So what happened with the Fest this year. I was unable to attend and heard it was going to be different from a regular convention. What were the changes?

The Fest was a blast wasn't it? Jonathan was amazingly spry, I hope I am as well if I reach that age! He was wonderfully charming and I think moved by the love he felt from the audience. I think that was apparent during his presentation of his favorite scenes from the show (which of course included the little duel of words between he and Burke Devlin at the Blue Whale, fantastic scene!) Anyway he remarked that the feeling he got when watching the show with the audience who adored it was completely different from the feeling he got when watching it by himself.

At one point (I believe it was at the banquet) Kathryn Leigh Scott was up on stage giving Jonathan wonderful praise. When she was done he came up on stage as well and when she went to hug him he went in for a bite on the neck. The whole place erupted! It was a riot!

The banquet... my GOD! There were WAY too many people there. Ballroom capacity was 317 according to a plaque on the wall. There were 850 people and tables crammed inside. There was barely any room to move between the tables. I am horrified by the thought of what would have happened had a fire broken out. People would probably have been killed. I think the banquet should have been handled differently. Not to mention the fact that as we lined up for dinner, all 850 of us, we were kept waiting outside in line for over an hour and a half before we were permitted inside.

I had wanted to see Jonathan up close and personal, but the poor man was exhausted by the end of the night (our night anyway, we hightailed it out of there around 11:00) and he had gotten through less than half the tables waiting to have their autographed pictures personalized. He felt bad about it and offered to stay tomorrow morning in the lobby for the signing. There were a few groans from the audience at this announcement which I felt were totally ungracious. I didn't go back in the morning as I would have felt terrible about delaying him further from starting his long drive back to Canada.

Otherwise though we had a total blast this weekend and I hope everyone who attended did as well. A HUGE and most sincere thank you to Midnite for introducing herself, and introducing me to both AngeliqueWins and mscbryk! I should have said it to you in person Midnite, but thanks so much for all your hard work on the forums! It was a pleasure to meet all 3 of you!  :-*

PS - If you're ever in the area go and check out the Old Dutch Burying ground. I had no idea (we had just stopped there to pass the afternoon) but the attendants told us that they had filmed Carolyn's burial scene there and then showed us how to get to the mausoleum it was filmed at. That isn't the only attraction to the cemetery though, the place is immense, fascinating and full of some of the most beautiful monuments I have ever seen. We found out there are a ton of really fun things going on in the area for Halloween so we're heading back then!

PPS - My camera died on me and my sister's seemed to malfunction in the hall, so the only pictures I have from the fest are of the recreation of part of the drawing room set w/ me in costume.

If you walked out the main room and down the dealers hallway, across from Marie Wallace's table (if I recall) there was a set of double doors leading out to a small enclosed dining area. We only found it by accident looking for a way outside.

PS - Thanks Joeytrom for the pics!

I forgot to mention, it was my first time seeing Betsy Durkin in person. I have vocally pointed fun at her portrayal of Vicki in the past, but she is sincerely a sweet and very charming woman. I'm glad she was welcomed so warmly and allowed to become such an integral part of the Fest.

Was that the area with all the little white tables, and it had a garden surrounding it? Because I went out there on Friday, maybe Thursday evening, and saw nothing out there, so didn't go back out there again. Dammit! And I just knew that I read somewhere that there would be another replica of Collinwood there this year. Jim should've said something about it!

Now I'm all disappointed lol.

Crazy, I NEVER saw that set. Very cool pic. I also saw you walking around with your Quentin Figure!

Frid's introducing the clips was fun and heartwarming in parts, but PLEASE get an editor, Fest folks. He's on for an hour, by all means let's run clips that are way longer than they need to be (and that we've all seen before) for 75% of that hour.  :'(

This was only my second fest, but lots of fun and I met all sorts of interesting folks this time.

