I saw the 91 series but seeing those stills made me think I had not been paying attention.  The stills do make it look like a soft porn flick.
I recall my favorite scene was when Angelique appears in the fire.  Willie cowers at Barnabas feet in terror like a small child wanting his parent to protect him.  Barnabas looks at the fire and Angelique's apparition with total disgust(no fear at all just extreme annoyance.)  The Angelique in the 91 series was over the top. A real hoot.
Thanks for the screen captures and a walk down memory lane.

And while I never saw "pork pie" on a menu in France, I saw it EVERYWHERE in England......how did this get to be a French Canadian specialty?

Many years ago, my husband and I drove over to Old Orchard Beach.  A sign outside a restaurant said we welcome Canadians and to ask about the pork of the day.  Must be some kind of regional thing.  I would ask some of my friends of French Canadian ancestry but there seems to be a little sensitivity.  There was a lot of discrimination and names like "chinook" and "frog" were common epithets.  I believe that Josette would have faced discrimination because she was Catholic and French.  I could just see Aunt Abigail spitting out the word papist and idolater.  Of coarse,  DC would have found that too hot to handle in the late 60s but it sure would have added another layer to Josette's misery.  She would have had no friends in the village, no priest, and be belittled by her husband's family for her beliefs not to mention her future children being raised as strict Calvinists.(no music, no dancing, no card playing but I guess sex was okay or no more Collins heirs.)

PS.  Raineypark,
Let me know how MB's Salmon pie recipe turns out.  If its good you can pass it on to me.  I probably will end up eating it alone since no one else in my family likes fish of any kind.

A whoopie pie is two small chocolate cakes about the size of a large cookie with fluffy white icing in between(think devil dog).  I have also seen it with pumpkin cakes.  Roger would not be caught dead eating one but David would have indulged in this treat often.  Willie, too.  This is probably the only thing Mrs. Johnson would get right.
As for Salmon pies and  Pork pies, I have never tried one but they are available in our local bakeries.  I live in a part of Maine that has strong French Canadian roots.  The chinese pie and American chop suey are served often at my sons elementary school and at church suppers.

I think the Collins family is used to bad cuisine.  There is a scene in 1795 where Natalie Dupres complains about the cooking(the cook would not use wine when cooking the fish  because it was against her religion).
Some of the dishes Mrs. Johnson would have been familiar with are"Chinese Pie" a dish made with elbow macaroni, canned tomatoes, and corn and who knows what, Salmon Pie and Pork Pie which I am informed by the locals are French Canadian dishes, American chop suey(similar to Chinese pie) and whoppie pies.  I hope I have not spoiled anyones appetite but I can see why Roger would go to Boston and bring home recipes for Mrs. Johnson to try.

I enjoyed the 91 series.  I was disappointed that it was not given a chance to find itself.  It was like an alternate reality.  I was surprised by the Ben Cross casting.  There has always been a debate as to how old Barnabas was supposed to be.  I know some believe he was in his twenties.  As portrayed by 40 plus Jonathan Frid, this seems unbelievable.  However,  Ben Cross was also obviously older than 20 something.  Do you think that DC will actually cast a 20 something actor in the role?  Of coarse,  everyone else will have to be younger, too.  Forget the Tony Petersen line about Barnabas being an old man.

PS.  I agree with MB perhaps we need a new thread about casting the new DS.

, the most unbelievable thing of all.....a Mistress of the Mansion who hasn't gone out shopping for 20 years!!!  ::)

When you are as rich as Elizabeth your dressmaker comes to you.  Unfortunately, the dressmaker was Oscar de la Orhbachs. ::)

I live in Maine and the night of the eclipse was very cold and clear.  When the moon was fully covered it was a soft glowing orange. I was nagging my husband to get out his telescope but he didn't.  I am sorry you missed it, Vlad.  I thought it was beautiful.

I thought in the early episodes, Elizabeth treated Victoria like an employee.  Elizabeth on more than one occasion threatened to have Victoria discharged.  She doted on Carolyn while using Victoria as a governess to her homicidal nephew.  I have always liked the character of Elizabeth who always tried to be honorable.  By making Elizabeth Victoria's mother,  she becomes a much less admirable person.  She dumps a baby off in an orphanage(paying a minuscule stipend) then hires her on as an employee all the while lavishing time and attention on Carolyn(maybe they should have hired Joan Crawford to play mommie dearest instead). ;)

In the early years I thought I'd died and gone to "Old Horror Movies Heaven".  Now,I can't remember the last time a classic horror film like the original "The Mummy" showed up there....even during the month of October.  [6042]

Before our local cable company put Sci-fi in its line-up, I filled out surveys and wrote letters asking for the Sci-fi channel.  I erroneously thought Sci-fi would show old science fiction and horror movies of the 50's.   While I have enjoyed having Dark Shadows, the channel has been a disappointment.
I do not currently get Soapnet but discovered it is available through an upgrade in service.  If Soapnet becomes the next outlet to carry Dark Shadow,  I would be grateful if those who get Soapnet would keep us all informed. :-*

I loved the chemistry of Frid and Parker in the 1795 storyline.  My two favorite scenes occur when the Angelique and Barnabas are alone(once in his room and the next in her room).  I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen 1795 yet but the scene in her bedroom makes you wish they had shown some flash backs of Martinique.

Current Talk '03 II / Re:Favorite Barnabas
« on: October 08, 2003, 06:40:37 PM »
This was such a hard question to answer.  I agree so much with Cassandra Blair but had to go with the tragic newly cursed Barnabas.  He gave insight into why Barnabas should be pitied rather than condemned outright.  He transforms from a decent man who cared about Ben and Vicki Winters to the quick descent  into the selfish, evil vampire.  Of course, this lets the show continue as we watch Barnabas' character slowly become rehabilitated.
