Title: PRIMARY PROP
Post by: VAM on April 17, 2002, 07:39:40 PM
There were so many props used during the run of the Series. The range was from a deck of Tarot cards to a music box. Everyone came away with a favorite. What is yours and why?

1) Barnabas' Ring....I HAD one of those in the 60's....what are they going for on E-Bay?

2)Willie Loomis' Apron....where do you think Home Depot got the design?  ;D

3) The Bat-on-a-Stick....just for being the cheeziest prop on the show, IMHO. [lghy]

Raineypark, who thinks this is a great question, VAM!!

I would have to say the music box with Josette's theme!
There are so many to think of but that is the one i
I think of the most when i remember the show!

My favorite was always Josette's music box!

Another favorite was Quentin's old gramophone or victrola.

[wavey] These are my top three...

1.  The  MUSIC BOXby far!  My most wonderful DS revisited moment was the day the little replica (¢â‚¬Ëœ90's version unfortunately NOT the original ¢â‚¬Ëœ60's one) arrived in the mail!  For me it was the most beautiful and romantic symbol on DS and summed up how I related to the entire show.

2. After that I had to buy the replica of BARNABAS' ONYX RINGto go with the music box of course.  This ring was so prominent all through the show that it became a kind of icon.  Also, I thought the way Barn wore it on his forefinger was just cool.

3.  If it didn't cost a fortune I'd also love to have the WOLF'S HEAD CANE aka the Willie Beater.  Not that I enjoyed seeing Willie get the daylights knocked out of him - it's just that it's such a beautiful piece of work to begin with.  As to the replica I've seen advertised on the Internet well, I just can't go the $400 (probably more by now) so this will have to remain a pipe dream.  I've always thought the silver handle would be a nice DS inspired bracelet though it might cost even more to make that than it would to buy the cane. [nuts]

I have to agree with you all, Josette's Music Box is right up there among the favorites, along with Barnabas' ring. I have both, sitting next to some rocks I collected from my trip to Newport RI, at "Widow's Hill."

I'd love to get my hands on Barnabas' cane too, to hang on my wall. Also, I love some of the wall sconces and chambersticks that are in The Old House, and would love to have some of them in my own house!  ;D

Interesting topic.  Unlike many fans, I've never felt the impulse to own Josette's music box, Barnabas' ring or his cane, though the latter is VERY cool and magickal.

What I did crave and demanded until my own set was given to me were Magda's tarot cards (I didn't realize that they were originally owned by the Countess du Pres until many years after the run of the original broadcast).  I went to the library, checked out Eden Gray's tarot books, and made my own traced copies of the major arcana cards until I got my own deck as a Christmas present in 1970.  The deck I was given was the "IJJ" Swiss one (so called because of the Jupiter and Juno cards that are said to be unique to this deck), which was the same one used by Magda.  Back in the Sixties, it was still very difficult to find tarot cards.  I really wanted a Pamela Colman Smith (aka "Rider Waite") deck because I loved the images so much, but had to wait until just a few years ago when I finally bought one for myself.

Other props I loved on the show were the painted Egyptian-looking coffer that held Count Petofi's hand (and was often glimpsed on an end table in the upstairs corridor in the present-day episodes), the Naga box, Laura's scarab, and, of course ... THE AFGHAN!!!

Does Cassandra Collins' wig collection count as a prop?  That would be on my list, too.

I've seen that on eBay too...check w/ Craig Hamrick, I think he was the seller?  ?!?  He might know where you can get it.

and, of course ... THE AFGHAN!!!

I just ran across the almost *identical* afghan my great grandmother knitted, all rumpled up in a dusty corner of my mom's garage last weekend! I couldn't believe what a find that was!  :o   It's getting some TLC at the moment, soaking in Woolite  ;) , hopefully I will be able to resurrect it!

My favorite prop is Josette's Musicbox. I remember seeing the episode from 1795 where Angelique found it. That was the first time I had heard it. I kept rewinding the tape just to listen to it. It really symbolized to me the love between Josette and Barnabas. Whenever I hear it, it reminds me of Josette because of the way she was on the show. So far on the small screen I've seen it once more in #425 and in "House of Dark Shadows". I usually listen to it everyday on my computer. LOL I guess that sums up why I love the musicbox.

I would have to join in with the crowd and say the one I love best is Josette's music box.  Along with Jennifer I think I developed a love of these from watching DS.  In fact I have several music boxes.  No replica's though.  There is something so romantic about a music box.

Next I would pick the gramma phone.  I have a weekness also for antigues.

Barn's ring and cane

I have a ring I bought as a child that was very much like the one Aristede wore in the l897 story line.  It is still in my box of treasures.

Dear Fellow Dark Shadows Fans,

I would have to say that my two favorite Dark Shadows props are: Number One -  the stogie which Bob Rooney has clenched in his teeth for seemingly the entire the nearly five-year-run of the show, and Number Two - Bob Rooney's stylish flannel shirts, which he even wore during the dog days of summer (Bob's royal stewart flannel shirt is my personal favorite).

Sincerely,

Bob the Bartender, who says the heck with the Big Game, bring on the Mega-Millions Game!!!

Where do I begin? As a child I longed for a ring like Barnabas' but I could never find one. The closest I ever got was one of those mood rings. The stone turned black after awhile.

Would also love to have a replica of Josette's music box but they are way too pricey for me.

David's crystal ball is pretty cool. I have a small one, not that big.

