DS Magic Slate

Someone is auctioning a Dark Shadows Magic Slate released by Whitman in 1969 with a starting bid of $999.00. Are these things that rare or sought after? I wonder if he'll get any takers...

They are pretty rare. But $999.00 rare? Not likely.  [ghost_shocked]  But never underestimate the willingness of some DS fans to spend astronomical amounts of money to acquire something...

There are COPIES of the Magic Slates going for $149.95 each at a BUY IT NOW price!  I won't be adding that item to my collectionn in the near future! I never say never. I swore, I'd not buy the DS Cookbook. It's connection to DS is tenuous at best, 2 pics and a few recipes named after characters. In a moment of weakness, I did throw down a bid for $22.87, figuring it would be outbid and I'd let it go unchallenged. It wasn't, and I own a copy of the book, for whaterever it's worth.  I can't imagine why anyone would want the slates that badly. Postage is $8.60 for the copy??? At that price, I'd throw in free shipping to the continental US!!

On the subject of insane prices on ebay, how 'bout $1,498.99 for a used copy of The Dark Shadows Companion?

It seems as if the seller is a bookstore, so they may not sell items other than books. But can you imagine if they tried to sell something truly valuable, say, like a mint set of the '68 pink cards? Though, as insanely greedy as they apparently are, they'd probably list the set separately at $500 for each card!!  ::)

Maybe it was supposed to be "14.98", and somebody wrote down "1498", and they have a policy of always having ".99" at the end of a price, so the person actually inputting the item was just following the rules they were given and put the price at "1498.99". Hey, it's entirely possible.

I just now followed the link for the book, and saw it was Powell's that listed the item. (And, as a matter of fact, it was indeed Powell's itself that I was picturing in my mind as I wrote my last post--I kid you not! It is an absolutely FABULOUS store, and if you're ever in Portland you absolutely MUST go there!) Anyhoo, I'm believing even more in my suggested scenario now.

But unless things have changed at eBay, if they had made that sort of a mistake, there would have been absolutely nothing that would have stopped them from deleting the listing with the supposedly incorrect price and reposting it. It was always the practice that even if a listing said it was to run for so many days, the seller could actually delete it at any time. And the fact that they haven't makes me suspect that IF it was a mistake, rather than delete it, they're waiting to see if anyone is foolishly insane enough to buy the book at that price...
