Current Talk '08 I / Re: Lela Swift on Joan Bennett
« on: May 13, 2008, 12:53:18 AM »
Far from it- from all I've heard from over the years, Joan was a real trouper- being from a theatrical family she knew all too well that there were no small parts, only small actors.  I remember an anecdote about Joan getting out of a cab to order a hot dog for a fellow passenger from a nearby vendor.  She got back to the cab and confessed she'd never done that before.  The passenger was someone from DS- I can't remember if it was an actor or a crew/production member.

She did confess in later interviews that she loved being a movie star and its perks, but on DS she never put on airs- this lady did her part and everyone followed her example.  That's one reason why for the most part things went smoothly on the set of DS, unlike some other soaps of the period (the backstage feuds at Another World are legendary and books have been written about them!).

Looks like there's a new generation of DS viewers! Congratulations, Jenny, and I know that Isabel has her Grandpa Dave looking out for her!   [angel13] [crowdhappy] [occasion13]

But Mr. Davis' antics are the exception, not the rule.  Perhaps he should find out why John Karlen is so beloved by his costars and the fans and he isn't!

Hmmm...  it looks like he and William Shatner have a lot in common: they both pissed off their costars with their egos and hamminess, and it's all in print!  Just read the writings of Kathyrn Leigh Scott, Marie Wallace, and the biographies of Joan Bennett and Grayson Hall.  And the memoirs of Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, and Walter Koenig!

Oh wow: first the Pope comes to America and now this!  Welcome aboard!! [blob6] [crowdhappy]

And my birthday's on the 10th!  What a nice early birthday gift- I may not be able to go to LA, but at least I can see Kathryn this year.  Hopefully, some more guests (especially from DS) will be added.

Who is Sacha Howells?

[blob6]I'm back from the hospital!  The surgery was a success, though right now I'm moving slow with a metal cane and have roughly six inches of surgical staples in my back.  Thank you all for your thoughts and wishes.  For the next few weeks I'll be having physical therapy and will be watching a LOT of DVDs.  It's moments like this that makes one feel proud of being part of such a unique group- DS Lives! (and I'm not doing too badly either!) [thewave] [crowdhappy]

I'm sorry I couldn't get to all of you sooner, but all the preparations and testing had to be finalized. I'm having pieces of bone removed from my lover spinal column to relieve pressure on the nerves so I can walk normally again. I've had back problems for the past few years (mostly due to herniated discks in my lower back), but this January thing got really bad when something snapped while lifting weights in the middle of a workout.   The good news is that the operation itself (a laminectomy) is about 2-3 hours long and I'll be in the hospital for a few days, with an estimated 2-3 week recovery at home.  For the past three weeks I've been X-rayed, CAT-scanned and tested beyond belief in both Staten Island and Manhattan.  My immediate problem is 'lumbar spinal stenosis'- in short, I was born with a narrow lower spinal column which has gotten too narrow for the nerves inside, so when I reinjured my back January, not only were my three herniated discs affected, but now the nerves were now pinched, causing all kinds of pain and numbness to my lower back and thighs, leaving me to use a cane most of the time since then.

Once I'm in recovery or at home I'll let you know how I'm doing- Charles

Honestly, David, I'd prefer that the Sci-Fi Channel started showing DS again......

This reviewer does some terrible mispellings of names of actors and characters, yet he does know his DS history.  For us DS Forums regulars, you'll all be pleased to know that the review has special emphasis on THE PEN!!

"I killed Paul Stoddard- and that man was my accomplice!"

"Good evening, Barnabas Collins.  I've been waiting for you for a long time- a very long time."

Well, there's an inside joke to the name "Georgina Spelvin".  In the old days, when an actor had to play a dual role in a play, in the program the second role would be credited to "George Spelvin".  Considering that the future porn goddess was a longtime Broadway 'gypsy' in shows like The Pajama Game prior to her X-rated career, it would make sense she'd take advatage of the old custom in picking her new stage name.  Kinda like when Elizabeth Montgomery played Samantha Stephens on Bewitched while her lookalike cousin Serena was played by a "Pandora Spocks" (say it fast!).

Well, I'm looking forward to seeing this film again- David, any more films up your sleeve?
