Title: Westminster Dog Show at Lyndhurst
Post by: patrickm on June 11, 2021, 12:37:33 PM
For those who might be curious, The Westminster Dog Show will be held this Saturday outdoors at Lyndhurst Mansion. It will be televised pretty much all day on various Fox channels. The Best of Breeds will be on FS-2 at 1pm, the Agility Competition will be on Fox at 5pm, and the actual competition will begin with the pre show starting at 7:30pm on FS-1. Pretty cool!

There will also be more coverage.. The rest of Best of Breeds will be on Sunday at 1:30 pm on FS -1 and the rest of Best in Groups and the Best in Show will be on Fox starting at 7pm. They also have live streaming on now at https://westminsterkennelclub.org. I saw they had small dogs running an obstacle course inside a tent on the Lyndhurst lawn.

My first thought were dogs that howled whenever Barnabas was pissed or in the vicinity.  [easter_grin]

[pointing-up]  It's interesting that the daytime show used the sounds of dogs howling extensively whenever vampire characters were around/plotting, but unless I'm mistaken the sound was only used leading up to Daphne's attack in hoDS. I don't think we ever heard them when Carolyn was about...

And thanks for the heads up, patrick...

Can that mysterious glow nearing the greenhouse be Angelique out for a stroll?

And all of this is only halfway through yesterday's broadcast. There is more to come. And it should be interesting to see if tonight's broadcast recycles the same footage or if there will be anything new...

I was pleasantly surprised how much time was spent discussing Lyndhurst, the Gould family and Sleepy Hollow. Plus all the various cut aways before commercials of the grounds. I saw quick shots of the greenhouse and rose cottage.  It was cool seeing the dogs getting judged and hauling ass on their obstacle course  knowing we've walked those grounds many times. Also, I believe this was the first time I had seen Lyndhurst lit up after dark. It looked stunning!  Great captures MB.

Yes, it was quite pleasantly surprising how much each show on Fox featured exteriors from all sorts of angles as well as interiors of some of the rooms. And unless it turns out to be a huge file, I hope to share a video of the package they put together for Sunday's show on the background of Lyndhurst. Not that most of us don't already know what they went into, but it's still worth sharing.

Indeed it did - and you can bet that captures of those sequences will be showing up here sooner or later...

The dog show did rather well - though I suspect most people mainly tuned in to see the dogs rather than the glimpses of Lyndhurst, like I and patrickm and others here may have.  [easter_cheesy]

Fast Overnights:

"FOX | Westminster Kennel Dog Show coverage averaged 2.2 mil and a 0.3 (compared to The Moodys‘ most recent 550K/0.2, just saying)."

I got curious and looked up our old DS hotel in Tarrytown. It was most of the times we were there the Tarrytown Hilton, then became the Doubletree ... now it is called the Sleepy Hollow Hotel and Conference Center. I couldn't help but wonder after all the years of dealing with a hotel full of Dark Shadow people how they felt being taken over by Westminster dogs and dog owners ..Lol. Really miss those fun times ..but wouldn't be the same with the diner across the street torn down to make room for the car dealer.   [cryg]

Interesting development about the change in the status of the hotel. If it's no longer part of a major chain, with perks for organizations that book conventions, I wonder if that will take them out of the running for any future DS events. Should there be any.

I never ate at that diner - I ate at two of the restaurants at the hotel. They were a bit expensive, but the food was good. Though when it comes to one of them, the place was so dark that it was practically like those restaurants where you eat in pitch blackness. Well, it really wasn't quite that dark, but it was REALLY dark, so dark that you could barely see your dining companion(s) or even your food!  [easter_rolleyes]

A capture of the back and side of the house from footage that wasn't shown in the section from which I took the captures in Reply #15:

And these are the last two instances in which Lyndhurst was used as part of Saturday's broadcast. Tomorrow I'll try to start getting captures from Sunday's broadcast - but considering it took me two days to get captures from Saturday's two hour broadcast, I suspect it's going to take several days to get captures from Sunday's over four hour broadcast...

The El Dorado diner was certainly convenient, especially for those who didn't have access to a car. But I found the food to be overpriced and okay. Just okay. There were better and less expensive options available in Tarrytown proper.

