I imagine that the people who are OK with sex scenes are divided into two different types: those who think the sex is there to advance the plot, and those who think the plot is there to deliver the sex.  And unfortunately I figure that it's very easy for the latter to stifle the former.

As for Barnabas and Angelique, I think a lot is gained by the fact that we didn't see the sex between them.  She says they made a pledge (or something of the sort); he says they didn't.  I'm glad I don't know the exact truth of the matter, even though I do have a very strong opinion about it.

Totally agree with the comment above.

I understand where Zahir is coming from, but the movies that Zahir listed are absolutely appropriate for sex scenes, because that is what the plot is centered around. It is artistically appropriate because that is the mood for that particular movie.  Like Midnight Cowboy for one, is about a hustler, so it's only appropriate in that sense.

Also, This sounds contradictory of me, but I would like to update the statement I made about violence because I wrote that post quickly and I didn't really explain my feelings on the subject... I agree with Zahir that sugar-coating violence isn't a good thing for a show that wants to leave you with the reality of a situation.
Some violence has a strong impact on the over-all feel of the show and I definitely wouldn't object to it.

I was actually referring to "gore" NOT violence and I didn't make that clear.  I apologize for that.

Reason being is that, so many times, I see a show that tries to go all out with the dead bodies with the blood splurting out or the synthetics, and it just makes it feel a little corny to me. Especially in a horror film.  And vampire shows especially--they try to put the blood all over the place.  It's just silly and not at all realistic.  In artistic form again, setting the mood... What person do you know would stop and study every portion of a corpse?  It seems foolish in film sense to show the viewer every aspect of the dead person's mangled body, unless the movie centered around a police force where they are looking at the body objectively, well, that is what they do and again, it's appropriate.

For Dark Shadows I would rather see a different take on the show and make it more dramatic than about a vampire eating people, or them throwing in a couple sex scenes to wake you up.  I think many shows rely on sex scenes to up the entertainment value, and when it is done in a way that doesn't supplement the plot line or really have much to do with the show, it's a waste of screen time.  Most shows like that have very little quality which is why they have to throw that content in there, because, sex sells.

Well, I mean, they kind of just make the show seem tacky.  I think less is more.  It brings a more powerful feeling to the screen if less sex and less violence is shown.  Look at the Hitchcock film "Psycho"- never once is any violence shown, but it has such a psychological feeling to it.  It just isn't necessary.  Your mind fills in the blanks, and it's always better that way.  Plus, it saves more time for more important things like character development, and storyline.  I mean, personally I hate sitting through a two minute love scene.  It's so awkward and it loses track of the feel of the film for me.

I hate sex scenes.  They are awkward and an unnecessary waste of time.  I mean, you don't need to see everything to get the picture- you get the point if it's leading to that.  I don't think they need to show every single moment.

Another thing they do that irks me is, like nightshadow said, they contradict themselves all the time. In a movie preview issue they'll print how great upcoming releases are, and then review them and trash them like they knew all along they weren't great 3 or 4 months later.

The writers and editors there desperately want to be hipsters and it shows.

Exactly!  I'm glad I'm not the only one who notices this!  And the stuff they promote sometimes...oh man, I wouldn't spend two cents to see.  They are a magazine that is trying to sell to a general audience- they're more about prophet than actually reporting the goods.

However, you know, there's a good and bad to every story.  I do like some of their articles they print-- but some of those reviewers just need to go.  I don't think they are qualified.

I've just about given up on EW. They were the ones reporting that Lost was going to get canceled and all this bullcrap a couple of years ago. Then the finale of the show came out and EW changed their tune as if they had never written articles about Lost and some other shows being over rated. Meanwhile promoting this lousy show that's probably going to get canned.  Ptsh.

Yes!  It's such a silly play!
It was even made more funny by the fact that Ryan (playing Willie) forgot his line, because John Karlen had announced that he knew all his lines to the crowd that very same day!

Games / Re: The DS Characters: The movies they probably wouldn't enjoy!

