Stokes was shocked to see that Dr. Julia Hoffman, who was born in the 20th century, had a counterpart in 1841 parallel time.  He decided that the only possible explanation was that...

...the Julia whom he knew was born at Collinwood in 1790 (or maybe 1780) and, as a toddler, found the Stairway Through Time, climbed up it, came out in 1920 (or maybe 1910) Collinwood, and ran out into the woods and was raised by the howling dogs of Collinsport.
