Title: Terror at Collinwood
Post by: Gothick on May 02, 2021, 03:11:24 PM
Our very own and much beloved Penny Dreadful has begun a new DS podcast: TERROR AT COLLINWOOD!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irvY8PAuueQ&list=PLkKN4d4hugdPuC5Fqbsr_xyehJzIwkZSF&index=94

There's a website for the podcast, too:

https://www.terroratcollinwood.com/

Themes from the first episode include Penny's memories of how she got into DS thanks to her extremely cool Uncle Vlad (!), her discovery of DS fandom in the 1980s, general thoughts about the series and its relationship to the genres of the Gothic tradition and supernatural terror in literature and film, and her conviction, which she argues brilliantly, that DS was NOT CAMP.

cheers, G.

Many thanks, Gothick, for the information regarding Penny’s superb podcast. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Penny’s insightful comments on the beloved Dark Shadows.

I happened to be thumbing through my copy of KLS’ first DS book, “My Scrapbook Memories of Dark Shadows” the other day (which I purchased at a long-since-gone bookstore, located right next to Radio City Music Hall on 6th Avenue in 1986). Penny was right-on when she opined that KLS’ terrific book provided DS fans with Ms. Scott’s recollections of appearing on DS and nearly 80 pages of outstanding DS photographs, along with a 20 page synopsis of the DS story line. What a book!

Penny mentioned Dale Clark and Kathy Resch, editors and publishers of “Inside the Old House” and “The World of Dark Shadows,” respectively, the two finest DS fanzines. Dale has also written a series of superb DS novels, which I recommend to all DS fans.

It was great hearing Penny relate how she became a fan of DS, due to her uncle’s love of the classic Universal Film Studio horror films and, of course, his “grainy videotapes” of Dark Shadows. I suspect many of us became diehard DS fans after learning of the show from other family members or friends. One of my friends clued me into DS in 1968 and there was no turning back from then on!

It’s hard to imagine (not to mention, somewhat saddening to realize) that it has been 50 years since DS has been cancelled. Throw in this God-awful pandemic and I can’t blame people of a “certain age” from experiencing some degree of weltschmerz. As Penny pointed out, the late, great Jonathan Frid once described Dark Shadows as a “dark Brigadoon,” which provided people with a welcomed respite from the turmoil and tribulations of the 1960s. I hope Penny’s podcasts provide us with a similarly welcomed respite from the many troubles of today. Of course, we’ll also gain new insights, in addition to much wit and fun, as Penny opines on the greatest Gothic horror show of all time.

Best of luck with your new podcast, Penny!

Bob, child of the 1950s and reluctant sexagenarian of the new millennium.

Thanks so much for listening & for your kind words, Bob_the_Bartender! xo

In other news, I'm currently wrestling with Apple Podcasts over getting the RSS feed approved. The image is sized exactly to their strict specifications, but it still isn't being recognized in their online submission form for some reason. Squarespace says it meets all requirements, but still no dice. Unfortunately, this is preventing me from submitting it for verification and Apple isn't replying to my requests for help. I'll keep trying though. I want to make this podcast something that really celebrates our favorite show in a fun, positive way and I hope to get some fan guests on to join me for a spell to geek out over their favorite storylines and characters.

PS - I didn't get the chance to go into the internet age and the wonderful DS Forums here, but I will remedy that in a future episode!

Interesting info about both the NoDS restoration and the continuing saga of the "Reincarnation" reboot. Good stuff!

I haven't seen any of Ansel Faraj's films, but I added the one about the Haunted House of Venice Beach to my Watch Later list on you tube. As Ansel mentions in the interview, this was the final work Chris Pennock ever performed in, and it's mentioned that he recites a piece of poetry that is VERY familiar to veteran DS fans. May his spirit know peace.

Great interview / look at the Leviathans storyline.

Coincidentally I had just finished reading through that storyline.

What did Jeb look like?
Even though I haven’t really read any books about Cthulhu I pictured something like it with dark colors and octopus like tentacles.

The 80’s G.I. Joe cartoon episode “Skeletons in the Closet” featured a Cthulhu inspired
monster, so that might have helped me picture it.
Hasbro’s YouTube page features the episode free if anyone is interested.

