The superhero element probably wouldn't have worked. It would have likely intruded on someone's status on the show. But an angst ridden teenager with limited social skills who is also part arachnid? Well, David, here's your new storyline!

I don't know if that would have been enough of an incentive to keep Henesy on the show but it's different enough that he might have. Plus, Alex Stevens would get some work as the stunt Spidey.
