"...this version is most definitely a comedy, and a pretty damned funny one."

Vicki in a straightjacket is possibly a nod to Maggie's time at Windcliff...?

Jimbo is correct. Anyone associated with the film must have anything they've said taken with a huge grain of salt. It's in everyone of their contracts that they must take part in the "promotion" of the film. They're doing their jobs right now, and their job is to promote the movie, not to give us the straight dope on what kind of movie it is.

Had WB nailed down a marketing strategy, they'd all be parroting the same lines right now. The comments you're seeing from them are only as wishy washy as they are because with no marketing plan, the cast and crew are doing their best to hold up their end of the contract without any kind of marketing master plan.

Bella Heathcote and Jonny Lee Miller aren't box office draws. Releasing still of them wouldn't generate much buzz.

You can tell from Barnabas' face it's the ancestral home; and the sets have been over the top in every pic since that group photo (check out the ceilings in that one). And I recall a quote from a production designer saying that all teh interior design has some sort of seaside or maritime theme (seahorse chandeliers, etc.).

51
The Barnabas and Willie shot are the first shot since the Entertainment Weekly group photo that gives you a sense of the "world". And the color palette looking so different from the shot of the foyer/staircase - maybe there's an Old House after all?

Current Talk '24 I / Re: hoDS/NoDS DVD Release?
« on: March 01, 2012, 05:50:09 PM »
These will not be coming out until several months after the new film is released on Blu-ray and DVD, so sometime in 2013.

Only thing questionable there is that the new movie will definitely be out on blu and DVD before the end of the year. Big studio movies that came out in May and June of last year were on home video by September and October. Waiting til 2013 to release the new film on video is a big window.

Quote
Tim Burton:  "It's news to me... I always start things with the most serious of intentions. I sometimes find humour in things that aren't funny and vice versa."

So Mars Attacks, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice weren't intended as comedies, Tim? Got it. :))

It is obvious from the range of posts here and based on what we know so far that those looking for a dark, heavy, serious tone mixed with some comedic moments are going to be very disappointed; those wanting to see an over the top parody are going to love the movie.

What I'm looking for is something between the two extremes but, in terms of specifics, one which I'm not qualified to imagine. I pay 11 bucks (yep, 11) to see things I couldn't come up with on my own.

56
You're absolutely right. But, I guess I am expecting less attention to the traditional elements of costume and set if this is going to be a huge diversion.  A good chunk of the cast looks like they walked right out of the original series (with certain updates).

That they've done that, and are making a goofy love letter to the original show, without any kind of slavish fanboy loyalty, is kind of what excites me.

57
What I was saying is that I find it hard to believe that Burton and Co. would go to such lengths to recreate the look of the original and then not recreate the feel.  It's possible.  We'll see.

Didn't mean any offense, but whatever Burton & Depp's intention, the production/costumer designers and art directors aren't going to half-ass it based on the creative tone. They're spending millions of dollars on the film, and the design team is going to bring their A game, no matter what "legacy" is being pillaged for laughs...

58
Yeah, they don't allocate budgets to how serious a movie is.

To clarify the earlier comment, I guess I mean that hardcore fans will be the only ones to really fully "get" a comedic riff on the show, and the sad part is that so few seem open to that experience.

59
I'm assuming everything we've read is true. They're making a completely goofy/out there homage to the show. Not sure why that's such cause for alarm. We'll always have the show (that whole "only soap to be released in its entirety on home video" miracle is never lost on me), and nothing is ever going to replace the show, so why not go for broke and give us something completely unexpected?  To be honest, when DCP/Pierson were in creative control of these relaunches, the results weren't so hot.

Just as an example: I'll never understand the slavish narrative loyalty that insisted BOTH the 91 and 04 versions HAD to start with Vicki on a train. Just because the original did? That's the opposite of creativity. Fan fiction is so often terrible because of that kind of fealty to the source. I'm excited for them to turn the property on its ear; the original series is safe on my shelf!

The sad thing is that hardcore fans are likely the only ones to get a kick out of this version. New folks will be left out of the joke, is my guess.

Does anyone have the source where she claims to have read the whole script? That's rather unusual that a supporting player or dayplayer would be given access to the whole thing. I wonder if Jim Pierson passed one to her. I wonder if she read the shooting script or the discarded draft by John August.