MB, this most recent episode where Danielle interviews Jeff Kenny will interest you in one detail. Around the 42 minute mark of the interview, Jeff reveals that he was the one who found the original film footage of that 1966 DS promo that was included in the Blu Ray release of that Dan Curtis documentary a few years back. I remember that that material was very exciting for you because you had a memory of having seen the promo way back when.

As Danielle comments, the fact that this turned up in a random eBay auction gives one hope that other long lost material could someday surface. You know hope springs eternal here for Grayson's Playtex commercial--as well as her GIRL TALK interview!

Dare to dream! In addition to Jeff's incredible DS find, the fact that I was able to track down locally-produced footage of Simon's Sanctorum, the horror host from early 70's Boston TV, gives me hope that more DS rarities might be found as well. I won't rest (in peace) until I see episode 1219 and Barnabas hula hooping on the Bozo show! [clown]

In addition to what Gothick mentioned, there are several other vintage DS clips that I'd like to see resurface. The bit of Frid showing up as Barnabas to interact with hostess Gloria DeHaven on Prize Movie on WABC would be one. Frid's guest appearance on The Mike Douglas Show, with cohost Barbara Parkins, would be another. The ultimate would be the 1969 promotion for ABC's Saturday morning lineup, with the cast of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and a special appearance by Captain Gregg's good friend Barnabas Collins. Yeah, Frid and Charles Nelson Reilly sharing the screen. The mind reels.
I'd also like to see Nancy Barrett and Lisa Richard's as Rachel Wilson and Susan Barry on OLTL from around 1974. Clarice Blackburn was on the show as Hattie Fredericks, Dorian's housekeeper. Yeah, another housekeeper. But at least she didn't have to wear a wig as Hattie

Correction: According to the interview with Bob Cobert in the booklet included with Discs 5 & 6 of ‘The Complete Dark Shadows Soundtrack Music Collection’ – “Many people assume that the instrument playing the Dark Shadows theme was a Theremin, but it wasn’t. The opening theme was neither a Theremin nor an Ondes Martinot. It was a Yamaha synthesizer with a string on it that made a Theremin-like sound. We couldn’t find an Ondes Martinot player or a Theremin player in New York, so we used that, and it was played by a very famous pianist named Dick Hyman… What you’re hearing in the theme is, melodically, a Yamaha on top, an alto flute on the bottom, then a bass, vibes, and harp, playing atonal accompaniment – five players in all.” I actually knew about this but misremembered the tweaked synthesizer organ as the way Robert Cobert initially presented the theme to Dan Curtis. Cobert presented the theme to Curtis by describing it and sort of whistling it while shaking his head about. I pulled the instrument listing (including the Theremin) from an online article and should have double-checked everything before recording the episode. Apologies. Also, from the same interview: “Almost all of the Dark Shadows music cues were recorded in England. It was money, pure and simple.”

Perhaps somewhat fancifully, I will now think of the music that played for those five shadowy years as "a cousin from England."

Thanks for the further info!

Thanks to Chris DeLuca of Horror Host Graveyard and Luke Foster of the 'Nine Panel' Nerds podcast for their assistance with the Bob MacCabre clip. Interview with Bob Austin was conducted the late Dave Krause.

NOTE TO DS HISTORIANS: Note the segment at the very end! I have to wonder if Mr. Austin was misremembering the date. As I enderstand it, the cast and crew of DS knew the show was going off the air by Christmas of 1970. Bob says the show was cancelled a week after he went to audition. Also, he says he auditioned for the part of "Barnabas' brother" which is bizarre. Maybe he was auditioning for Roxanne's brother Randall Drew and is misremembering the details? Or, perhaps they did have some crazy storyline planned involving a long-lost brother? I remember hearing this interview years ago and kind of filed it away in my memory banks. One can only imagine what this was all about.

