Sleepy Hollow and Depp Shadows
« on: September 16, 2013, 11:04:26 PM »
I just played this trailer, which practically qualifies as a mini-episode of the new Sleepy Hollow series starting this evening (9/16)--I spotted a few visual and other references that suggest the "writers and producers of Star Trek" are big fans of the Burton/Depp DARK SHADOWS.  Warning, SPOILERS if you plan to watch tonight (or record it and watch in the week), and you don't like spoilers, you'll probably want to wait and watch this trailer till AFTER you see the episode:

When I was young, Ichabod Crane was a gawky, tremulous scholar.  Now he's a hot, hunky soldier with an Oxbridge accent.  Times change, and not just from the 18th to the 21st century...

There were more similarities with the Depp/DS film than I was anticipating. But as for the show itself, I enjoyed it, and I'll be tuning back to see how the mythology unfolds.

Also, the show did well in its first airing:

Ratings: Sleepy Hollow Opens Strong

Though what it needs to do is to hold on to a lot those numbers. Things will most probably slip next week because the ratings for new show almost universally slip for their second eps - but if it doesn't slip too much, the show may turn out to be a hit. And if the current results in TV Guide's poll for the show is any indication, it may indeed hold on to a lot of those numbers because 87% of viewers in the poll voted that they liked the show.

My friend (who I think became a fan of Tom Misor thanks to his role in PARADE'S END) was watching with Tumblr opened and said that she saw a new fandom being born.  After the first ten minutes, the photos, screen captures, and fangirl ravings began to cluster thick and fast.

The trailer practically played like an homage to Depp Shadows.  I have to say I would have enjoyed the latter a lot more had Barnabas been played along the lines of how Misor is portraying Ichabod Crane.  But I'll spare you the rant.

For anyone who might have missed the pilot on Monday but might have wished they'd checked it out, there's good news because I see where it's repeating tonight at 9pm ET on FOX.

It might be worth noting that the pilot is available for free download from iTunes.  That's how I hope eventually to watch it.  I downloaded it yesterday but haven't had time to sit down with it yet.

A really cute clip from next week's episode, Blood Moon, which is set to have a Witchcraft theme:

Shades of the Depp/DS film again!  [ghost_wink]  Thanks for the link.  [ghost_smiley]

A really cute clip

And I'm sure that has nothing to do with the fact that he's shirtless.  [ghost_nowink]

I know I'm on the edge of getting way off topic here, but if you look closely when Ichabod wakes up from his "sleep" in that very witchy cave, there's one shot that shows his adorably pert nipple with exquisite chiaroscuro...

Just in case anybody out there cares.

I'll try to stop repeating this, but honestly--had the Depp/Burton version of Barnabas in 1972 been done like this... I would have been much happier with the results.  I played an interview today where Tom Mison mentioned that he had researched American speech patterns of the 1770s and tried playing the character with an authentic accent... the result was described as "inaudible" and "like pots and pans banging together."  I've read that Colonial Americans spoke with very flat vowels and an intonation much like what is today thought of as the Yorkshire accent... Tom mentioned another part of England.

cheers, G.

It's also On Demand.  I hadn't really realized what this was until I saw the repeat listed and figured that's what was being talked about here!  The timing of the repeat wasn't too convenient, so I checked out On Demand and saw it earlier today.  On my Comcast system, it's only available until the 23rd.

I really didn't want to get "stuck" with another series to watch!  But, I liked this, so, I'm probably stuck!!

A friend alerted me that this series is also available for free through hulu.  Or at least episode one was available.  I do not know if that means they will continue to carry it.

This is good news for the Live +3 Day numbers: FOX Highlights: 'Sleepy Hollow' Holds Strong In Week 2

And the show continued to do well in the Fast Overnights for its 3rd ep.
