I also believe Barnabas had low self-esteem.  During the 1795 episodes, Barnabas seemed very much under his father's thumb.  Jeremiah also seems to tell Barnabas what to do.  Jeremiah and Joshua seemed to have equal say in the family business and Barnabas was just an employee.  He may have been the heir but was given very little power.  He was put down for being sensitive like his mother.  Towards the end of 1795, Barnabas became more assertive and his father disowned him and disinherited him.

Once again, the writers have written a character so badly that even tho she would seem to deserve all the sympathy in the world, it's hard for many of us to feel it.
raineypark

That sums it up perfectly for me.  The writers took a Jane Eyre character but did not develop her.  They throw her right into the thick of things and she makes one blunder after another.  She is not shown with the children much.  Her interaction with the other servants makes them suspicious of her.  If the writers had wanted her to appear sympathetic, they did a poor    job.  I don't think anyone deserves the childhood Rachel was given.  However, the writers should not have made her into a nincompoop.

Ya know . . . I doubt that Rachel and Tim the Dim had anything to do with killing ol' Simon off, but the money issue always troubled me.

Rachel shows up at Collinwood with a pretty extensive (and may I say, frivolous and impractical) wardrobe. Now I grant you, she claims the money was hers, but still . . . part of me wonders if they sort of had an expansive definition of "hers."

Neither she nor Tim impress me all that much. Wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason they both cave is because they are in fact guilty of some of the things Minerva and Gregory are accusing them of.

But yeah. My response would have been, "Go right ahead Mrs. Trask. Phone's over there."

Luciaphil

I have viewed this time period only once before.  Was't there a suspicion that the Rev. Trask killed his brother-in-law?  Obviously, Simon would be loyal to his sister and might have seen discrepancies in the books.

Rev. Trask has no problem later about murdering his wife to get money.  He probably would have murdered Judith, too.  He seems to have established a firm pattern to his behavior about getting money.

I have decided Rachael will go for just about anyone in pants.  Actually, who is it she is suppose to be attracted too?

Barnabas--gives great gifts, has money, escape from the governess world

Tim--great looking, good friend

Quentin- well who wouldn't be attracted to him. As our Annie says humm.....

I think she would have taken just about any of those guys  I don't think she was too heart broken about Barney engagement, just the lost opportunity.

Birdie

This is my impression of Rachel, too.  Rev. Trask seems obsessed with her.  Do you think she gave this impression to Rev. Trask and he is trying to change her attitude from "anyone but you"?  She is not a flirt  but very needy.  Of course, Barnabas would fall for this.  Quentin would not fall for this type of women but I could see him use her.  Quentin would be unavailable in her hour of need without the slightest regret.  However, Barnabas has been unavailable, too.

Once in awhile, I have the same problem.  I am able to open most threads but some just refuse to open.  When it happens to me, I come back later and they open fine.

Taken for granted

I can really relate to this!  At my husband's class reunion, I got stuck at the "forgotten spouse " table.  After the reunion, my husband said "Why didn't you tell me you wanted to dance?"  This is the same reunion that Fred Sneider(sp) of the B52's was there.  My husband didn't even introduce me.  After 21 years of marriage, he is just as lovable but still clueless after all these years.

I'd have to rewatch that episode to get the exact wording, but I believe Chris said he was going to be an architect, not necessarily that he actually was one at 21.

Hi MB,
Its nice when you and Midnite post once in a great while especially when its not about something technical.  Chris said he just graduated from college a few days after his twenty-first birthday.  I don't know how anyone can graduate from a 5 year program and be 21 no matter what the major is.

The board is still not working for me.  I get "504 gateway timeout" whether I attempt to logout or open a message.  I was lucky to get here.  I hope this posts.

I don't know if this will post.  It is 8:48 Eastern Time.  I can't get much to open.  I get a "gateway timeout" message.  Pages take several minutes to open.  I will try again later.

I always wished Barnabas would have married Lady Kitty.  I think he saw Josette but reality would have hit home the first few times he heard "Not tonight, I have a headache".

I love that dress and what a well co-ordinated couple you make.

Thank you, Luciaphil.  This was such an unexpected pleasure to have one of your columns to enjoy while yet another Sci-Fi marathon is on.

Oh yes, I have the day off but I would rather be in "dark shadows" than to "boldly go where no man has gone before".  However, I think both shows have plenty of ham and cheese to go around.

WOW, Luciaphil, you are on a roll.
    Rachel the flake
    Evan the incompetant
    Edward the prick
    Edith the old bag
I am so loving this!
