And now the downside - I just got collection 10 in the mail. As usual, a couple of the discs were rattling around inside the box. I think they might be scratched, but I'm still on collection 6, so it'll be a while before I get to those discs, and I don't want to hump ahead. I wonder if MPI will replace just the scratched ones...?

I'm a movie nut, and I really enjoy a good, packed to the gills DVD. If there is a decent "making of" feature, and a commentary track by the filmmakers, I can spend 3 or 4 days with a movie I love. It's a more engaging experience than a regular ol' VHS.  And in the case of some films, the film transfer is surprisingly updated.

No offense meant, I was replying to the whole thread.   ;)

Upgrading to DVD is valid for reasons of picture quality and (in the case of most films) getting the film in its proper aspect ratio. I try to buy my DVDs used, and to not double dip unless there is some interesting and valid extra content (e.g., The Criterion Collection remastering a film and pairing it with LOTS of supplemental material). When that happens, I donate the old disc to a local college's film department.

As for all the HD stuff, I'll wait til they settle on a format. And til I have an HD monitor to watch the stuff on. (A friend has one, and the difference is kind of astonishing.)

It takes all kinds. I can't really sit in judgement of someone else's purchases when I'm looking at over 1000 episodes of a 40 year old soap opera on my shelf... :P

I never mentioned the movies, just the TV show.

Of course, the movies could be shown in HD. They'd look glorious.

Oh! I assumed were talking movies; I didn't think Monsters HD showed anything but movies (I don't hvae the channel). Sorry!

I know. So why would that preclude the DS movies? It's a matter of remastering them, which I know you've had troubles with, but from a technical standpoint, it could be done.

Or were you saying there's no way MGM would spring for such a thing?

Are you sure about Monsters HD? I read an article about how they were remastering the 1987 film From Beyond to show on the channel. The SIGNAL they broadcast is in HD, but I don't think all their source material is. It'd be a good excuse to clean up those films, that's for sure.

Picture a wide shot with a person standing on one side of the screen. Then that person walks to the other side of the screen.  Now imagine someone cutting out the bit of tape where the person walks, and splicing the footage from either side of that shot back together.  What is left is a "jump cut"- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jump_cut- an edit where the camera does not move, but some action has been removed. Now the person simply "pops" from one side of the screen to the other. You see it in bad edits, but sometimes it is done for intentional effect, or for visual impact (like in a Godard film)  In this instance I mentioned earlier, it seems to be covering an error in filming, thoug I don't know what.

If you haven't seen it for awhile, check it out--it's worth the time!

Agreed. But good luck finding it in ep 229... ;)

429, maybe?

When Daniel, Trask and Naomi are looking at Abigal's body against a tree in ep 432 (DVD collection 6, last ep of disc 2), there are two weird, very glaring jump cuts in the same shot.  Is this a rare instance of an edit that happened during taping? To cover "dead" Abigal? Or was it made after the fact by MPI for some reason? Curious if anyone has some info.

Wow. I'm in the minority. I want to throttle the little brat every time he's on screen. My finger twitches above the FF button whenever he shows up.

The Dark Shadows Special Edition DVD is the closest thing you'll see. Clips and interviews. Fun stuff.

Related note: Does anyone here have the Dark Shadows Reunion DVD? If so, I'm wondering if you can confirm something. The Q&A starts, and someone stands up in the audience and asks about DVDs of the movies. I'd swear from the voice this is Jim Pierson. My suspicions deepen when Curtis, smirking, says, "Jim Pierson is the guy to ask about that, if you can find him." WTF?