Returned from the fest late yesterday. I was estatic to see Jonathan Frid for the first time .I thought he was in good spirits and seemed to enjoy himself. I was thrilled when he did the "Tell Tale Heart". I saw him several times in the hotel walking here and there but did not approach him. The weather and Lyndhurst could not have been better. Coming back home to 91 degrees was not something I looked forward to.
I must say that other than Jonathan Frid I was a bit disappointed this year. We arrived on Thursday and hung out in the lobby both Thursday and Friday and for the most part it was dead there. I remember years past everyone was around and you could visit for awhile. I really look forward to those visits in the lobby or bar. Saturday night was busy even though the lobby bar was not open for business. Last time it was open for food and drink but security told me they did not believe it would be busy enough to open this year.Thought that was strange. The ladies of Dark Shadows all looked great.
I skipped the banquet after seeing I was one of the last in the waiting line and went to Ruth Chris instead. My friend Renee and I gave out tickets to some vounteers who wanted to go. After hearing how crammed it was in there I was glad I did it. I knew we would be one of the last tables and just could not imagine Jonathan Frid could go table to table and personalize the photos. I decided I was happy with the unpersonalized one.
I only got to see a few of the members here and some I know their real names but not sure what their profile name is here. Anyway, everyone looks well. Amazing how we all seem to get younger every year isn't it ;D
Prof. Stokes I missed you!!!!!!! :(
Hope everyone made it home ok.

Thanks to everyone for their great reports and beautiful photographs!  I haven't attended a Fest since 1997 (yikes, that's 10 years!!  :o ) so it's wonderful to hear the reports.

Was there any mention of the recent film announcement, and if so, how is the reaction among the original cast members?  Do they feel positively about the prospect of a DS film?

Thanks!

i was only there for a few hours on saturday so my observations are few.

obviously it was a great treat to see jonathan although i agree that the editing could of been a bit tighter on the clips he narrated.needless to say he was greeted with sustained ovations.

there weren't alot of new offerings in terms of the merchandise.lara, diana and kathryn seem to be plugging the same books as in years past.i believe that lara offered a cd reading of "the salem branch" which i certainly wasn't tempted to go for considering how much i loathed the book.

one thing i did pick up which was very well done was "dark shadows:the first year" book.it's quite nice.there is alot of interesting trivia.for instance i never knew that lara parker originally auditioned for the role of victoria.how ironic is that?

there is also a nice foreward by writer ron sproat.fans of the pen plot will be glad to know that the writers themselves never fully understood it. ::)

the production documents from episode one are included with vivid details of everthing from props to sets to wardrobe.

there is a cool description of collinwood from the orginal abc-tv publcity material...

"the great dark hulk of collinwood looms on the crest of the rocky cliff known as widows hill, overlooking the small maine fishing village of collinsport.the home of the collins family was built in 1830,modelled in the style of an english manor house.there is a large central hall, with wings extending in both directions.two stories in height,a total of forty rooms in all,a graceful carriage road adding majesty to it's entrance, commanding a magnificent view of the ocean, collinwood is the most imposing structure in the area.now however a good portion is closed off;weeds have overgrown the formal gardens, and the few people who live in it...the sole remaining members of the collins family...walk like ghosts through it's dark corridors."

it was nice to see everyone and i'm sorry i didn't get to say goodbye to midnite.
i needed to get back to town early. :-*

Housefly, KLS and Laura gave some fun choices, and I'm glad to hear they seem excited.  Claude, I agree on Charlize- I hadn't thought of her but she would be a great Angelique!  She is very beautiful but she can be creepy, too.  She's also worked with Johnny before (The Astronaut's Wife) so that may be a plus.

Michael, I hadn't heard about the new book, Dark Shadows: The First Year, and it sounds stunning!  Thanks so much for quoting that description of the Great House and the grounds.  I just love stuff like this.

Technically speaking, "the first year" includes the intro of Barnabas and the arrival of a certain meddlesome doctor on the scene... but I would guess that this book ends with the disappearance of Laura Collins and the arrival of Jason Maguire.

