when I first got into the series about a decade ago the old sci-fi board was my first exposure to "fandom"...

what an eye opener! i'm surprised I didn't run for the hills from the start. that godforsaken board was the sickest thing I've ever seen. [ghost_shocked]

without getting too much on a soapbox some DS fans need a bit of a history lesson/reality check...

like most New York based soap operas produced at the time the DS cast was largely populated by actors coming from the theatrical world. accordingly then, as now, that group intrinsically included a very large number of gay men. without getting into specific actors it only stands to reason a lot of them ended up on the show.

so the discomfort level that reality creates in some people who claim to "love" all of the DS actors to the point of obsessiveness is certainly perplexing.

on this board perhaps...

but in other forums merely mention "the subject" and one of the schoolyard bullies is sure to read you the riot act.

like the depp/burton film it's one of the peculiarities of this fanbase that causes hysteria to arise.

interesting g...

and I admire your chutzpa for bringing up "the subject". you know, "the thing" we're never, ever supposed to mention in this fandom.

thanks.

incidentally before miss james was ultimately cast bella heathcote was in serious consideration for the role of 'Cinderella'.

I believe it was down to james, heathcote and one other actress(whose name I forget)before james was selected.

my only exposure to lily james is the new and very annoying lady rose on 'downton abbey'.

good luck annie, it's important...

I rarely share personal details here but two weeks ago I was hospitalized because I have diverticulitis that had become abscessed and grossly infected. without trying to sound overly dramatic if it hadn't been caught and had perforated I could have gone into toxic shock and even died. it was very serious and i'm still in the recovery process.

so best wishes.

the 91 series in not my forte but to my recollection the family business was barely referenced if referenced at all...

I certainly don't remember the word "cannery" being tossed around with any frequency. nor any mention of financial difficulties. the main family sort of carried on like inherited wealth socialites.

I really got the impression liz and roger were just part of an establishing "presence" much like they were in the OS's later years more than the types of characters that would actually drive the narrative.

getting more OT if I recall in lara parker's atrocity 'the salem branch' liz(who, again, went unused completely as a character)either rented out Collinwood as a bed and breakfast or else had it shown to tour groups. either way it was as idiotic as the rest of the book.

true...

while simmons' liz went hugely underdeveloped as a character she did lack the note of tragedy bennett brought to the role. nothing we learned about her indicated anything along the lines of what OS liz went through in terms of her husband and her reclusiveness.

I suppose such a backstory could have been established for her in future seasons had they progressed but as it stood it wasn't hinted at and simmons herself didn't lend the character that quality.

while KLS certainly has the pedigree for liz I feel she lacks the requisite imperiousness...

even in her 60's there's still something of the girl-next-door(albeit one with a rather pushy touch of salesmanship)about her.

I wasn't sure if pfieffer had the right note of grandeur to pull off the role but I think she ended up doing admirably. I doubt anyone could ever top bennett when it comes to haughtiness and regality but she put her mark on the character.

with the exception of the bland and hopelessly miscast blair brown in the ill-fated 2004 version it seems almost like a given that liz will be a bit of glamourpuss stunt casting.

bennett. simmons. pfieffer. it's traditionally been a big, slightly past her prime "star" that lends the project a needed touch of class to counterbalance the outrageousness. a rather "grande dame" type of presence.

so any potential projects in the future would likely continue that tradition.

I forgot to post this a few weeks back...

miss heathcote snagged an ultra-coveted invite(no easy feat)to the hyper-exclusive metropolitan museum costume institute gala. this year's theme is "punk:from chaos to couture".

here's bella looking less than chaotic in chanel haute couture and some angelique worthy eye makeup http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2013/05/met-gala-bella-heathcote-in-chanel.html

interesting about HoDS/NoDS...

while widely acknowledged to be flawed(largely blamed on studio editing)those films almost seem regarded as sacrosanct today.

almost anything involving the original cast in fact seems to be almost above reproach. for instance one almost never, ever hears anyone being remotely critical of the audiodramas because of their original cast association.

I wasn't around at the time of the HoDS/NoDS releases but i find it hard to imagine them inspiring the sort of apoplectic, angry, almost hysterical reactions that have surrounded the film.

things have cooled off to some extent but the subject still generates very bitter emotions. I doubt i'll hear the word "travesty" used as often for anything else in my life.

it does have it's supporters. lots at this board to be sure...

but negativity tends to drown out positivity and the malcontents tend to dominate conversations on the subject.

members of the media, film critics and, of course, the fanbase, has had this film in it's crosshairs from the outset. perhaps the depp/burton pairing simply inspires a particular brand of hostility from certain camps who revel in any perceived "failures" on their part.

and certainly the "fans" still haven't piped down a year later. over on the FB boards it's still bemoaned as if it was released yesterday and it's mere mention inevitably leads to the same deluge of complaints that it wasn't "serious".

unfortunately this discontent has woven itself into the very fabric of the DS culture where it remains as a sour, unpleasant undercurrent in the whole thing. it's never going to go away. [easter_rolleyes]