Terror at Collinwood Episode 42: House of Dark Shadows with Ricardo Delgado

Released in 1970, and directed by Dan Curtis, the MGM theatrical film House of Dark Shadows featured the TV series cast in a darker and more violent reimagining of the Introduction of Barnabas storyline from the show. The picture proved to be a hit for MGM, and while it is loved by many fans and disliked by others, it stands as a notable and compelling entry in vampire film history. Visiting the podcast to discuss House of Dark Shadows is prolific Hollywood conceptual designer and artist, Ricardo Delgado. Ricardo’s book Dracula of Transylvania and the upcoming Art of Dracula of Transylvania are also discussed. Other topics include Ricardo’s memories of watching Sombras Tenebrosas (Dark Shadows) as a child in Costa Rica, buying Famous Monsters of Filmland, reading Marvel’s Tomb of Dracula and Werewolf by Night comics, and much more!

Ah, yes, Barnabas and Dr. Hoffman’s trip to 1995 was one of the highlights of DS. How well I remember how shocking and fascinating (Sebastian Shaw’s “favorite” adjective) it was to see the great house of Collinwood in ruins way back then in 1970! Still, I wish we had gotten to see more of Collinsport in 1995. What did the Blue Whale look like 25 years into the future? Was Susie the silent waitress still slinging hash at the Collinsport Inn’s coffee shop?

With the destruction of Collinwood, was Roger Collins (presumably back from that seemingly never-ending business trip to London) still running the Collins cannery and the Collins fishing fleet during Bill Clinton’s first term as POTUS?
How did it come about that Collinsport’s unnamed sheriff sounded more like he hailed from Selma, Alabama than Collinsport, Maine?

Finally, when the aged Professor Timothy Elliott Stokes informed Julia that Quentin had been institutionalized at the Stormcrest Sanitarium for the past 25 years, why didn’t Julia ask him, “Why didn’t you commit Quentin to my hospital, Windcliff, and toss me all of that money to care for the ‘Dorian Grey of Collinsport’ for all those years?”

Come to think of it, why didn’t Julia and Barnabas take a drive over to Windcliff to check out Julia’s hospital after 25 years? By the way, can you imagine the looks on the faces of the Windcliff Hospital’s current medical staff when the much-revered Dr. Julia Hoffman showed up after being apparently AWOL for a quarter of a century? Oy vey!

Yes, what we all COULD have seen during Barnabas and Julia’s sojourn to the future. Alas, what might have been.

Terror at Collinwood Episode 46: The Summer of 1970 storyline with Stephen R. Shutt & David M. Wingrove

A claustrophobic sense of doom pervades the Summer of 1970, the final present-day storyline on Dark Shadows. In it, Barnabas Collins and Dr. Julia Hoffman try to unravel the mystery behind the insidious and increasingly malignant hauntings at the great house in an effort to prevent the destruction of Collinwood and its inhabitants. Meanwhile, they must also deal with a mysterious new vampire who prowls the estate. Professor and writer David Melville Wingrove and writer Stephen Robert Shutt (aka Gothick) visit the Terror at Collinwood podcast to dissect and explore this oft-ignored and/or scorned storyline, examining its various literary inspirations along the way. Often seen as DS’ attempt to recapture the success of the 'Turn of the Screw'-inspired “ghosts of Quentin and Beth” storyline, Summer of 1970 pulls inspiration from several classic sources, including tales by Oliver Onions and M.R. James, with a nod to Sheridan Le Fanu.

Yes, what we all COULD have seen during Barnabas and Julia’s sojourn to the future. Alas, what might have been.

One possibility is that Stormcrest IS Windcliff. Maybe the state, or some private entity, took ownership and changed the name. I guess it wouldn't make much sense for them to change it from "Windcliff" to "Stormcrest", unless they were trying to escape possible negative associations with "that old madhouse, Windcliff" or something.

Terror at Collinwood Episode 47: Night of Dark Shadows with Darren Gross

Released in 1971, MGM’s Night of Dark Shadows was the second DS feature film. Directed by Dan Curtis, the motion picture featured many members of the TV series cast in a gothic tale of ghostly obsession. Sadly, after viewing the 129-minute director’s cut of Night of Dark Shadows, MGM studio head James Aubrey demanded that Curtis cut nearly 45 minutes out of the movie, giving him until the next day to do so. In this episode, director and film archivist Darren Gross visits the podcast to share his thoughts on NoDS and also offers updates on his long-anticipated restoration of the director’s cut of the picture. Described by ‘The Guardian’ as a “movie sleuth and champion of lost causes,” Darren miraculously unearthed the previously lost NoDS footage and prepared a restored version of the movie which has not yet been released to the public. In addition to discussing NoDS and its restoration, Darren also talks about his work on the ‘Dark Shadows’ Big Finish audio dramas, his enthusiasm for TV horror host Commander USA, and much more!

