At least Semi OT: History Channel special on the WTC Marriott
« on: September 12, 2009, 01:04:06 AM »
Watching History Channel while posting, and what should just come on but a special telling the stories of people who were in the WTC Marriott on 9/11.  Since the Fest was held there a few times, including just a few weeks prior to 9/11, I thought this might be of interest to the cousins.

Name of the program is Hotel Ground Zero. In case you want to catch one of the repeats, here's the link to the show page on the History Channel site with the schedule:

I've been meaning to share these images.  Actually, they're digital photos of the same photograph, with the 2nd in closeup.  The full photograph by Joel Meyerowitz appears in Aftermath: World Trade Center Archive.

The west wall of the South Tower is in the first image.  The picture was taken in mid-October once much of the debris field in that area was cleared, and what you're seeing, and may be instantly recognizable to you, is the Marriott Hotel lobby, its picures still on the wall.

For a little perspective, the gathering area for fans before entering the Festival registration area is in the left half of the 2nd image.

That wall of photos in the lobby definitely brings back memories. Two out of my favorite three Fests were held at the Vista hotel, and some great moments were spent in that area...

Oh my gosh, thanks for sharing these, Midnite.  I've never seen any photos before of what became of the hotel, all I knew was that it was destroyed.  Actually, I never would have even recognized it if you hadn't identified it.  I have a lot of memories of the Fests there.

 [ghost_sad]

I was living in Hoboken NJ when 9/11 happened~~right across the river. I walked through the lobby of the Vista less than a week before the tragedy, remembering where KL Scott had her table, where Terrayne Crawford & I had shared a late night drink, etc.
The Vista was a GREAT location for the Fests.
I'll never forget it, or what happened that horrible day.