What was nice about the diner was that it was open 24 hrs, so you wouldn't miss out on any fest activities. Plus it had a huge menu. I considered the hotel dining options to be far more overpriced - only ate there for the banquet. I too did notice how dark it was MB. Course we always did manage to commandeer the bar area after closing for a hang out area. LOL.

Found an article describing how bad things have been for the Tarrytown hotels during covid .

https://westchestermagazine.com/life-style/business/covid-hotel-industry/

It describes how messy things got between Hilton and Doubletree with lawsuits on both sides. Probably explains the recent  hotel name change.

There's definitely a bit of irony in seeing so many dogs in and around the house when practicaly all the scenes featuring Gerard's "vicious" dogs (they do make a cameo at the outset of the scene in which Quentin goes to the stable (http://www.dsboards.com/images/stable.jpg) - though they&re certainly not vicious) ended up on the NoDS cutting room floor supposedly because the dogs they hired were anything but vicious...

And there were some instances where I didn't include some of the shots in the montage because either all that was shown of the grounds were trees in the backgrounds of the dogs/models or they were posing in a fairly insignificant part of the house, like on the terrace with only the floor or a post showing...

And hmmm - could Angelique be strolling the back grounds here:

Maybe as a tribute to the NoDS promotional merchandizing she decided to appear as her Angelique figure (http://www.dsboards.com/images/AngeliqueFigure.jpg).

Before I move on to begin getting the next batch of captures there something that I forgot to point out yesterday.

The footage that this capture -

- was taken from is correct. However, the footage that this capture -

- was taken from was flipped, just like the Gallery footage that followed it in the montage was.

It'll be interesting to see it a correct version of the flipped footage is used anywhere in what's upcoming on Sunday's broadcast, like the correct version of the Gallery footage had been used on Saturday's broadcast...

(The first floor view of the stairwell is conveniently on view in NoDS here (http://www.dsboards.com/images/nods_stairwell.jpg). (And if you wonder why I picked a capture from the VHS version of NoDS rather than the DVD/Blu-ray version, well, the VHS version shows more of the frame, and thus, more of the stairwell.  [easter_wink]))

The next batch (and as with yesterday's captures, some may seem similar to what's already been posted but they're actually taken from footage that wasn't used earlier):

(Click here (http://www.dsboards.com/images/West_Lynd_2_45.jpg) for a 1814X1020 version)

And it wasn't a case that I decided how much footage should pass before selecting another capture of the couple and their dog entering the house - the sequence actually skipped footage to jump ahead so I went along with how it did...

It's hard to believe but everything that I've posted yesterday and today only brings us up through the first 15 minutes of Sunday's show.

And one thing I found particularly amusing while I was going through today's footage was that one of the male hosts referred to the event as a "Happening" - shades of the party in the 2012 DS!!  [easter_cheesy]

It's so interesting to see Lyndhurst with ivy on its walls. Until seeing the vintage footage used in this segment I'm positive I'd never seen footage or even stills of Lyndhurst with ivy. It's like the days when Seaview Terrace had ivy - and as anyone who visited there in the late-'70s knows, the ivy had really taken hold on the house!  [easter_wink])

And to explain all that has recently been posted and then some is the video I was hoping to post that gets into a lot of Lyndhurst's history:

It's probably not surprising that the video package completely ignores that after William Paulding had The Knoll built (the version of the house seen in the 4th capture in Reply #54) in 1838 it was widely joked about as "Paulding's Folly." I don't actually remember why, but thankfully after George Merritt bought the house and he had the original architect, Alexander Jackson Davis, build the addition, no one was laughing anymore.

A brief glimpse of this next sequwnce appeared in the opening montage after the last capture in Reply #32 (the pug), but again it was a case that there wasn't really s way to place where on the grounds it took place, so I skipped it. But Sunday's broadcast gives it the full treatment here:

It's so interesting to see Lyndhurst with ivy on its walls. Until seeing the vintage footage used in this segment I'm positive I'd never seen footage or even stills of Lyndhurst with ivy.