Terror at Collinwood Episode 51: Vote Dan Curtis for Rondo Awards Monster Kid Hall of Fame!

The twenty-first annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards are upon us! A special category in the Rondos is the write-in for Monster Kid Hall of Fame, which honors those who’ve made a permanent mark on the world of classic horror appreciation. Many of the inductees are/were fans of the genre themselves. This award is a rare distinction indeed, and there are several notable recipients. Missing from the list, however, is Dark Shadows creator Dan Curtis! This episode of Terror at Collinwood includes a series of interview clips featuring Dan Curtis himself, along with writer Sam Hall and actress Lara Parker. The clips help illustrate why Curtis should be considered for Monster Kid Hall of Fame status. A known enthusiast of classic terror tales and motion pictures, Curtis certainly made prominent puncture marks on the genre with Dark Shadows. He also unleashed the iconic The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler, and he helmed adaptations of Dracula, Frankenstein, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Turn of the Screw, and The Picture of Dorian Gray. He directed both Dark Shadows MGM feature films, the horror cult classics Burnt Offerings, Trilogy of Terror, Dead of Night, and many more! After his epic miniseries Winds of War and War and Remembrance, he returned to the world of the gothic with the 1991 Dark Shadows revival series, which featured horror legend Barbara Steele (who is also long past due for induction into the Monster Kid Hall of Fame). See the full ballot at https://rondoaward.com/ and email your votes to taraco@aol.com. Voting is open until Sunday at midnight, April 23, 2023. PS - And thanks to those who nominated Terror at Collinwood for Best Podcast and Penny Dreadful for Favorite Horror Host. It's an honor to be on the ballot, twice!

It was fascinating to listen to your detailed commentary upon this screenplay, with excellent comments from Madelyn and Patrick, too.

I never expected the John August screenplay to turn out to have been an even bigger trainwreck than what was eventually filmed from that other writer (Seth Grahame-Smith).

I liked Patrick's theory that August was dictating this whilst drinking and as it went on, he just became less and less coherent. It seems a feasible explanation for just how little any of this made sense.

Returning to ‘Terror at Collinwood’ are Guy Haines, Bob Issel, and Nina Ogle, who all became enamored with ‘Dark Shadows’ when it originally aired in the 1960’s and early 1970’s. They’ve remained steadfast fans of the show, becoming heavily involved in DS fan events and activities over the years. Listen as these three fandom all-stars share many fascinating stories including: how they discovered DS and its fan community, memories of ShadowCon and the Dark Shadows Festivals, meetings and interactions with actors such as Jonathan Frid, Kathryn Leigh Scott, Louis Edmonds, Nancy Barrett, and Joan Bennett, visiting Charles Randolph Grean’s house, parties at Seaview Terrace, creating fan collectibles based on the Ben Cooper Barnabas Collins Halloween costume, trips to Essex, Connecticut to visit “the Evans Cottage”, and much more!

Hi, Penny,

Congratulations on your induction into the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards Monster Kid Hall of Fame. I remember seeing the late Rondo Hatton as “The Hoxton Creeper,” in the Sherlock Holmes film, “The Pearl of Death.” Mr. Hatton would have been great on DS as a either a Leviathan or one of Judah Zachary’s zombie pirates, that trashed the great house of Collinwood!  [nods] [easter_cheesy]

I especially enjoyed your discussion on DS with Guy Haines, Bob Issel and Nina Ogle. Their memories of watching DS as kids and their recollections of both attending and volunteering at the Dark Shadows Festivals were terrific. I also enjoyed hearing them relate their personal interactions with several of the DS actors.

