Mary O’Leary and Jonathan headed the Clunes Associates Production Company, which he founded in 1986. For more than a decade, he traveled across the U.S. and northeastern Canada, presenting his original one-man “Reader’s Theatre” shows. Performing at universities, colleges, theaters, libraries, auditoriums, schools, and other venues, he gave dramatic and comedic readings of classic and contemporary literature pieces. The wide range of selections came from the Bible, Shakespeare, Stephen King, Edgar Allen Poe, Groucho Marx, and others. Jonathan included his own commentaries, observations, and experiences as well. Proceeds from his shows benefited numerous charities.
His various programs thoughtfully explored many themes, ideas, history, philosophy, horror, and more. He used no props or effects, only a notebook with the written words, set upon a music stand in front of him. The readings came alive solely through his voice, gestures, facial expressions, tone, and interpretations of characters, settings, and moods. The programs showcased his many talents as an actor, storyteller, and director.
On March 31, Mary O’Leary had a phone interview with journalist Jeff Mahoney of the Hamilton Spectator, Jonathan’s hometown newspaper. The article should be in the newspaper within a few days. It is hoped the article will encourage people worldwide to vote often for Jonathan.
Because the actual publication date for the article is not announced, DS fans can check the Hamilton Spectator website daily:
http://www.thespec.com/hamilton/ **** A DS CONNECTION NOTE: One of the other 2014 Legend Award nominees is actor Lorne Green, best-known as “Ben Cartwright” in the classic 1960s Western TV series “Bonanza.” He also worked with Jonathan at the Toronto Shakespeare Festival in the 1950s.
SG encourages DS fans everywhere to share this complete ShadowGram Update # 314 so many others will visit the Walk of Fame website and Facebook Fan Page frequently during April to nominate Jonathan. (Those addresses are earlier in this Update.)
Whether or not he ultimately is chosen to receive the posthumous award, the honor brings attention to Jonathan’s accomplishments and talents on TV, stage, and in Readers’ Theater presentations, including “Dark Shadows” and much more.