It's very dangerous to say you're positive about anything because something may just happen to prove you wrong. And such is the case with that statement above because this morning I rediscovered that I had seen a photo of Lyndhurst with ivy.  [easter_embarassed]  After not having opened it in decades, I dug out a 1970 bound volume I have of American Heritage Magazine because it has a lengthy article about Lyndhurst and the bitter legal fights the National Trust for Historic Preservation went through to take possession of Lyndhurst (and if you don't know that story, whoa, you may be quite surprised). And lo and behold, what did I discover but this photo:

But in my defense, as I said, I haven't looked at the article in decades, so if I forgot one photo that I haven't seen in decades, can that really be held against me?  [easter_wink]

The article is The Realms of Gould, and I discovered that the text of the article has been posted online here (https://www.americanheritage.com/realms-gould#3). It's a long but absolutely fascinating read. Sadly the site didn't include the sumptuous photos of Lyndhurst that were originally published with the article, but it's still worth checking out, especially if you'd like to read about a bitter legal fight, the details of which you probably don't hear about when you visit Lyndhurst.

Quote
It's like the days when Seaview Terrace had ivy

I didn't put together until this morning that Lyndhurst has more in common with Seaview Terrace than just once being covered with ivy - both houses were created by expanding already existing houses. Lyndhurst by expanding The Knoll - and Seaview Terrace by expanding a house that was called Sea View. It's not like I didn't know that both expansions had taken place, but for some reason it wasn't until today that I realized the expansions are something both houses have in common. On the other hand, Greystone, the only other house to this point to "play" Collinwood, was built from the start as huge as it is, and the additions that were made to the model of the house for the '91 Series don't really count.  [ghost_nowink]

Things definitely slowed way down in the second 30 minutes of Sunday's broadcast as they concentrated on the dogs more than anything else. Imagine.  [easter_wink]  The only thing to feature Lyndhurst was this bumper:

(Click here (http://www.dsboards.com/images/West_Lynd_2_150.jpg) for a 1814X1020 version)

There was a second bumper, but it focused on the train running along the tracks near the river. Shocking!  [easter_shocked]  [easter_cheesy]

So it looks like this will be all for today because I'm going out in a couple of hours and I'll be out until much later tonight. We'll see what tomorrow brings in the third 30 minutes...

The only bumper at all in the third 30 minutes was this first one to feature Lyndhurst lit up at night:

At the beginning of the fourth 30 minutes of Sunday's broadcast they repeated what initially appeared to be the same bumper that I'd covered in Reply #61 through Reply #65. However, upon closer inspection there were two additional shots at the beginning of it (and again, the following captures may seem the same as what's already been posted but they're actually taken from footage that was not previously shown):

(Click here (http://www.dsboards.com/images/West_Lynd_2_156.jpg) for a 1814X1020 version)

Why the two shots were dropped is anyone's guess, especially when including them only added a second to the bumper's time. But obviously they had their reason(s)...

If it wasn't for the fact that I have software that can break down video to its individual frames, I never would have notice Lyndhurst reflected (albeit a bit distorted) in the top left of these trophies because I never would have been able to spot it with the naked eye when it goes by so fast -

- though it's much easier to spot in the top capture/trophy.

And these are the last things dealing with Lyndhurst in the fifth 30 minutes...

But in all seriousness, who knows what those people were actually doing? Maybe we'll find out. Maybe not...

You posted a lot of great shots MB. Wonder if Lyndhurst could put them in a booklet and sell them in their gift shop?

[pointing-up]  And there's more to come because I'm already working on something else from the sixth 30 minutes. Plus there's more left of the sixth as well as a seventh, eighth and even a ninth 30 minutes to go to possibly find even more things. We shall see...

The next thing to come up in the sixth 30 minutes was the exact same montage that I covered in Reply #43 through Reply #45 (the couple and their dog entering the house). However that wasn't the last thing to come up in the sixth. There is another new thing to cover but it might be a while before I get to process it because I have some other things to do beforehand...

It's certainly apparent that they took full advantage of drone technology. And to think back in the "Dark Ages of Technology" when DC directed NoDS he had to use crane shots or dangerously position the camera on the roof of the house when he filmed angles around the top of the tower (http://www.dsboards.com/images/tower.jpg)...