I have seen several of the excellent videos that Guy Haines recorded at several of the DS Festivals. And, I believe that Bob Issel used to post here on the Dark Shadows Forums. I agree with Guy, Bob and Nina that it would be great if a possible new DS series also helped to bring back the Dark Shadows Festivals on a regular
basis.

I look forward to watching your next insightful DS discussion on your superb podcast.

Thank you so much, Bob! I was encouraging fans to vote for Dan Curtis, who also got voted into the Rondo Monster Kid Hall of Fame, but was certainly not expecting to get voted in too. I was hoping I could make it out to WonderFest for the awards ceremony, but it's less than 4 weeks away, so it's looking iffy. If not, I'll submit a video. I'm still gobsmacked by the whole thing.

Those would have been such perfect DS roles for Rondo Hatton! I could easily see him as a robed Leviathan or as a zombie pirate. A Rondo Hatton and Tor Johnson zombie teamup would've been fun too.

Thanks also for the kind words about the podcast. I loved hearing from Guy, Nina, and Bob and honestly could have just let kept listening to them for a couple more hours, at least! Guy definitely will be back on at some point to talk about his trip to Seaview with Jonathan Frid and other DS-themed adventures.

Penny,

Yes, Tor Johnson would have been great on DS; he was a former wrestler, who appeared in some of director Ed Wood’s finest (read lousiest) films like “Bride of the Monster” and  “Plan 9 From Outer Space,” widely regarded as the “Citizen Kane of Truly Lousy Films.” I particularly liked Mr. Johnson as “Lobo,” the mute servant, along with the immortal Bela Lugosi in “Bride of the Monster.”

I believe you mentioned the late, great John Zacherle on one of your podcasts. I well remember Mr. Zacherle, who dressed up just like Lon Chaney in the original “Phantom of the Opera, when he hosted, usually, truly dreadful 1950s horror and sci-fi films on WPIX-Channel 11 in NYC back during the early 1960s.

Mr. Zacherle used to literally interject himself into these cinematic stinkers like “Frankenstein’s Daughter.” One time, in sci-fi film about a giant octopus terrorizing a Southern California beach community, there was a scene where a young woman in a rowboat tries unsuccessfully to pull up the boat’s rope and anchor (with the octopus pulling down on the anchor). However, instead of the octopus, we see Zacherle, wearing a 1920s men’s bathing
suit, and pulling DOWN on the rope and anchor. [nods] [easter_grin] It was very funny!

I think watching John Zacherle, satirizing those old, classic horror and sci-fi films “prepared” me to appreciate
and enjoy all of the off-the-wall things that we all saw on DS several years later.  [easter_rolleyes] [easter_grin]
[easter_wink]

I suspect that young kids across America watched horror movie, tv hosts similar to John Zacherle, and these classic horror tv show hosts inspired all those kids to become devoted DS viewers several years later.  [easter_grin] [easter_evil] [easter_cheesy]

I would see Zacherley whenever I went to Chiller Theater. He was quite a character. I have pictures of him with Johnny Ramone of The Ramones. And a couple of pictures of him reuniting with fellow WPIX alumni Chuck McCann.

I would see Zacherley whenever I went to Chiller Theater. He was quite a character. I have pictures of him with Johnny Ramone of The Ramones. And a couple of pictures of him reuniting with fellow WPIX alumni Chuck McCann.

John Zacherley (or Zacherle) was quite a guy, in addition to hosting horror movie shows, he was the emcee at many rock & roll concerts. I remember seeing Mr. Zacherley at a concert, where he introduced the Canadian rock band, Lighthouse. He also graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and served as a US Army officer in North Africa and Europe during World War II. And, like DS’s own Ezra Braithwaite, Mr. Zacherley lived to the
ripe old age of 98.

Chuck McCann was another great NYC tv host on Channel 11. Mr. McCann hosted an afternoon show, featuring the legendary comedy team of Laurel & Hardy. Chuck McCann, being a big man physically, would often dress up like Oliver Hardy and do a great impression of him with another actor portraying Stanley Laurel. When the NYC newspapers went on strike, Mr. McCann would dress up like the little Italian boy, Dondi, detective Dick Tracy and even Little Orphan Annie and read each day’s comic strips to all the kids that were missing their favorite comic strip characters during the newspaper strike.