Barnabas Collins -  Van Helsing (Obvious reasons)

Julia Hoffman - Misery (The characters seem a little too similar if you ask me.)

Willie Loomis - Jeepers Creepers  (The creeper preys on victims, taking their body parts.) or Dracula (since Renfield kinda tumbles down the stairs and...well...no one cared.)

Post-Wyndcliff Loomis - The Jacket (Mental Hospital torturing patients)

Carolyn Stoddard - Mystic River  (Party girl gets murdered)

Victoria Winters - When a Stranger Calls  (WHO was that who called asking her to check for Maggie in the graveyard?)

Adam - The Bride of Frankenstein  (The girl doesn't like Frankie)

Well, that's the best I can do off the top of my head. lol!

I love these.  Were they filmed a while ago?  I wonder if there is any chance of them making more.  They are so great.  Perfectly done.

I watched the Vampire Diaries.  It wasn't too bad.

I was reminded of a mixture between Twilight, Dark Shadows and Angel.  Since the series Vampire Diaries came out before the Twilight books, I would have to say that Twilight must have ripped off it really badly because those two were very similar in premise and setting- though Vampire Diaries had more going on.  Seems that the young girl looks oddly like the vampire's old love (Josette anyone?) lol.  I find it kind of annoying that they always do that same vampy shot of a vampire leaping off a roof, and they never give it the correct physics- they always fall too slowly like they've obviously got wires on.  I don't know.  If the new Dark Shadows movie does that I'm going to cover my eyes.   That's like the trend, and they always make it look so stupid.  ugh!  Sorry! Rant over.

All-in-all, I thought it was a nice looking show.  The script was ok.  The story was pretty interesting.  The cast are all very pretty looking- the whole cast looks like it stepped out of a fashion magazine.  Atypical of a station that has Gossip Girl and America's next top model running on it.  But at least they are good actors too- I also tuned into a new show called "Glee" (basically like Highschool musical in a tv series), and I thought the actors looked far too old to be playing Highschool kids in that, and the characters were all so stereotypical and over-the-top (which might be for humor value, but I found it a little obnoxious).  At least the characters in Vampire diaries seem to have a little depth to them.

I'm used to the actor Ian Somerhalder typically playing wimpy and/or prissy CA. Boys, it was interesting to see him as the bad vampire.

I'll definitely watch the next episode.

It wasn't a volunteer - just a fan who was outside the same time we were.  We would not have wanted to sit down in the halls anyway. ;)

Oh, well it was still a silly thing to say.  I guess people aren't used to others actually being courteous.

Niki had a plaque made for John regarding his service in the Korean War. The plaque is sitting in Aiken SC and John is very proud of it. I still hear from John from time to time. Niki adored him, as he did her. The last time we saw JK, we went for a walk with him through Brooklyn. My angel is passed now. I take great pride that John knew that Niki was his greatest fan.

Aw, That's such a sweet story about Niki.  That sounds like fun, he's always got something interesting to say.  I'm really not sure why he likes us so much, he says we're "different"- "I've never met anyone like you guys." ha!
Johnnie is always eating other people's food, he drank someone's iced-tea from the festival table saying, "I don't care if someone spit in this, I'm thirsty."  Last year he made me laugh because he kept presenting me and my sister with chocolates from the room that were left on the pillow... then he said, "Here, take this.  There's too many in here." he gave me all these shampoo bottles that were on the counter.  The day after that, he exclaimed, "The maid came in and replaced all of them! It's like they were never gone!"

I remember the fest in Tarrytown where JF made his return to the DS world and I was helping him out of his car and pulled his legs (which were cramped up from the long drive) out of the car too, helping him gain purchase on the ground.  A fan said to me after I saw that the Fridster got in "Do you chew his food for him too?"

I don't understand that.  I also can't understand why the volunteer didn't go and get a chair for you two to sit down from out in the halls.  That's what I would have done.  I guess common sense is something rare nowadays.  Doesn't sound like much of a volunteer to me.