And this is the last of the sixth 30 minutes...

The only thing involving Lyndhurst in the seventh 30 minutes of Sunday's broadcast was the arrival of Best In Show judge Mrs. Patricia Craige Trotter:

I wonder if those people who were milling around earlier were getting ready to shoot the video of her arrival?

The first thing to come up in the eighth 30 minutes was a shorter montage similar to the one that kicked off Sunday's broadcast and was covered in Repy #30 through Reply #35. I'll call that first one "A Champion Awaits" because that's how the voiceover for it ended - I'll this upcoming second on "Best in Show" because that's how its voiceover ends (and again, some captures may seem similar to what's already been posted but they're actually taken from footage that was not previously shown or in the case of one, the footage was flipped but it was shown correctly this time - that all being said, though, there will be one capture reposted for this simply because the exact same footage was used but I want to showcase the montage in full when it comes to what was used of Lyndhurst):

(Click here (http://www.dsboards.com/images/West_Lynd_2_234.jpg) for a 1814X1020 version)

(This one is the repost.)

(Click here (http://www.dsboards.com/images/West_Lynd_2_235.jpg) for a 1814X1020 version)
(Something similar to this one was skipped in the first montage because it was one of those where, as I said, "all that was shown of the grounds were trees in the backgrounds of the dogs/models.")

And as I did with the first montage, I'm breaking the captures for this one into two sets of postings, so this is all for now. And there's more to look forward in the next set of posts because there are more completely new ones in that batch, including the return of the pug - and he has a guest...

I forgot to mention yesterday that there were two shots that I skipped from the above montage. One was a close-up of the dog in the first capture from Reply #31. And the other was something similar to what I'd already skipped previously when I posted captures from the sequence showcased in Reply #11. Both show slightly different versions of the dog as the couple's wine glasses get toasted. The house was barely seen in the shots and what was seen was very darkly shaded, so that's why it was skipped then as well as now.

Also, it's interesting that this time around they added a new shot of Lyndhurst to the beginning, but unlike the previous montage, there aren't any shots of only the house afterward...
Title: Re: Westminster Dog Show at Lyndhurst

And immediately following the above montage came this bumper featuring Lyndhurst on the left side -

(Click here (http://www.dsboards.com/images/West_Lynd_2_246.jpg) for a 1814X1020 version)

- and as can be better seen in the following capture, the greenhouse -

(Click here (http://www.dsboards.com/images/West_Lynd_2_247.jpg) for a 1814X1020 version)

- on the right...

And this is also the last of what was shown of Lyndhurst in the eight 30 minutes - the rest of the time was focused on judging the best in show and presenting that honor. I guess they thought that was more important. Misguided as far as Lyndhurst fans go.  [easter_wink]  But hey, what can you do?  [easter_cheesy]  But there is still more to come in the next section...

As much as I've enjoyed getting captures from the event, at times I thought this point would never come because as much as I knew it would take more than a day or two to go though both the Saturday and Sunday broadcasts, I never thought it would take as long as it has. Although, that is a good thing because look at all the Lyndhurst stuff they featured. But we have finally reached the last batch of postings. And what's coming up is from the closing montage featured at the end of the ninth segment of Sunday's broadcast. I won't refer to it as the ninth 30 minutes because it only lasted 11 minutes - though it was 11 minutes of overtime, so Fox was probably very happy that it ran only 11 minutes over. (And again, some captures may seem similar to what's already been posted but they're actually either taken from footage that was not previously shown or in the case of the first two captures, footage that didn't have any banners running over it (see Reply #17)):

I like the capture of the aerial shot with the large tent and the breed judging tent next to it. I had an idea where they where but it confirms they were across from the greenhouse. Cool. I wonder how many people read our Dark Shadow club commemorative bricks we have in the courtyard while taking the dogs for walks. I also chuckled over the shot of the dog sitting on the bench in front of the mansion. I believe it's the same bench Roger Davis stood on when he was giving us a talk about the property so we could hear him better ... and him being chastised by a Lyndhurst volunteer for doing so. LOL.