In addition to John Zacherley, there were many other terrific horror hosts across America. Vampira was another of the early tv horror hosts in Los Angeles during the 1950s. Vampira (actress Maila Nurmi) also appeared in the “legendary” film, “Plan 9 From Outer Space.”

I remember former Saturday Night Live performer Dennis Miller speaking of a tv horror host in the Pittsburgh area he watched as a kid on tv. Dennis Miller said this host wore one of the worst toupees he ever saw. I can’t remember the guy’s name. Maybe our DS cousin, Josette, remembers who that Pittsburgh-based tv horror host was?

Of course, there have been other excellent tv horror hosts since the 1950s/1960s, including Elvira, Mistress of the Dark on Los Angeles tv and the irrepressible Svengoolie, who started out in Chicago and is now seen
nationally on MeTV on Saturday night. I believe Svengoolie aired Grayson Hall’s “Gargoyles” not long ago.

I wonder if David Collins and Amy Jennings watched a similar tv horror host on Saturday nights at Collinwood back during the late 1960s? Although, after their own personal adventures in the great house, watching old horror and sci-fi films on tv must have seemed pretty tame.  [easter_undecided] [easter_rolleyes]

I do have a signed 8x10 photo of Chuck McCann as Little Orphan Annie in my collection. Maybe the sun won't come up tomorrow. 😉😉😉
After one of my Chiller visits, I was showing my pictures from the event to my coworkers. One of the girls named Cherry looked at some of the photos rather intently. And she asked that was Zacherley in the pictures. After I confirmed it, she looked at me and said, "You know, I used to f**k him."
By the way, Cherry was none other than Cherry Vanilla, who was part of the Andy Warhol crowd in the 1960's. She was on the verge of becoming really famous several times but apparently settled for infamous.

Didn't Zacherly host the party celebrating DS return to NYC in syndication that WNBC held when they brought DS to the NY area in 1982? Or am I getting my horror hosts confused?

Love that photo of Frid with Zacherley. Fun!

I enjoyed the chat with Rachel about Vicki. I'm in week 4 now of 1966 and Vicki is such a complex character.
Vicki, Burke, and the very disturbed child David were driving the plot in these early weeks, but the vibe is still one hundred percent DS. Of course our fabulous actors, Bob Cobert's incredible music and Sy Tomashoff's glorious sets have a lot to do with how it all comes together.

Wonderful photo!

And, like DS’s own Ezra Braithwaite, Mr. Zacherley lived to the
ripe old age of 98.

Found this in Robin's summary of #685:
Ezra pages through the ledger, mumbling to himself. He finds an entry, "April 16, 1897" and writes something down on a piece of paper. Quentin enters. Ezra greets him. I know you aren't Barnabas Collins, says Ezra--I assume you're the friend he spoke of. Quentin nods agreement. I got that information you and Barnabas wanted about the pentagram--I should have remembered it first thing--I made it myself! Quentin smiles and nods. I made it when I was 15 and a half, and engraved the quotation on the back--how could I forget the first piece of silver jewelry I made?--it's all in the ledger, in my own handwriting, one star medallion, engraved with quotation, "To guard you from the wrath of Cerberus," ordered by Miss Beth Chavez and charged to the account of Quentin Collins.

So that makes Ezra 87 at his death in 1969. ♥  (Don't get me started on Otis Greene's age, but that's for another topic anyway.)

Terror at Collinwood Episode 57: The 1840 Storyline with Amanda Desiree (the DS Boards' own ProfStokes!!) and Katherine Kerestman

The 1840 storyline is the penultimate Dark Shadows plot and the last one set in the show’s main timeband. Although it doesn’t receive as much adulation as the serial’s iconic 1795 and 1897 storylines, 1840 is filled with many delights. Featuring vivid new characters, shocking twists, as well as nods to previous DS stories and classic horror films, there is much to enjoy in the next-to-last DS storyline. Writers Amanda Desiree and Katherine “Creepy Cat” Kerestman visit the podcast to help shed some light on this sometimes-underappreciated DS segment.

You know, after listening to the lastest installment I feel compelled to say that you should never apologize talking about the characters and their relationships like they're real people. We've done and we still do it all the time around here. And many other fans have done and still do it elsewhere. It's a perfectly natural outgrowth of discussing the show. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's one of the most interesting aspects of the show to discuss.

As for Barnabas needing therapy before he should ever be with anyone romantically, hell yes! And 200 years of therapy probably isn't even anywhere near long enough to iron out all of his issues!!

And I totally agree that only what happened on the show is canon. Some of the things in Sam Hall's article were things that were actually planned for the show (like Carolyn turning out to be the reincarnation of Leticia Faye - and sadly, supposedly Roger discovering Barnabas' secret and being killed off (because Louis Edmonds wanted to leave the show). I agree with you, MB. I like the idea of Elizabeth being Vicki's mother. While the program implies it from time to time, it's never stated directly. Statements coming from Joan Bennett and Alexandra Isles made years after the show was canceled are not and cannot be canon. Even if it were stated as such, there's no reason to think that the revelation might be undone by a later storyline. Rex Balsom on OLTL had five different sets of parents on the show. He might have ended up with a few more if the series had not been canceled.
Did Louis Edmonds have some kind of falling out with DC towards the end of the series? He was featured fairly heavily in the parallel time story but doesn't appear in the 1995/1970 story at all. He does return to play Daniel, Amadeus and Brutus but none of those were major parts.
Only the most naive fans would have expected Joel Crothers to leave Secret Storm to play Joe Haskell again. Or would have expected TLATKLS to leave Paris. Don't get me wrong. I like the idea that Joe and Maggie got a lot happy ending but it reads like fan fiction to me.

Thanks, MB! I shall never apologize for that again! I agree with you, 100%.
Someone I know recently had a good-natured snicker because I tend to get carried away with that sort of thing, and I guess I started feeling a little self conscious about it. Such discussions are a major part of the fun, and I've always loved talking about that world and its characters from the "secondary world"/in-universe perspective.

Quote from: Mysterious Benefactor
As for Barnabas needing therapy before he should ever be with anyone romantically, hell yes! And 200 years of therapy probably isn't even anywhere near long enough to iron out all of his issues!!
And I totally agree that only what happened on the show is canon. Some of the things in Sam Hall's article were things that were actually planned for the show (like Carolyn turning out to be the reincarnation of Leticia Faye - and sadly, supposedly Roger discovering Barnabas' secret and being killed off (because Louis Edmonds wanted to leave the show). But much of the rest is quite fanciful wishful thinking...

I remember hearing that about Carolyn turning out to be the reincarnation of Leticia and Roger being killed off because of Louis Edmonds planning to leave the show. The seeds for Carolyn being Leticia's reincarnation were planted in Summer of 1970, so I could definitely see that (and her interest in the paranormal) being the next step in the character's evolution. Actually, in an earlier episode of the podcast, our own Gothick pointed out that Carolyn, Quentin, David, and Hallie are most likely all reincarnations of their 1840 counterparts. It seems that Hallie was the final "piece" needed to jumpstart the return of Gerard/Judah and Daphne.

If there's just ONE reason I'm happy DS ended when it did, it's the fact that Roger didn't get killed off! I remember feeling really sad when I first read that in the Sam Hall article. I mean, yeah, nobody is safe at Collinwood but gosh, I really wouldn't want to see Liz, Roger, Carolyn, and David truly die. We wouldn've gotten some Roger as a ghost fun, but still. On a related note, unless they could've convinced David Henesy to come back, they would have lost BOTH Roger and David! Yikes. Maybe they would have recast him, although I suspect fans wouldn't have accepted a new actor in the role. I like to imagine a scenario where both actors would've been given raises and talked into staying on with the show. haha. And then there's everything that went down between Dan Curtis and Jonathan Frid over NoDS around Dec. 1970. Yikes!

Uncle Roger - During 1995 and Summer of 1970, I believe Louis really was on vacation in Europe. I think he went to the UK during that timeframe and then came back in time for the 1840 storyline.