I had heard that fan vendors were excluded from this event which no doubt accounts for the lack of anything new to buy.  In theory, I would have loved to have come out for Saturday, but I had a very full weekend here trying to get my new house organized and being taken out to lunch by various kind friends who were concerned that I might be getting a little loopy surrounded by my "orgy of hatboxes."

cheers, Steve

Small correction - the CD reading by Lara Parker is of the out-of-print Angelique's Descent, not The Salem Branch.

All in all, I have to say, it was fabulous, despite it being a day shorter than an actual festival. And, the good news is, they've already announced next year's fest -- July 18 - 20 -- a full three days! It'll be in Burbank this time, which should delight the West Coast folks who've had to fly out two years in a row to the EAst Coast.

Jonathan Frid did look great and was quite spry, as someone else said. It was a pure delight to see him. I, too, though, thought it rude of people to "groan" when he couldn't sign all those photos at the actual banquet. Heck -- I don't think I could have done it, and I'm much younger than Frid. He was a sport, and I did see him in the morning. Fortunately, there wasn't much of a line, but someone who was there after I left told me that he was asked to stay and sign other things. I hope he didn't do it. He had to have been exhausted. Still, the tremendous reception he got was heartwarming.

As for the banquet, it was unbelievable how many people were packed into the room. It truly was frightening. Thank God nothing happened!

I just want to publicly state here how grateful I am to Nancy Kersey for all she did to make this happen and for her unbelievable hard work during the event. She deserves a plaque or something -- hey! A medal -- and even that wouldn't begin to cover it. She was a trouper, through and through! Thank you, Nancy, from the bottom of this fan's heart! I only wish I could have grabbed you for a second to buy you a drink!

Thanks again Michael for the info.  With DS I am trying to concentrate on getting rid of my videotapes (replacing them with the DVDs) and I am actually giving some of my books and zines away to deserving fans... but the new book sounds as if it has some lovely material and might be a nice memento to have.

;D We got back around 3PM yesterday. After all was over, including JF signing on Sunday morning we drove to Seaview Terrace at Newport R.I. to see the "real" Collinwood. We hit the road about 10:30 Sunday morning. It made for a long drive but it was very much worth it. ;D I even got me some rocks from the beach below Widow's Hill! ;D
;D It was my first going to a DS fest and I couldn't be happier. Everything about it was super great. I even enjoyed standing in the long lines. They gave me a chance to talk with other DS fans inperson and that doesn't happen alot. I'm happy about every cent that I spent. ;D
;D I started trying to talk me wife into going next year last night. My daughter is in Ca. but I think she'll be back before then. Her husband is in the Navy and he's in school there. It would make it easier if they were still going to be there. ;D As for me I'm still going to try.

A big "thank you" goes out to everybody that worked on this. You all did a great job.

As for the new DS, I think Keira Knightly and Charlize Theron and both beauitful women and they could do justice to the parts with the right script. However I don't believe there are ANY ladies around today that ARE as beautiful as KLS or LP. And I mean that in every sense of the word.

:-[ It is true that I've had a crush on the ladies for 40 years or so, and maybe I still do, but that's still how I feel about it. :-[

Yep, great job, Nancy.  Thank you for making it happen!  And Bobbi put in so much hard work, too.

I just knew that I read somewhere that there would be another replica of Collinwood there this year. Jim should've said something about it!

Now I'm all disappointed lol.

Aw, bummer, Brandon.  Jim did announce it, but that was right after the skit by the Collinsport Players.  Since the skit was rescheduled to follow the Reader's Theater instead of precede it (presumably so as to not delay Frid any longer,) a good deal of the audience-- many of them no doubt anxious to prepare for the banquet-- had already exited, and I'm guessing that's why you didn't hear the announcement.  Which is a shame, since the skit was really worth seeing.  Even if you'd seen last year's "Golden Shadows," this year's script was updated with a few modern references and rewritten to include an appearance by Angelique (played by Lara Parker).  More on one of those new jokes a little later...  ;)

And wow, thanks to Joeytrom, arashi, and jimbo for sharing your Fest pics.  arashi, congrats on your auction win.

