Title: David Selby Appearance in Cambridge, Massachusetts
Post by: MsCriseyde on August 27, 2008, 01:25:43 AM
David Selby will discuss and sign copies of his novel, Lincoln's Better Angel, on Friday, September 19, at 7:00 pm in Cambridge, MA.

Harvard Square Coop
Level 3
1400 Massachusetts Ave.
Cambridge, MA 02238
617-499-2000

Lincoln's Better Angel
was inspired by an event the author read about in the Washington Post. The story he creates reflects on the personal impact of war and historical perspective.

A walk with President Abraham Lincoln and Vietnam veteran Charles Huggins through Washington, D.C. on a hot Fourth of July night becomes a walk through history. Layering time, grief, humor, and fantasy, Selby presents a story that is both moving and engaging.

Lincoln's Better Angel is published by Mayhaven Publishing.

Thanks, Ms. C!  I had not heard of this, and I really appreciate the heads-up.

To Jennifer, if you see this--you might need to get a ticket, either by going to the store, or by signing up via their website.  I'm in Harvard Square right now and if I find out more, I'll post it to this thread.

The store makes absolutely no mention of tickets or a required sign-up for any of their author events on their web site (http://harvardcoopbooks.bncollege.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/BNCBcalendarEventListView?langId=-1&storeId=52084&catalogId=10001), and this would run counter to all of the information that I've been given by the person who arranged the event.

I've been in contact with the store this morning. As with all of David Selby's scheduled book signings, no tickets are needed. No registration is required. The event is free and open to the public.

(Gothick -- Perhaps you have The Coop confused with the Harvard Book Store, a separate, privately-owned store that does regularly charge to attend off-site author appearances.)

Thanks for clearing that up, Ms. C!  You are absolutely correct--I confused the Coop with the Harvard Bkstore.

I'm very impressed with your knowledge of our local booksellers!  Thanks again!

I was there too and am IN AWE of David Selby's integrity, creativity, energy and passion!  He more or less acted out the entire story of the novel, from start to finish, with observations interspersed about American history, racism, the meaning of liberty, the current political situation, theatre, and other topics beyond my ability to recall.

I bought a copy of the novel to give to a friend whose son is struggling with sophomore English classes, and David revealed that he flunked an English qualifying exam twice!  I responded, "But you wound up getting a Ph. D., didn't you?" and he confirmed that that had indeed been the case.

It was a wonderful, memorable evening with a true gentleman.

Interesting that the video interview has apparently been rediscovered and people are tweeting about it:
