I'm in Tracy, just a few hours up the road from Madera. I love Fresno! (Bet you never heard that much during your tenure in the area, eh?)

True, everyone loves to diss Fresno.  But I must admit to a certain nostalgia when I think of the place.  I'm a true "valley girl."  What I miss most is being only one hour from Yosemite, and being able to take all those day trips there. I've been thrugh Tracy, but not spent any time there unfortunately.

"Enemies become allies quicker than friends," says Barnabas. This is an interesting statement considering the circumstances. How do you interpret this quote?

I think Barnabas is also remembering his own experience.  In 1967 his greatest enemy Julia became his greatest ally.

Northern California, about 75 miles (give or take) east of San Francisco, in the San Joaquin Valley, salad bowl of the world!

What city in the San Joaquin Valley? I'm originally from Madera, 20 miles north of Fresno, and lived in Fresno, too, before moving to the LA area.

I'm so glad that you were able to find the tribute, Midnite. Thanks for making it available for all to see. It is very beautiful and heartfelt. I was very pleased to see it when I opened my LA Times this morning.

I have heard of Variety. Is that like the National Inquirer?

Variety is a trade paper for the entertainment industry. There is Variety, a weekly, published in NY and covering theater, movies, tv, etc. There is also Daily Variety, which is published in LA and focuses on the LA entertainment industry. I believe that they are owned and published by the same people, so there is some duplicate info.  Both papers include obituaries of people who have worked in the Industry. The obits I checked were published in the NY Variety.  There is a website, Variety.com, but it is not a free site and I doubt that their online archives go back far enough to get any further info from them.

I've been out of touch with the Board the last few days and only saw these posts today. Since I work at a large library which has Variety obits compiled in book form, I checked the index to see if they had an obit for Craig Slocum. Sadly, they did not. However, they did have a listing under Slocum, Craig (mother of).

All it said was that the mother of actor Craig Slocum died on June 20, 1965. She was survived by her husband, son and daughter. It didn't even give her first name!  I believe it also stated that she was 60 years old.

I think that compared to some other things he could want to do that ballooning is pretty safe.  I'd say keep quiet and let him go for it and be glad that he doesn't want to skydive from an airplane or bungi jump from a bridge.  [crazd]

and the Number One sign you are in Collinsport is:

 1.  A red-headed woman approaches you and says.."Let me give you a sedative."

These are all great, but obviously this is my favorite. :)

It is all in the make-up...Don't you agree?

Absolutely. Those dang false eyelashes were so thick it was hard to even see what color eyes a person had, let alone the size of the eye. Less is better in my opinion.

And Grayson was very funny in this movie. I loved that ever-present glass of booze in her hand in every scene.

Current Talk '02 II / Re: Julia and the countess?
« on: September 27, 2002, 07:31:48 PM »
No, she didn't have an accent in 1795. As to mannerisms and voice, she didn't remind me of Julia at all, but I'll watch it again sometime, paying close attention to the mannerisms.

In the 1991 version, Barbara Steele did play the Countess with an accent.

I remember reading somewhere (maybe the Sam Hall interview with Gross) that Grayson wanted to give Natalie an accent, but the other actors playing characters from Martinique weren't able to do it, and it would have seemed strange if only Natalie spoke with an accent. When it came to playing Magda though, Grayson and Thayer worked together on their gypsy accents so that they would sound alike.