Lovely seeing, from the Forums:  Teresalita, ReneeC, arashi, AngeliqueWins, Raineypark, Mary, jimbo, Evan Hanley, mscbryk, Miranda, Selby_D._Pearson, sheenasma, MsCriseyde, Dawn, EmeraldRose, CyrusL, adamsgirl, LdyAnne, Nancy, JVjr, BuzzH, Karlenfan, John_in_SC, Nancybe, Bette, Julia99, Bobubas, clevergirl, Charles_Ellis, Cassandra, darkshadowsrick, Shadowlady, D_Friedlander, CrazyJenny, Stuart, johnpeternyc, DarkShadowsFestMC, The Ghost of Sarah Collins, Connie, LoveAtFirstBITE, VAM, and KathleenResch.

Gothick, the "DS: The First Year" book is that reprint of "The History of DS 66-67" we waited ages for.  I bought it for the pictures, actually.  The summaries of the 2 books end within an ep of each other; DS:TFY finishes with #210.  You can buy it via the Fest site (http://www.darkshadowsfestival.com/page06.htm).  And we missed you loads, baby.

Housefly Cameo, were you able to find the remains of Spratt House??!!

Aristede11, welcome!

Let me add to everyone's kudos to Joeytron for the grand selection of photos.  I finally had the chance to look at them today and they're a marvelous evocation of the event.  Was Terrayne Crawford there?  I saw a woman in one snap that looked a lot like her.

Midnite, thanks for the nice note.  I'm afraid I had completely forgotten the DS 66/67 book!  My interest in the new publication mainly revolves around the photos, early ABC publicity material, and any anecdotes they were able to cull from this generally neglected period in the series history.

No, I was there during the skit at this year's fest, Midnite. I wasn't going to stay, but I liked last years so much that I didn't mind sitting through it again. And that joke about DC's black book was PRICELESS!

I must've just got up too fast at the end to rush out and get ready for the banquet, and that's probably why I didn't hear Pierson announce it.

That's too bad, but I understand your not wanting to try.  I searched on Friday without enough information, so we found the remains of a fountain but not THE fountain.  Other fans were arriving as we pulled out, so I wondered if you were one of them.  But after someone directed us from the first fountain, we returned on Saturday to quick success.  So if you return, please don't hesitate to ask your question again.  I heard that GPS coordinates might be out there too.

HC,

I paid a $3 grounds fee when I returned.  And yes, I used the main entrance, then drove past the mansion.  The ruins are to the South of it.

Now when you watch the first season of DS, with all the location shots, you can say that you've been there.

It gives those early shows a whole new feel. I get excited every time they go on location. The whole trip made me feel like a kid again. ;D

A $3 grounds fee? Rats! I thought I'd have to pay the whole 20 to get on the property. Fall field trip!

Thanks for the clues - if you (or anyone) are able to get at all more specific, I'd appreciate it.  :-*

the skit was really worth seeing.  Even if you'd seen last year's "Golden Shadows," this year's script was updated with a few modern references and rewritten to include an appearance by Angelique (played by Lara Parker).  More on one of those new jokes a little later...  ;)

So here goes...

Willie (Walter Down) informed Barnabas (Richie Halpern) that his portrait was finished, and revealed this much to Barn's dismay:

I LOVE IT!!  ;D

And look - a new trademark look: the curl under the eye and across the cheek instead of the spiky bangs. Someone inform Depp that's the way he should go.  [lghy]

No, I was there during the skit at this year's fest, Midnite. I wasn't going to stay, but I liked last years so much that I didn't mind sitting through it again. And that joke about DC's black book was PRICELESS!

How 'bout that Depp-Barnabas morph portrait they had?! Karlenfan and I told Peter Mac they could sell those bad-boys at the next Fest!  8)
