Current Talk '06 II / Re: Bloopers DVD
« on: September 04, 2006, 07:40:50 AM »
For example, the Parallel Time ending credits with the crew guy eating his sandwich was NOT added for example.

Is that on the VHS? I grabbed what looked like the last bloopers disc off the MPI table on Saturday, was so psyched to watch it with the wife. We cracked up. Can't wait to watch more eps and see these clips in context. We just hit the end of Collection 4, and the beginning of the 1795 story, and it's a blast so far.

He also mentioned "Boozin' for Wolves," his response to "Boozin' for Sheep," and do I have a clue what Chris has been talking about?  I really don't.

I think he said "Buddhism for Wolves".  Other than that, kudos on a fantastic memory!

They let us buy the bloopers DVD 3 months early at the fest, so thumbs up there.

And as far as the "must join the club to get the DVDs" rule, you must look at the wording on the flyer:

"Currently, only members of the DVD Club will have the opportunity to purchase all 6 DVD Collections of Dark Shadows: The Beginning series before they're made available to the general public."

Sounds like they'll be available to anyone, just not as soon as they're available to club members. Since I'm only on Collection 5, I've got plenty of time to wait and see what happens...

I was let down by the panels. Two whole questions that everyone has heard before. They get all these folks in a room, and no one can ask anything new or interesting. Some kid asked the cameraman if he ever wanted to work with George Romero...

Selby reading from his book was actually pretty entertaining. He read a number of passages about his dad, who died last week. It was all I could think about when I watched them all together (he's on the left- sorry for the crappy pic).

Jim Pierson seemed about two seconds from going postal on people any time he was onstage. I felt for him, with the hotel staff noisily setting up one side of the stage while panels were happening on the other side of the stage.

The WB pilot was interesting. They were sure trying to cram a lot of story into that first pilot. I'd have watched the show, but there was no charm of the original to be found.

I enjoyed watching the auction as well. The damn Barnabas figure I sold on Ebay for $70 went for over $100 at the auction! On the other hand, the ring I found on Ebay for $30 went for $70. Crazy.

They showed it today. They will also show it tomorrow. It's a shame they felt they had to cut it down as much as they did, including chopping his farewell, but at least we had the fun surprise of his live phone call during the otherwise mundane cast reunion.

I went today, and it was an interesting spectacle. Got the bloopers DVD 3 months early (!), and picked up a couple books from KLS's table. She seemed really nice.

The recreated drawing room was fun (took some pics, not sure how they turned out yet).  The coolest dealer moment had to be when I asked this one photo seller where all the candids taken outside ABC's studio came from, only to find out he had taken them himself, 37 years ago. Nifty.

Current Talk '06 II / Re: Kinescopes
« on: August 02, 2006, 07:31:51 AM »
The kinescopes definitely have an ethereal, "not-film-not-video" look, but as a fan of both the original B&W eps and the acid-trip color palettes of the later ones, the kinescopes are a distant third. Why, you ask?

- the actual B&W eps were using different lenses on different cameras. They had a sharpness that the color eps don't, and the kinescoped color eps are kind of mush in comparison;

- I have to admit that the kinescope eps, because of their low contrast and frequently muffled audio tracks, put me right the hell to sleep. It's like the opposite of audiovisual stimuli.

I'm grateful they exist, glad we have the whole show (aside form that one "lost" one), but I don't get excited about the idea of back to back kinescope eps (which is what did me in tonight, eps 351 & 352.)

Current Talk '04 II / Re: Jonathan Frid Flubbing His Lines
« on: July 27, 2006, 03:14:14 AM »
Actually, that's not true.  I heard an interview, I *believe* it was on The Ron Berry Show that Frid did solo, where he was saying he couldn't understand why a certain actress, now, mind you, he didn't NAME KLS-but you knew damn well it was her he was referring to if you watched the show, had trouble getting into a coffin for a scene on the show.  He was basically like, "Hey, it's called ACTING, just get in the coffin!" or something to that affect.  He didn't say this in a overly mean way, actually it was rather matter-of-fact, but the point was driven home, at least for me.  ;)

Perhaps he told it more than once, but he tells this story on his Merv Griffin appearance that's on the reunion DVD.

Jonathan Frid's Freudian slip during a particularly troublesome scene of dialogue:

"As long as Willie is alive, my entire career is in danger!"

And I know Frid gets a lot of flack for flubbed lines, but Grayson Hall is matching him pretty well, if we're keeping score.

Kind of a dork for this stuff. I think in all likelihood if they do another series, which I sadly doubt, we'll see another Barnabas figure, perhaps with a longer hair headsculpt and one of the 1800s costumes. He's "the name"; even the Quentin figure didn't sell nearly as well as the Barnabas figures.

These companies have trouble keeping figure lines floating well enough to do supporting characters. Sideshow took a beating on a Planet of the Apes line that had a lot of supporting characters as figures.  Would love to see new figures, just skeptical that I will.

Current Talk '06 II / Looking for anecdotes
« on: July 19, 2006, 06:37:29 AM »
Sorry, I said there'd be stupid newbie questions...

Can you guys point me toward the best source of anecdotes from teh set of the show? I have, on order, Dark Shadows Companion and Dark Shadows Almanac. I am wondering where is in print I can get some decent behind the scenes stories. What did that tiny, hot studio, full of people in wool costumes and fake fog, smell like? That sorta thing.