Would love to have one of the portraits used in the show, such as Barnabas' portrait, Angelique's or Josette's. Even one of the unidentified portraits on the walls of Collinwood, or the portrait Vicki found of Betty Hanscomb.

Interesting story - my mother bought a set of Tarot cards in the 70's and learned how to do readings with them. However, every time she read the cards for someone they always predicted the death of someone close to them - and each time it came true! After about the 3rd time that happened she put the cards away and never took them out again.

I have a few favorite props as follows:

watch fob belonging to Gerard Stiles (love to have it for my watch collection)

Sam Evan's paint brushes and palatte

Petofi's ring and I Ching wands

Angelique's locket from NODS

and Josette's Music Box (not the MPI version)

I think they count as living entities, lol, especially the first one which I believe I described rather accurately in a fanfic as "that ratnest of a wig."

I'll skip the afghan, tacky portraits, music box, the all purpose Naga box, etc.

I wouldn't mind some of the furniture, lamps, or any of Joan Bennett's jewelry.

I loved Julia's cigarette holder and her gloves. . .pull them on, pull them off, express your angst honey!  I don't really thinkof Quentin's gramaphone as a prop. .as you don't touch it, hold it and such as an actor does some of the other things .. . the wolfhead cane is WAAAAY up there too. . where would Barney be with out it?? What would he have beat Willie with, his hands?? eeeeeekkkkkk :o

I never got that.  When Amanda had her head shots prominently displayed throughout her hotel suite, I thought it was pretty vain, but I figured actor=vain, although it was still on the odd side (who travels around with framed photographs of themselves?).

But here's Maggie, small town girl and she has a picture of herself, framed and on her dresser???

My ex-roommate had more pictures of herself in her room that flakes of dust. . .Also, actors do seem to have lots of photos and portraits of themselves around. . how many Barbara Walters interviews have we seen where the "actor" sits before some portrait of themself. .i can count at least 5. . .even Goldie Hawn with I think wouldn't have such a swelled head. . .??

The day I got my very own (sadly, plastic), Josette's music box in the mail in 1970 was a happy day for me!  While I preferred the original song, I liked the second, too, and was delighted to have that tune where I could play it whenever I wanted.

I found my own Barnabas' ring in the defunct Time Square Stores.  When I looked into a case in the jewelry department, I was so excited, I could barely breathe!  I asked the salesperson to let me see it, and she handed it over.  I slipped it onto my forefinger (perfect fit, didn't even need to use the adjustment) reverently and bought it then and there.  It looks exactly like the ring Barnabas wears, and yes, I still have it!

Never got myself a Willie beater, but I do think of that, and Barnabas' cloak, as DS' most familiar props.

Petofi's hand box, which showed up all over Collinwood, LOL, as well as that crazy afghan.  I had a similar one, but it fell apart a few years ago..

Julia's medallion!  She hypnotized so well and often with that blasted thing.  "Find the center of the light!"

Love, Robin

the picture of KLS was pretty weird! I would not want a picture of myself on my dresser ,not because i'm ugly or anything :o), i just think it is a bit stange! Is there a story behind that anyone?

My favorites were Quentin's grammophone, and the gorgeous jewelry Joan Bennett wore...

Also the piano...althought it's a shame they didn't have someone play it more often.

Could I just say that QUentin himself was my favorite prop? LOL ;)

The portrait of Angelique from 1970PT was pretty cool too.

Definitely Josette's music box, which I consider DS' most recognizable prop, but Barnabas' ring, cane (aka Willie-beater) and cape were biggies, the traveling afghan, Petofi's hand box, decks of tarot cards,  candles, used in so many storylines.  The list is endless.

I bought Josette's music box back in 1970 and was thrilled to have it (still do)!  I purchased a Barnabas ring from Time Square Stores, and own it still.

Let me explain that my memory of events from the original run has never been very good, and I'm constantly impressed by the recall of the rest of you that watched back then.  That having been said, the prop that I remembered the most (argh!) was the grandfather clock in the foyer.  But please don't ask me why it would stick out in my mind more than, say, Josette's music box or that beautiful gramophone.

The first rendition of the Barnabas painting in the foyer was stolen so they had to create another; that one showed up in someone's possession and it was given to the DS Festival, or loaned to them, for display.  I might have that wrong.   I don't know what happened to the portrait  Sam Evans did.

The Barnabas cane was lost several times during the series, but JF has one that he used to have shown at the festivals years ago.  He threw out the ring and cape after the series ended.

Julia's hypodermic -- just love how she would hold it so casually, like a lit cigarette.

The Collins Family History -- simply the wrong book for Vicki to be caught holding in 1795.

The buzzer button in Liz Stoddard's coffin -- a fine choice, conveniently located near her hand, that demonstrated amazing foresight on her part.

Yeah, the KLS publicity photo on Maggie's dresser is a classic -- it is so un-Maggie, what a stitch!

Julia's gloves -- yes, Julia99, loved that put-'em-on, take-'em-off ritual.  I wonder whether those gloves (and the accompanying trademark ritual) might even have been Grayson's idea.  It certainly added to her unique character.

The "Shadow" -- although I don't know where they keep it now.  Does it fade with age?

Julia's notebook -- when she spotted that little red plastic-bound number with the dimestore lock on sale at Woolworth's, she must have thought, "Ah, yes!  The perfect volume for recording my priceless notes on a scientific breakthrough ... along with my secret thoughts about Davey Jones, Bobby Sherman, and Tom Jennings!"
