Post by: MsCriseyde on August 26, 2007, 06:26:41 PM
As mentioned elsewhere, David Selby's new HBO series, Tell Me You Love Me will air on Sundays at 9:00 pm ET beginning September 9. Prior to that, HBO will air Making Tell Me You Love Me on Tuesday, September 4, at 10:45 pm ET.

Some other preview/on-set featurettes will be available through HBO On Demand as the premiere date approaches.

A tease and the "Invitation to the Set" are available on the HBO web page for the series. (http://www.hbo.com/tellme)

Ok I just watched it on HBO on demand
Jane Alexander was ....yeah I don't know how to say it here... lets just say David looked like he enjoyed it.
He was in a couple of scenes, but for just a few seconds and a couple of words

The rest of the show was like peeping in the neighbor’s bedroom window. I am not a Prude but I fast forward through the sex scenes.

How interesting that the above article states:  But by the end of the first hour of "Tell Me," I found myself caring deeply about what was happening to the couples and whether, in the end, they would find some joy of sex and emotional satisfaction. And whether I care about the characters is always my bottom line as to whether a series succeeds  because I posted this yesterday:
If not for Selby ... I wouldn't bother with it anymore.  I don't care about these couples...
:-

BTW, there's a zinger by MsCriseyde in that same topic on the Calendar '07 I board.  :D

This LA Times reviewer (Sept. 7) goes so far as to call most of the characters "so absurdly unlikable."  But she has high praise for Alexander and Selby, two pros who provide "the most interesting and graceful storyline."

I love this review!  Check it out here:
The dark side of 'Love,' HBO's 'Tell Me You Love Me' is too sour to bear. (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/la-et-tellme7sep07,1,7611568.story?ctrack=1&cset=true)

Today's Baltimore Sun includes a review of the series along with a video version of the review with clips, including one with David Selby. (The text of the article differs from the commentary in the video clip.)

Isn't it unusual that reviews of an entire series are appearing in print before most of the public has had a chance to see a single episode?  I don't recall seeing anything like this before (all 10 eps were screened for the press, which the last 2 reviewers have made abundantly clear).  I feel like there are no surprises left in store for me.   :-

From what I gather, it's not unusual for HBO, but then their seasons are much shorter than the regular networks, so the situation is a bit different. Some television critics were given access to the complete ten-episode package on DVD. What was shown at the TV Critics Association meeting, from what I understand, was a highlight reel. Most, but not all, of the advance "reviews" are based on an actual screening of the full series.

Some of them, I am sad to say, are little more than thinly veiled reworkings of HBO's press release for the series with a few personal expressions of shock and disbelief tossed in. Many of the reviews would make fabulous material for a composition or critical reading instructor trying to demonstrate the concept of unstated assumptions. Some of the reviews reveal much more about the reviewer's attitudes toward issues like age, sex, and gender than they do about the series.

From what I've read, quite sadly, I would have to agree.  [sad3]  But thankfully that is not the case with all reviewers. TV Guide's Matt Roush hasn't published his review yet, but if the preview he provided in his Ask Matt column (Tell Me You Love Me's Sexy Debut... (http://www.tvguide.com/Ask-Matt/070907)) this past Friday is any indication, it will be favorable and appreciative of the issues the series is highlighting. Here are a few excerpts from his remarks:

The magazine review goes out next week, but this gives me an opportunity to weigh in a few days early, and I'm happy to, because I think Tell Me You Love Me signals HBO getting back on track after John from Cincinnati (which I did feel was dull and pretentious) with a powerful, demanding and at times excruciatingly painful drama about authentic characters in extreme emotional crises. I found myself thinking of the great Herskovitz-Zwick shows, because I was often both deeply moved and deeply exasperated by some of the characters

The bedroom scenes are about as raw and graphic as anything HBO has produced outside the Real Sex franchise. But this is anti-porn, sex intentionally deglamorized. This is not a show where people have sex to candlelight. If anything, you may wish they'd turn the lights out more often. But the most affecting couple, played beautifully by Tim DeKay and Ally Walker in performances worthy to be mentioned in the same breath as Once and Again, are long-marrieds who haven't had sex in a year, though they love each other deeply, and their desire to reconnect while fearing becoming one of those "couples with problems" is pretty searing stuff.

I expect Tell Me You Love Me to be polarizing, but it gets richer as it goes on (I've seen all 10 hours)

Now that the first episode has aired, HBO has fleshed out their web site a bit more. They're doing a text/video feedback section ("Tell Us About Tell Me You Love Me") where couples can discuss their responses to the show, and they've got five couples that they're "following" as they watch the series. They were asked which couple on the series they related most to, and one couple has selected May and Arthur (Jane Alexander and David Selby).

Selby has more dialogue in ep #3 and does a fine acting job as always.

And, um, can you say, "Girl in Blue?"

Ya know, I was becoming a bit frustrated b/c they weren't showing enough of David Selby, but I decided to hang in there and be patient.......

AND IT PAID OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   YEEHAH!  [naughty] [vryevl]

I haven't seen # 3 yet, but in the first two, when he WAS in a scene, it seemed they hardly showed him.  It would mostly be from the back or side, or a long shot.  One could hardly see him!!

Selby just signed on to do a guest appearance on Cold Case, so you'll have another opportunity to see him in something a bit more conventional before the television season is out.  ;)

Great! Cold Case is one of my favorite shows, so I'll definitely be looking forward to Selby on that.

I wonder if his character will be a part of the backstory? If so, it will be interesting to see who they get to play him in flashbacks...

Jane Alexander did an approximately 15-minute interview with Leonard Lopate on WNYC New York public radio yesterday. Among other topics, she discusses working with David Selby on Tell Me You Love Me. You can listen to or download the complete interview here (http://www.wnyc.org/shows/lopate/episodes/2007/10/02/segments/86435).

I saw where the American Film Institute lists Tell Me You Love Me as one of their 10 best TV shows of the year. Hmmm - one wonders what the naysayers will think of that?  [santa_wink]
