Current Talk '03 II / Re:D.S. PRE-EMPTED?
« on: September 28, 2003, 01:57:05 AM »
Could someone either point me to the discussion thread or possibly recap what's up with SciFi?

Sure, Vlad--

On this board, "September/October Sci Fi Guide" was just kicked from page 4 to page 1.  Pre-empted days are also listed on the October Calendar (click calendar in the horizontal menu, then select October in either place at the bottom of the September page).  It came up on the Current Talk board as well: In "How bizarre!-- SciFi repeats an episode" (currently on p. 3, see reply #7) and "Strange Predicament" (now on p. 1).

How is he?

My apologies to MPI for veering off-topic.  Ashenrider sounded great and is at the same church in NC, and his family is also doing well.  Maybe he can be encouraged to join us when the forums are reopened? ;)

I also heard from Henry/casper_collins this week before he headed off on an 11-day trip to China.  How fun!

Current Talk '03 II / Re:Error in DVD 7 Episode ???

Hi Raholt.

While hanging out at Bette's today, she mentioned that her watching of the DVDs caught up to that scene this morning and thought it seemed odd to her as well.  So she offered to show it to me, and since getting me to watch DS with a good friend requires MUCH arm twisting ;), we watched the DVD version of that scene followed by the same one on VHS.  And our verdict is that you are exactly right...

To repeat what you said, on the DVD we see Vicki leave Liz behind in the drawing room, and immediately after that she's at the door facing the camera and lets out a scream.  In the video, we see her leave Liz, then there's a brief black screen followed by Vicki approaching the front door, we see her open it (with the camera still behind her) and can see Harry standing there, and then it cuts to the part on the DVD that has Vicki facing the camera and screaming.  So apparently, in editing out the period in which the screen is black, the editor removed some of the action as well.  Good catch!

OT - BTW, since you're one of the original posters from the old SciFi BBs, I thought I'd let you know that I received an email today from another SF poster that I don't think any of us had heard from in ages.  Do you remember Ashenrider/PadreJim? :D

Didn't they say something in Gerard's 1st episode about a "wife"?  He was going to spend some time or something with her?
I've been watching 1840 pretty closely, but if they mentioned a wife of Gerard, I missed the reference.

The following is from RobinV's summary of #1111 (the [corporeal] Gerard's 1st ep):

Quote
Gerard continues to massage away Flora's headache.  When you open your eyes, your pain will be gone, he says, and removes his hands and tells her to open them.  Now! she says, now my day will start!  She rises from the sofa and asks Gerard what she ever did without him--she must go see his wife--and your wife, too, of course, Gabriel--come back to Rose Cottage with me after dinner? Asks Flora, handing Gerard the book.  My honor, he says.  Flora leaves.

One of the risks writers taken in doing a flashback that goes back in time farther than the one before and in this case falls between 2 flashbacks is that they will foul up on details, which they surely did in more than one way with this one.  The storyline is interesting but much is lacking in the way the detalis are handled or just ignored.  I know that in the original run, what is on now was being done well after 1897 and thus most people had forgotten  what they saw there and that only in reruns does it show to be a glaring error in continuitiy.

DS had one major fault and that was lack of keeping track with itself.  Dates seemed to be a primary source of this problem.  Often they  changed for no reason

My biggest continuity gripe in this storyline-- the rewriting of Angelique's history.  Wandering the globe since 1795 while making annual pilgrimages to Collinwood?  Yet possessing knowledge of the current Collinses?  Don't.  Think.  So.  According to the story already laid out for us, girlfriend should have been in hell after Ben torched her.

(I'll save Miranda DuVal for another time, another thread. ;))

That is true that no mention of a ship is made except that Gerard had served with Quentin on board a ship, but the name of the ship is not mentioned that I recall.

It was-- the China Sea.

I think the one thing that doesn't happen with 1840 that did happen with the plot leading up to 1897 is there is no reason given for why the ghosts suddenly appeared at Collinwood in 1970.  In the Quentin storyline, it is Chris and his curse that bring Quentin restless spriit back.  It is also his need for forgiveness from Jamison who he sees in David that is a driving force for his ghost.  Also his hatred for his family and their descendents makes him want in death what he could not have in life, which was Collinwood.

In 1840 we have nothing to explain why the ghost show up when they do.  There is no event to explain why they came back when they did and why they had not come back before.  Had a grave been disturb or a room found, something to show how and why the restless spirits of Gerard, Daphne and the children came back it would have worked to better tie 1840 to 1970.

My interpretation is that the emergence of Quentin's and Beth's ghosts was triggered by the appearance of Amy rather than her brother Chris.  And so from there I inferred that it was Hallie's presence in the house that roused the ghosts of Gerard and Daphne.

Maybe that happened with the 1840 plot.  It was laid out on paper, but the red pen quickly altered it without any thought to consistency and things already made clear in 1970 (such as Tad and Carrie dying at almost the exact time Quentin I did back in 1840; what was the importance of the Java Queen in all this; etc.).

I recall David (while possessed by Tad) mentioning a Gabriel who accompanied his doctor in from town on horseback.  Obviously the writers kept the name but blew the only detail we learned about him in 1970. ::)

Didn't the set up for 1795 also include a mention of pirates?  Something about Naomi's jewels?

You're welcome, Patti. :)

Midnite...you said you had it briefly...can I ask what you have/what you do now to prevent pop-ups?

I don't have a popup blocker.  I just don't feel I need it.  Only reason I had that one is because a close friend was about to pay for one and I wanted to save her the cost.

But do get thee a firewall if ye don't have one.  :D

tried to use our 'get more smilies' and the anti-pop-up hand (with line through it) appeared & I can't access add'l smilies.

Assuming that you got Pop Up Stopper, I had it very briefly-- you can read up on it to make sure, but when you follow a new link and want the stopper disabled press Ctrl first and hold it, or there's an on/off in the tool bar you can click to turn it off completely (and you turn it back on the same way).  Hope that helped.
