Chicago too.   Unless you're talking about very specific spots you're used to.    SF cons tend to be by O'Hare though, where you get the same problem with not having access to food etc. in the immediate vicinity.     The Hyatt O'Hare was great for the massive Doctor who cons of the 80s and 90s, but you were stuck there.    Almost.   The trains do get you downtown from O'Hare though.

Yeah, I don't see why ppl are buggin!  Brooklyn kicks ASS!  Some very cool entertainment types come from Brooklyn--Lou Gossett Jr., Eli Wallach, Neil Sedaka, Neil Diamond, Al Lewis, Barry Manilow, Richard Lynch, Marissa Tomei not to mention our very own Johnny Karlen--just to name a few.  Besides, the hotel is literally 2 stops from Manhattan and probably only a dozen or less to Times Square!  Do you guys REALLY want to pay $200 or more for a hotel room at a mid-town Fest?  Because that's what it would cost!  That's prime real estate baby!  Why should any hotel charges less than that if they can get that, or more?  Besides, when they used to have these things in Newark it was a longer ride into the city.  Be grateful it's NOT in Tarrytown!   8)

This is NOT the NYC of the 1970s;

Funny you should say that.  I caught part of the movie DEATH WISH, which is set in NYC in the 1970s, and features Charles Bronson as a vigilante who encounters a criminal on every street corner.  I found myself thinking, "Was New York really like that?"  I went to school there in the late 1980s, went out at all hours of the night (love those 24-hour delicatessens!), and never felt that I was ever in any sort of danger.

I'm really looking forward to this year's Fest...

Even though I reside in a comparatively smaller city, The idea of commuting would not necessarily intimidate me since I use public transportation every dang day...as long as I had a map and schedules, I'd be good to go...

We don't live in NYC, but we've been letting our daughter go there by herself since she was 15 years old. She's always been able to find her way all over Manhattan by subway, and never once came home with a horror story.

Just don't try to ask for directions from a person who's running like hell for their commuter train.  [lghy]

I have lived in NY my whole life, first The Bronx and then Queens.  There was a lot of crime back in the 70's and 80's and places like Times Square back then weren't  places youwent alone, especially at night, it was a far cry from the Disney like athmosphere today..  You couldn't take the IRT subway after 10pm, especially to the Bronx.  I was in college in the mid 80's and didn't have a car, which meant I couldnt go anywhere in Manhattan at all for the nightlife.

I remember a situation in Chelsea in the late 80's where a couples phone did not work and the husband went outside to use the pay phone and was shot and killed.  That was the type of threats faced by New Yorkers.
