Season 1 finale: It’s friend against friend as the superpowered civil war changes everything. |
6 AM - Collinwood - Quentin comes downstairs and goes into the drawing room. Julia, who has fallen asleep in the chair, awakens. Joyfully, he says, it's over, the sun's up, it's morning. Julia is all set to go upstairs and check the children, but Quentin assures her, I've already been up there, and they are sound asleep-apparently, everything is all right. Thank heaven, says Julia gratefully. Collinwood never looked more at peace than last night, says Q. Perhaps something happened we don't know about, says Julia. Consider one other thing, says Quentin, Carolyn's cryptic warning about the night of the sun and the moon-perhaps it meant nothing at all. It was the last thing she did before she died, Julia reminds him-she wrote those clues. You said yourself Carolyn was mad, Q reminds her-perhaps the warnings of disaster came from that madness. Perhaps, agrees Julia, but there's one important thing we can't let out of our sight-this room was in ruins-the whole house was in ruins, everybody was gone except you and Carolyn, and you were both insane-I saw it, it was horrible-perhaps those clues aren't really clues, and we won't get anywhere with them, but we've got to try to prevent that total disaster and those clues are our only guide. Concerned, she leaves the drawing room. Quentin, grim-faced, watches her go.
... The shopping excursion certainly seems like it would have been some of Claire's best stuff in the film had it actually been shot. But alas...
And just so you'll be able to put a face to who might have been Gregory had his scenes actually been shot, here are the two actors of whom it's been reported were considered (Keith Prentice and Michael Stroka) and one that some fans have said they would have liked to have seen in the role (Louis Edmonds):
Louis would have been magnificent as Gregory!!!!
It's a fun scene. It really shows a genuine friendship between Tracy and Claire. And Gregory, well, is like no other character in the DS pantheon. Unfortunately, it doesn't add all that much to the film as a whole. It might have worked better if it had been intercut with bits of Carlotta or Gerard doing something nefarious back at Collinwood. I can see why DC chose not to shoot the scene. Which leads me to wonder if Gregory had even been cast. It wouldn't be like DC to cast an actor then have to pay him for doing nothing
From the way the sequence has been talked about, I doubt things ever got to the point where Gregory was actually cast. It seems like before production began some actors' names were bandied about, but before any might have been cast, DC decided to scrap the whole sequence. As far as even the 129 minute version of the finished film goes, the audience would be left forever wondering who Gregory was when Tracy told Quentin that "Gregory said I could take them back" after Quentin discovered she'd bought him a pair of riding breeches...
...
I have a feeling the shopping sequence was dropped primarily for budgetary reasons. Since they apparently decided to shoot the entire film on the Lyndhurst estate, it may have been difficult to find somewhere on site that didn't need a lot of set design/dressing work to make it convincing. Going into Tarrytown or Irvington would have probably added a lot of extra expense they didn't feel was warranted for a sequence that doesn't really advance the plot (even if it does enrich the characterizations).
Another thought regarding the shopping sequence. As much as I'd like to be able to see it on screen, I think it would feel quite out of place in the film that we have. It would be the ONLY interjection of a bit of the outside world, in what is otherwise a very weird, creepy, other-worldly bubble (which is one of the things I really love about the film).
Hannah answers the phone and assures Angelique, I took care of "it" without problems, but we must be very careful. Angelique interrupts her and says, I don't want to hear about it--you must come to me, I need your help--I was right about Dameon Edwards. Hannah, clearly frazzled, says, I can't do anything about Dameon, his spirit is too powerful. You can do nothing, but I can, Angelique assures her. Then do it, says Hannah. And expose myself? asks Angelique--oh, no--even Bruno accepts me now--I don't plan to take any chances--they will think you exorcised the ghost--I will do it through you.
I wish the Gregory scene had been included. But it was entirely about character development so of course, it had to go.
G.
I would definitely prefer Keith Prentice to Michael Stroka but my ideal choice for Gregory would have been Louis Edmonds.

Oh, Louis would have been a hoot in that role!
I also agree that Keith be preferable to Michael.

I agree. Though at least from what's been written, it doesn't seem like he was ever in contention.
...
Continuing with Scene 83, beginning with the 9th's quote, which is Claire's reply to Gregory's claim he has a jumper that she'll really like:Page 33/Scene 83 - Claire: 'Alex won't let me wear those knickers. He said if he had wanted to live with an 1890 newsboy he'd have found one.'
- and that's followed by the 10th's quote -Page 33/Scene 83 - Gregory: 'God knows where. Obviously he has no sense of style ... Chic. Come to my house next week for a drink and wear them. He'll adore them --'
- coming up, followed by the 11th's quote -Page 33/Scene 83 - Claire: 'He'll adore the drinks. This is Tracy Collins.'
- coming up, followed by today's quote -Page 33/Scene 83 - Gregory: 'The lady of the manor? (he bows) Welcome.'
- coming up.
And there's still absolutely nothing to get into when it comes to differences with the dialogue, the descriptions, or the directions because Scene 83 was never shot. Though today I do have to say that even though I think this scene would have been quite amusing no matter who might have played Gregory, of the candidates that have been mentioned, whenever I read the scene for some reason I tend to picture Keith Prentice in the part over Michael Stroka...
I'm afraid, he says. Of what? she asks, scared. I'm beginning to feel so alone! Says Alex. Tell me what's wrong, begs Megan, sounding irrational as she touches and paws him--what's bothering you, I must know so I can know what to do for you! (there's a healthy mama)"