Re: Canon - this is why I get frustrated when I see Big Finish material mixed in with show canon in the DS Fandom Wiki. Don't get me wrong, I think the Wiki is a GREAT resource and appreciate all the effort that goes into it, but a designation is needed when non-show-canon Big Finish audio material is woven into the entries. I think that blurs the lines. I've seen/heard people claiming certain plot points from Big Finish "were mentioned in the show" when they were certainly were not.

Terror at Collinwood Episode 75: The Dreamers - The Novel that Inspired the Dream Curse with Amanda Desiree and Steve Shutt (aka the DS Forums' own ProfStokes and Gothick)

The Dream Curse storyline in Dark Shadows was inspired by an obscure 1957 horror novel called The Dreamers, written by Roger Manvell. Although this was revealed by writer Ron Sproat at the first DS Festival, many remain unaware of the book and its influence on the Dream Curse plot. Returning to the podcast are Amanda Desiree and Stephen R. Shutt, who are both writers and longtime fans of Dark Shadows and all things spooky. We spend the first half of this episode examining The Dreamers, comparing and contrasting the novel to the plot line in the show. In the second half of the episode, we have some fun interpreting the symbolism of the DS Dream Curse as we try to determine the greatest fear of each dreamer.

At any rate, in "The Dark Shadows Almanac: 30th Anniversary Tribute," there is a page titled "Dark Shadows Sources," and it lists a story by an unknown author, "The Dream Deceivers," as the inspiration for the 1968 Dream curse instigated by Cassandra Blair.

Does anyone know anything about this story? I've done a google search and didn't come up with anything.

- Philippe Cordier

If "The Dream Deceivers" was a published book or short story, Bette and Luciaphil were not able to find any trace of it back in 2002 using their library resources.
Midnite

Thanks, Midnite.

The Dream Curse storyline is the first extended sequence of DS that I remember from childhood, so it has special significance to me. It was so terrifying at that time. Surprisingly, I don't remember too much about it from my viewing of the series in the 1990s on SciFi.

It's interesting to think of the mileage that some unknown author's story got, and he or she has never been properly credited!

Philippe, I am THRILLED and delighted to hear this. Thank you for posting to let me know. I was really hoping the episode would reach those who've been asking this question for years. As mentioned in the episode, the waters were muddied by the odd inclusion in the Almanac and I put forward a couple of theories about why they did that. One I didn't mention was that it might've been an ill-conceived prank ("deceivers" - hmm), but I hope that itsn't the case. My guess is that it was kind of a fudge as a way of including it without drawing attention to the fact that the novel wasn't/isn't in the public domain! That said, neither is 'The Lottery', so who knows why that was done? Weirdly, the info has been out there for a long time as Ron Sproat told the fans at the first Festival that the Dream Curse storyline was inspired by the novel, 'The Dreamers'. It just flew past a lot of our radars. Hopefully, this episode will shed more light on it.

I think that would be the most reasonable assumption - if something is "inspired by" another work, with enough changes made from the source material, perhaps there wouldn't be any legal liability? TV shows seem to have done this all the time, yet I don't recall ever hearing of any lawsuits for plaigiarism with respect to this.

I'm glad I checked back to this thread because it reminded me that I didn't finish listening to the podcast - I only got to the point where you were discussing this issue, so I haven't heard the discussion of the book itself yet. I was able to find an out of print copy of the hardcover edition of the novel that is in very good condition (though without the dust jacket), and it appears to be very well written. I was surprised to see that the publisher was Simon & Schuster I think it was . . . not a publisher of "schlock" by any means!

Your upcoming interview with the Mr. Logan the screenwriter sounds really good, too!

I know Sam fairly well through Facebook, though we have yet to meet in person. Our paths first crossed many years ago when I attended the premiere of Elvira's Haunted Hills in California. First of all, congratulations to you, Penny. It's richly deserved!!

I know Sam fairly well through Facebook, though we have yet to meet in person. Our paths first crossed many years ago when I attended the premiere of Elvira's Haunted Hills in California. You would think that a movie premiere would be this glamorous, red carpet event. Obviously not, since they let me in. But the movie was a lot of fun and Elvira and Dam were both in attendance

Thanks Uncle Roger! Sam is so much fun! It's great that you were able to attend the premiere of Elvira's Haunted Hills!
